How long before trying to get pregnant did you go off your birth control?

With DD #1 I went off the pill in December and got pregnant in January (first cycle!). This time around, I went off the pill in August and got pregnant the following September - over a year later!! I have no idea what the problem was this time around and doctors won't help with fertility issues until after you've been trying for a year (at least that's how my doctor was). What really helped me was the over the counter ovulation kit.

Good luck!!

Thanks. We're not thinking about trying until next spring, but I was just wondering about the experiences other women had with how long it took. I guess it just varies with each person.

A lot of it also depends on what birth control you're on. For example, you're more likely to get pregnant quicker if you get off the pill as opposed to getting off the depo shot.

I used to be on the depo shot, and I read you'd have to be off for somewhere around a year before getting pregnant. At least for most women. I went off the shot about a year and a half ago and I've been on Ortho TriCyclen since.

I used to be on Ortho TriCyclen. From what I remember, you should wait to go through one natural cycle before ttc. But that is mainly so that they can accurately predict a due date should you conceive right away.

I went off the pill at the end of July 05 so I could chart my cycle. We used alternate protection until the end of November 05, became pregnant in December 05. This time I had been on BCPs for about 4 and a 1/2 years (2 and a 1/2 on regular strength pills.)

To concieve my second I went off the pill in Jan 2000 became pregnant in March of 2000. I was on the mini pill at the time (had been for @ 9 months) since I was still nursing my oldest son.

I went off 6 months before trying and then it took 9 months to get pregnant the first time. After that you just had to say the word. :lmao:

I went off BCP in September 2002, used other methods till 1 day in June 2003 and conceived on that 1 time. So technically 9 months, though I'm thinking it would have been much sooner if we had actually started trying sooner. Oh, and the reason I went off them when I did was partially so that I could track my cycles for awhile because before BCP (I was on them for 3 years) they were only sorta regular. Once I stopped in 9/02 though they were pretty much every 28 days like clockwork.

I got pregnant 2 weeks after discontinuing the pill. (much to my surprise, and no...I was not trying) I now ignore the 'averages'.

I think you have to go into it with the thought that it would be fine if it happens right away (if not, use other methods for the interim) and also knowing that it may take a good deal of time. There is no way to know what will happen with you, unless you have access to a crystal ball, LOL.

Good luck to you!

The thing about the depo shot isn't written in stone either.

I had my last depo shot in Sept of 96, was due for another Dec of 96. I had already decided to go off depo as I hated how it made me feel...

Got pregnant with DD Jan 97, four months after the last shot, and only one month overdue for another. She was quite the surprise.

My friend's doctor told her to wait for 6 months after stopping the pill before trying to conceive. I don't know why, but I remember reading the same thing in several magazines, too.
