Anyone familiar with L&L Hawaiin BBQ? We just had one open near us, and it looks like they are all over Hawaii! There's 2 in Kapolei, which I believe is close to Aulani. Thought we might check it out if it's good, but don't want to bother if it's just meh.

It is very popular but I have had way better in Hawaii and here at home. I would equate it to McDonald's in the hamburger world.

We have a few L&L's around here in SoCal. I would visit the one near you, but save the dining experience on the island for something you cant find anywhere else.
But L&L's is really good in my opinion.

LOVE their Chicken Katsu! Mandatory stop whenever we go! It is just a fast food restaurant though, so don't expect high end or sterling service.

Plenty of other places to spend your hard earned money on in Hawai'i. L&L, as stated before me, is just a run of the mill fast-food type joint. There are numerous places all over that island that have way better drive-in type local eats like: chicken katsu, loco moco, bbq beef etc.

Sounds like that's pretty much the consensus. So speaking of drive-in, then, how about Rainbow Drive-In? I know we'll be near there a couple of times. A friend from work tells me it was his fave local cheap eats. Thoughts?

Personally, I think Rainbow drive-in is great! But, because it is such a tourist hot spot I don't frequent there on our visits to Hawai'i. I don't know what meal you are after but I can say Richie's Drive-In in Kalihi has terrific bbq beef plate lunch and boneless chicken w/gravy! St. Louis also has good eats like the hamburger curry and bento's. (Opinions of a hapa girl born in Ca married to a local boy from Kalihi Hawai'i)

Have to know a local from kaliho to kno

I was wondering how did you know about richies drive inn. You have to be local and grew up or work around kalihi to know of richies. The richies menu is real close to rainbow drive inn because the owner of richies used to work as a cook at rainbows.

Another good place in kalihi is called sugois. The make a mean garlic chicken and hamburger steak. Real popular but a little expensive. Try their garlic chicken bento.

This thread has me wanting a plate lunch soooo bad...

My husband was born and raised in Kalihi! His good friend who works at Tamashiro Market was telling us about the cook from Rainbows. But, we didn't know exactly what role he played in Richie's. I'll bookmark your suggestion on Yelp, we're headed to 'Oahu this June!!
