Already salivating at getting some in April since I’m home and calories and exercise are a...thing again

I‘ve always known that donuts are brought onboard but never asked why. I would guess it requires a lot of frying oil and a dedicated fryer, plus the production of the dough and toppings. The cost/space/value ratio is probably not met for an item that is readily available in port, not a main ‘seller’ and freezable, unlike most pastries. I’ll ask a food manager in Cabanas on my next cruise. That would be awesome, but kitchen space is finite and there are only so many hours in a day to prep. I wonder what would have to be given up in order to make time and space for on-the-spot super-fresh doughnut production.......

Yeah, but they’re frying other things in those fryers, right? It’s not like you can dunk doughnuts into frying oil that was just used for fries or hash browns 10 minutes ago.
I guess they could take out the freezer the Krispy Kremes are in and put in a fryer! Most ships have a dedicated pastry area, so I suspect there is a pastry only fryer there.Yeah, but they’re frying other things in those fryers, right? If you want fresh doughnuts, what other food has to get bumped? What other food prep do you need to take staff members off of in order to fry and prep doughnuts?
I know that place and those donuts! This is all just a reminder of why I don't eat the donuts on the ship. (Plenty of other pastries I'll eat though!) The best donuts I've had were at a Christmas themed family theme park in NH--Doe-nuts. They're freshly made mini donuts--they have a machine that fries them, so you can watch them get made. They toss them in a brown bag with cinnamon sugar and you eat them hot. So yummy. Lol, this thread has made me look to see if we have any free weekends this summer to make a quick trip up...it's probably been 5 yrs since we've been there!

Anything has to be better than Krispy Kremes IMHO. I have eaten many, never bought them though. They always drop them off a the TV stations. About 10 years ago several of the Krispy Kremes here went belly up. The built next to mom and pop donut shops that had donuts that were twice as good for half the price. They’re probably using that fryer for other stuff, too.
I’m not saying it’s impossible. I’m also not saying it wouldn’t be awesome. I’m just saying it’d probably have to come at the cost of something else.
They’re already running and gunning like crazy in there as-is.
Food is not kept in fridges or freezers, but in cold rooms that take up an entire section of the ship. The freezers they have in the kitchens are only there for the last-minute prep, not for long-term storage. We did a backstage tour of the kitchen on NCL - all ships function in the same way - and they request the required food from the bottom level before every service.I guess they could take out the freezer the Krispy Kremes are in and put in a fryer! We did the Galley tour on the Celebrity Eclipse. All the seafood is cooked in a kitchen that is on another floor, away from the other kitchens because so many people have allergies to shellfish. I’m trying to think what other fried food comes out of the pastry kitchen ? I’m pretty sure donuts are the the only thing. Thinking about fried foods onboard, I can think of fries, tater tots, arrancinis... I’m not convinced the fryers are an important cooking tool in the MDR kitchens.
Santa's Village. Have not been there in years. This is all just a reminder of why I don't eat the donuts on the ship. (Plenty of other pastries I'll eat though!) LOL. I would prefer fresh out of the fryer, made on board donuts. Sorry, but THAT is what I expect on a cruise.
