LA28 - 2028 Summer Olympics

SoFi Stadium and LA Memorial Coliseum are roughly 8 miles apart. I would love to rent a house in that area. It looks like Airbnb only rents 2 years in advance. I expect prices will spike for that period.

I'll be there as I live here. I have already signed up to be contacted when they need volunteers.

@HannaBelle I would be very careful about staying in the area around the Coliseum, SoFi, Intuit and the Forum. They are not the safest areas. You better believe that LA will clean up their public transportation for the Olympics. It will likely go back to grunge after, but while the Olympics are here, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are looking for a place to stay, I would look at Long Beach (south of Pacific Coast Hwy) as it is close to a Metro line. They will also be running shuttle buses from non metro transit stations (ex. Torrance). Torrance and the South Bay beach cities are safe. Do not stay in the Harbor Gateway area. Wilmington and Carson are iffy. Basically, look for things that are west of the 405 freeway.

The athletes will be living at UCLA. In 1984, there was a lot happening in Westwood. It was fun to hang out there and meet athletes from different countries. The media will be at USC.

I went to the Olympics in Atlanta. We arrived the day after the bombing. It was most definitely a lottery as we were only going to go if we got tickets to decent events. We stayed at a friend's house so didn't have to deal with a hotel. We did, however, have difficulty getting a rental car. We changed our flight to Birmingham, rented the car in Alabama, then drove to Atlanta.

A family member went to Paris. They tried for tickets early and were successful. There were several additional lottery rounds after that and you could transfer tickets to another person, so they had family and friends trying to buy tickets for them. It wasn't difficult to get Paris tickets.

It will be interesting how transportation will work. They're going to encourage fewer personal cars, which is really weird in LA.
It really isn't. They did it in 1984 and traffic was blissful. They did it with the most recent freeway fire. I imagine a lot of companies will encourage employees to work from home during the Olympics.
Yea I also heard about flag-football. When did that even become a sport?
Girls flag-football became a CIF sanctioned sport in California in 2023.

We are planning on moving out of So Cal - but not until after the Olympics. You can see Marine Stadium from our house. Rowing and flat water kayak will be there. Water Polo and Synchronized Swimming are supposed to be in the Arena you can see when they show the Long Beach Grand Prix - we can walk there (long walk but doable). Open water swim, the sailing events and I assume the swim portion of the Triathalon will be held off-shore inside the break water. Other events are also rumored to be in Long Beach but not confirmed yet. All 3 of my kids play Lacrosse and are psyched to see that in the Olympics. We think that will be in Carson where the Galaxy play.

Both my college aged kids already called us to put dibs on their rooms. My response, "YOUR rooms?" Neither came home this summer and DD is a stretch to get her home for Christmas. Seems like I have a little more room for, "negotiation" now, doesn't it? DW's HS friends have also RSVP'ed. We expect we will have a very full house and will even have people sleeping in our yard in tents.

I'd be interested, but obviously finding a place to stay will be crazy.

Current plan I've seen is that the carpool lanes between the event hubs will all be bus only - then lots of busses. I've heard those will be free but we'll see.

Who is planning on going?

My husband and I will, hopefully, our adult children will go with us too. We love the Olympics and I want to take advantage of it being in the US. @LKing is right. If you try and rent a place by SoFi you will end up with a VERY different Olympic experience. Parking is typically >$100 at SoFi for a reason.

I'm not familiar with where the safe and relatively unsafe areas are in Long Beach. You would know better than me. What would you recommend for someone who is planning a visit?

Maybe the ones in the Atlanta area.

They had venues outside of Georgia for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Especially soccer, which was as far away as DC. ...
Sure, but I was addressing the traffic issues in the Atlanta area. The Atlanta venues were closer together than the ones in LA will be, right?

Waterfront and the nicer chains along Ocean are good. Anything near the LGB airport is good. Avoid anything along PCH. If you have never heard of the hotel or hotel brand, avoid it at all costs.

Anyone remember the movie Blue Thunder about an advanced police helicopter armed with a machine gun? The premise was that the Olympics were coming to Los Angeles in 1984 and they were hoping that it might be useful for surveillance, and even to quell violence if it ever came down to it.

How do you plan on dealing with parking? I'm thinking that's going to be a huge issue in some neighborhoods.

I think I have that covered. I have enough off-street parking for anyone who would be staying with us, plus my neighborhood is not all that parking impacted so shouldn't be an issue anyway. parking at the venues might be another issue. Hoping the bus thing works out
OK.

We're hoping to go. DW watch I think all the Olympic games this summer. I wasn't able due to work. We've not been to an Olympics, so our thinking is its easier to see one state side rather than travel abroad. Will keep an eye on the boards to see what others are doing. Priority one will be securing accommodation. Second will be tickets to something...

Yea I also heard about flag-football. When did that even become a sport? Always thought of it as some sort of recreational activity. Maybe pickleball will be next?..................LOL.

Ever since the NFL adopted it as an official side thing. Also pickleball is amazing.

London & Paris had VIP lanes so transport could avoid sitting in traffic. I imagine most games going forward will adopt the same as it worked. Well it did for London and it was good to avoid the queues getting to the venues with staff

Nah. My next Disney World trip is scheduled for that year and it will be a bigger one. So my budget will be going to that, plus trips between now and then.

You could rent some RV's and rent them out.

There aren't many RV parks in Los Angeles and most residential communities have restrictions about RVs.

Most recently in the news is what LA will do with their homeless population. The mayor said that she won't bus them out of LA like other Olympic cities have done. During the pandemic, they housed them in RV parks and hotels. However, both will want to rent to tourists rather than receiving the money that the government pays them to house those without homes.

We have a friend who stays at Dockweiler every summer. They book their reservations far in advance. In 2020, their reservation was cancelled with relatively short notice when TPTB decided to use it as a homeless quarantine site. They found another place to stay, but that was when people weren't traveling. Trying to find a place at the last minute during the Olympics will be much more difficult.
