Lactose intolerance at Buffets?

I have been to Disney several times before and have always listed lactose intolerance on my ressie. I have even re-confirmed at check-in and with my server. The Chef has never come out to let me know what is safe, or to offer to make me dairy free pancakes or waffles (as I have read about here). Everyone just sends me off to the buffet like it is 100% safe. I usually just stick with fruit and hope the bagels with no butter/cream cheese are safe.

Should I list myself with a dairy allergy? Is that the only way to ensure I won't accidentally ingest dairy? It is not a life threatening allergy that I have, but I get horribly ill if I eat milk. Lactiad pills do nothing to help as I have colitis as well and any dairy just flares up the colitis which makes for lots of discomfort for days and days.

I feel funny saying I have a true dairy allergy but at this point I am tired of risking what I am eating.

Hi casjen I have the same exact issues- lactose intolerance and colitis and until I had my DD lactaid did not help (now it does most of the time but not enough that I 'm eating dairy at WDW - who needs to be sick on vacation!)
So I avoided all dairy on my last trip. I just emphasized I had a severe intolerance and could not eat any dairy when making ADRs - I get ill from trace amounts and by products- so that it included both on my ADRs and I mentioned it again at check-in - a lot of times the chef would then come out or the server would say they were coming and if not brought up with the server and would let them know "I cannot eat any food with dairy products..."
Hope this helps!

Have you tried Digestive Advantage Lactose Intollerance medication? It is great and I eat whatever I want. That Lactaid stuff did nothing for me. This you take once a day. Just an FYI.

Most people with lactose intolerance are able to ingest some milk products. Pancakes shouldn't really bother you. There would be little to no lactose in that. Most cheeses are also OK. (Cheddar has less lactose than American, for example.) My daughter is severely lactose intolerant. In fact, she couldn't even tolerate Pediasure (lactose free but milk based) but had no problems with pancakes, etc. We didn't even really mention that to servers as her peanut and latex allergies are a bigger deal.

If you do not want something then you have to clearly state "No dairy" so they know you want "no dairy". At the podium tell the greeter/host that you are "No Dairy". A chef should come out and help you with the buffet.

If you want something then you have to make sure that you are heard. I would have asked for a manager and explained the situation. Lactose intolerance is different from dairy allergies and probably treated differently from a dairy free diet. The squeaky mouse get the dairy free pancake, lol.

I hope your next trip is better.
