My hair, I used to joke was my "crowning glory" - it was the one thing about myself I always loved. I was blessed to have long, thick hair that had a really nice wave to it. I didn't realize how lucky I was until I got THE worst haircut in my entire life.

I have a pretty simple hair style, long layers with long, side-swept bangs. I tried a new salon out, very trendy near my house. When my layers grow out, because of the thickness of my have it gets big, like "Jersey" big hair, and looks weighed down, lol...

I asked her to cut my hair and get my layers back and trim my bangs, which were past my eyes, too long for me.

She kept repeating over and over how thick my hair was and if I wanted it thinned out with a razor. I said ok, never had that done before but sometimes my hair is so big I thought it might be a good idea.

Holy smokes. What a huge mistake. My hair is now so thinned out, its wispy, won't hold hot rollers, and now has lost it's wave. And my poor bangs. I'm not kidding, she thinned them out so much, they are just wisps of hair left.

Has anyone ever had this issue? Are my options to get extenstions or just grow it out? Wondering if I take a few inches off it might look fuller? It's past my bra stap but now just long, thin, and stringy. It's very noticable. Friends and family keep asking what happened. :confused3

Any advice appreciated. I know it's just hair but I'm upset. :guilty:

I am so sorry this happened. I really don't have advice. I have thin hair, was thick as a child but now not so lucky. Do you have someone that normally does your hair that you trust? If you do I would say go back to that person and see what they say. I am thinking that you may have to get some of it cut off and then let it grow again, but don't listen to me when it comes to hair, I am not talented in that area. Good luck, I am sure it will get back to the great hair you once had.

I feel your pain. I have long, thick hair with a bit of wave. Hairdressers are always telling me I need to thin it out. I fell for it once, and only once. Never let them take a razor to your hair! All you can do is let it grow out.

Thank you both.

I do have a hairdresser I used for 7 years before moving. She's over an hour away but I did email her to ask what I should do.

I know growing it out is probably my only option but waiting to hear from her if I should chop a few inches so that it's shorter but not as noticable what that darn razor did. NO MORE RAZORS!!

Yes - same exact thing happened to me I'll never have a razor used on my hair again. Yes - have it shortened a bit - maybe to your shoulders - it will make a big difference and won't look as stringy as it does now. That's just what I did (as well as switch hairstylists in my salon) and it really did help.

Missed your post! Thanks for the input. I'm thinking that is the way to go.

Ugh! I had an awful experience with a razor cut too! I hated it. My experience was years ago so my hair has recovered, but it was awful. Then a few years later, my dh took our youngest son to have his hair cut. He has beautiful, thick, wavy, pale blond hair. My dh had forgotten about my awful experience with the razor because the lady cutting his hair talked my dh into letting her cut our son's hair with a razor! :scared1::scared1: Again, it was awful. I am so sorry you are experiencing a bad haircut.....I think we can all sympathize. May your hair grow out quickly.

If your hair has any wave or curl to it, NEVER let a stylist go near it with a razor. It destroys wavy/curly hair.

Oh my goodness! Has anyone had a good experieince with a razor haircut?

Now I'm beginning to think this woman butchered my hair on purpose!!

It's sad that hairstylists pressured you to "thin out" your hair. I'd give anything for full, thick hair!

What's interesting is how she kept saying how thick it was like it was a REALLY bad thing. Then she kept saying how thin hers was. Telling ya, now I think it was done on purpose.

That I don't get, I don't think thick hair is a bad thing at all. DH's hair (long, thick, beautiful hair with a perfect curl at the ends) is perfect, if I could cut it off transfer it to my head I would!

I'd call the salon manager. I'd have them fix it, but definitely a different stylist. You shouldn't have to pay to have it fixed!

I thought about calling but I'm nervous because I've never done that before. I've never been so unhappy with my hair. I am seriously considering taking a few inches off myself tonight1

I too have thick wavy hair with a tendency to get "big" The BEST haircut I EVER received was done with a razor (a spa in NYC - $$$) The WORST haircut I EVER received was done with a razor as well.

I learned not to let just anyone near my hair with a razor.

I would NOT take my own hands to my hair. I would go in and talk in person so she can see what it looks like. Also bring in a few photos to show the before.

I have extremely thick hair and have had razor cuts before that have been lovely.
I think you got someone who didn't quite know what to do with you...

No advice except find a different hairdresser.

Ditto. I have thick hair with a wave to it. (I hate the wave in my hair btw). Anyway, I have had many razor cuts that I LOVED. It's not the razor, it's the hairdresser. I think you got a dud. :(

My hair is fairly thick, and sometimes they want to "thin it out". I always say no.

To the OP: My sympathies.

Thanks for all the replies! :goodvibes

Here's what I learned:
NO MORE RAZOR HAIRCUTS!

I definitely got a dud for a hairstylist.

Spoke to my former hairdresser of 7 years. She said I will need to let it grow out. :guilty:

I'm still thinking about just cutting a few inches off to maybe get some fullness back....to be continued....

I'm so sorry about your hair! I am so envious of anyone who has naturally thick hair - shame on that hairdresser for destroying it - UGH! Now, my stylist uses a razor to layer my hair and it looks great; however, I wear extensions so that probably makes a difference.

I agree that taking a bit of length off will help it look fuller. Also, while you are waiting for it to grow back, you could try clip in extensions. I used to use them before I started wearing permanent extensions and they worked well to fill out my thin, fine hair. Good luck!
