My DH and I are going to WDW in early December for our 10th Anniversary. We're not taking the kids, so we are trying some new restaurants (Boma, LeCellier). We have an ADR at Ohana for the night of our MVMCP, but after reading some great reviews of Kona (and some not so good ones of Ohana), I'm wondering if I should try to switch our ADR for that night. I'd love to hear some opinions.....

Thanks!
Jodi

We have never been to Kona, but we love Ohana! Both DH and I thought that the food was great, and the chef there was really great as well since we have two children with food allergies.

After listening to the podcast, I changed my mind about going to Ohana, because this time I'll be going without kids. DH and I did Kona Cafe without our kids and had a really nice time. We love Ohana, but mostly because our children were with us and they had a blast, and that made supper more enjoyable. So, I changed our ADR from Ohana to Kona Cafe.

I LOVE KONA!! their service and food are wonderful! I'm going back in our next trip!

Kona, Kona. Kona!!!!!

We finally tried dinner at 'Ohana this past trip. The food at Kona is in an entirely different league.:thumbsup2

If no kids....Kona for sure! We have always felt Kona was a hidden gem at WDW and can't wait until we are there in 5 weeks.

You know, I was wondering the same exact thing! And I think I'm going to change my ADRs for Kona. After seeing a lot of sketchy reviews about Ohana and then some consistent reviews on Kona... also my boyfriend and i might have some fun with ohana but at the same time, for our first night we might want something more relaxing.. (i keep on thinking about this one trip how the first night we went to Palo at the Swan and had a very nice time).

I just need to ask some people though... do you think my boyfriend can substitute sticky rice for the broccoli in the teriyaki steak and still get mashed taters with it too for no extra charge?

also.... did they REALLY change the kilauea torte to a blondie one with chocolate inside instead of all chocolate???

My Dh and I went to Ohana twice in the week of our honeymoon. Loved it. great view of water and castle. Food Was SOOO GOOD!! waiters were real friendly. It is definitely our number 1 favorite restaurant there. Saw Kona, it looks so small and no view of anything. But good luck with whatever you do :)

We travel with children but we luv,,luv, luv Ohana's
And cousin Jeff.
have ADR for our up and coming trip!!

I had this exact problem when I was making ADRs. It was pretty torn on the issue then (I was posting on another board). I decided with Kona, I mean I like the hokey stuff but we're 2 23 year olds, and I'd prefer the more "upscale" food rather than the "meat on a stick--although I know it's so much more". The menu just intrigues me more. PLus the DBF loves macademia nuts, and we WERE going for the mahi mahi but now it's for the pie thing. I want to the shrimp! hehe

:thumbsup2 Kona without a doubt! :thumbsup2 Their bread with macadamia butter is worh the trip alone. Wonderful crabcakes. If you can't get there for dinner then go for breakfast!!

I've been to both, and both are excellent. A lot depends on what kind of meal you are looking for:

Kona has the best food. Ohana food is really great, but the range of choice at Kona, and the style of food (posher) makes it the best.

Ohana has better views - out toward the castle across the lake, and in my view, a better atmosphere. There is live music and the servers are very friendly, making a very large effort to welcome you. Kona's servers are very good too - but this is just a normal table service restaurant.

Ohana and Kona are also lit differently - the lighting in Kona is brighter, the lighting in Ohana more moody and atmospheric.

If you have kids, choose Ohana hands-down. If you're adults alone then decide if range and quality of food is more important than atmosphere (still with great food).

For what it's worth, I would choose Ohana, as the experience is more Disney, and more unique. Kona is still excellent, and if you do choose to switch to there you will love it too I'm sure!

Hope this is helpful to you - good luck in your decision!

We love Kona for breakfast and dinner. THe breakfast menu at Ohana is just ok to us and the dinner menu is not our cup of tea....also Ohana is SUPER NOISY!

With no kids.....KONA CAFE:thumbsup2

The food is awesome there....I would go to OHANA'S with the kids.
Although....I went to OHANA'S in Aug without DD....and it was very good.
Happy Planning

Thanks for all of your comments. I think the noise is what I'm concerned with. Although we know that everywhere in WDW is full of kids and we've taken ours there numerous times, it would be nice to have a quiet dinner for our anniversary too. I guess I'll have to call and see if Kona is even available that night. Thanks again!

I certainly do not mean to sound negative yet although I like Kona Cafe, I found it to be anything but quiet!

Never been to Ohana but love Kona! Had their seafood chowder and sticky wings earlier this month - they were great! Have also had their teriyaki steak in the past - it was also very good.

Have also read some negative reviews of Ohana - rushed service, unappealing food. Since it's a set price, I just never wanted to try it (and spend all that money if it turned out to be awful). Kona's right next door and I know it's good!

PS - try Tambu Lounge next to Ohaha - they have the best lettuce wraps I have ever had!!

That's true - we went fairly late at night (9:15 pm) earlier this month, and even though it was not crowded, it was pretty noisy! Great food, though.

I haven't been to Ohana, but I highly recommend Kona! The food there is absolutely wonderful. When we ate there in September it was the one meal where all 3 of us loved what we ordered. We had great service, too.
