Hi Folks

Need some some imput into my feelingS about holidays and DIY:confused:
Well we have been to Dis World twice for our holiday and on our return have felt really down having really enjoyed ourselves but coming home realised how much work to be done in our home.

The dilemma this year is whether to book again or do the house up..............l think with three teenagers is to wait til they leave home before spending lots of cash on the home..... dh says it's up to me . we need a new bathroom , extension to the lounge and deco to the hall and landing to be honest life is for living and three teenagers don't care about the deco.:o Me myself just like to live and enjoy..........Maybe l should just go ahead and book a flight other than plan the colour scheme:o DH is non committal to both
Has anyone else has this experience?

Margie

Margie,
Not exactly the same but similar. Early last summer thought about moving in 2004 and not having a 'big' holiday but with interest rates going up and house prices still rising have decided to see how things settle in the next 18 months, so looks like big holidays again!!! Were planning on Florida for 2005 and somewere else in the US this year but haven't quite decided yet.

Not quite the same here.
But we had a dilema of either Getting new furniture for the house or go to disney,As soon as we came home last year we got a suite, and a new table, other than that everything else is staying as DP booked for june this year LOL.

I figured, we arent in great need for new furniture. But a holiday is what we do need :)

If i was you do what you feel is best.

We do 50/50.

Holiday every 18 months, not every year. (We like camping weekends so thats the interm 'holidays' ). When we book we look for good deals and sometimes compromise. i.e I'd like to have stayed onsite, but we are staying LBV instead to save about £450.

Then on the house we do the work that has to be done to maintain its value, and keep in nice order decorating etc.

Really it comes down to how important holidays are to you, and your family. It won't be long and the children will grow and probably not want to go with you. The house should always be there...and still needing work doing probably!

Yes Margie exactly the same dilemma!::yes::

It was should we decorate and do the big things that need doing around the house or go to Orlando and with 3 teenagers too,Orlando has won every time!

Now my eldest doesn't come with us and I've paid a deposit on DD who is 17 but it's not for sure she'll come next October though.

My motto is carpe diem, live for the day:earseek: BUT that doesn't get the house decorated though LOL:hyper:

What will the kids remember the fantastic holidays or a nicely decotated hallway;)

I'm a bad influence though, don't listen to me!

Were 50/50 in this house

We tend to have one decent holiday a year(weve tried the cheaper option and hated every minute)

Although we dont do disney every year(DH choice not mine),we try to go somewhere in America LOL

We had a whole new kitchen last year with solid wood work tops and butler sink, but it was something that was saved for.
And as of yesterday we started our spare room(again we put a little money away now and again, so when we started we knew we could finish without running short or dipping into the holiday fund). Luckily for us, we have a very good plasterer living next door but one, so this saves heaps on labour!!

Personally I like a good holiday and a nice house, but we do this as and when we can afford it(but then seeing as I plan everything its not too bad!).

I think youd be able to find a happy medium,if you work out what the priorities are, write a list, number them 1,2,3 and do it as you can afford.

well I chuckled to myself when I read your post, as we are in the same boat!!:)
We moved into this house 2 years ago, and it still
needs D/G, new bathroom, kitchen, extention ... in other words completely gutting:eek:
Every year its a toss up on either holiday, house.. holiday, house.etc..;)
But the hol seems to win every year!!
I do want the work done on the house but disney fever hits...
On a serious note the kids will soon leave home and there will be no more family hols together. Just loads of diy instead !!

Snap:D

Having spent our last five years holidaying in Florida, this year we have decided to bite the bullet and have all the work done in the house we have been putting off.

Our house in the New Forest has artex on every single wall in the house - with the exception of our new kitchen because we got rid of it in there then:rolleyes: It's been driving us up the wall because we also have beams in every room which means artex and beams together look very nice, but try and find the right colour paint to paint the walls . . . nightmare and we're all fed up with cream in every room.

So, the walls are being un-artexed, Katie's bathroom and toilet downstairs are being knocked into one with new shower unit fitted (three of us and one shower in our bathroom upstairs each morning don't go;) ). This is all costing a fair bit of money.

Last year we were lucky enough to have two great holidays - St Lucia for a week May halfterm (to recover from the MIL's passing - we'd nursed her) and then 2.5 weeks in Florida in October.

Funnily enough, I'm just waiting for my friend to come around at in 10 mins because we're all going to France for a week together - three of them and us, so we're checking out cottages on the internet. That's going to be our holiday . . . good enough for us because we'll be back to Florida next year, the house will not be bothering us and will be wonderful.

Tough decision - but my view was if we go away on a good holiday again, the house is still going to be here needing work when we get back and that would make me even more depressed:(

I say do the trip. You won't have this time with the kids much longer. Enjoy it, get in all the memories and quality time you can. Save the house til their gone as you'll need something to take up the newly found free time LOL.
