Anyone ever have the mahi mahi or the medallions of filet at kona? We are eating there our first night. They both sound so good. This is our first trip since the early 90's.

Beef!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbsup2 We loved Kona so much that we ate there two nights in a row ... and had the same thing both times!!! The FILET!!! ... I like seafood but I am more a shirmp and scallop person. (I'm sure the fish is excellent too ... but BEEF - it's whats for dinner) :teeth:

My DH liked the salad. I got a bowl of chicken noodle soup for my appetizer. I was ready for some "home-like" food and the chicken soup is homemade!!!

And the DESSERTS .................. FAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Drinks and coffee are good too!)

Don't forget to look for the hidden mickey in the tiles on the counter where they show the desserts. You want to check out the desserts sooo ... get a peek at it!

Hidden mickeys, yummy food-yes!! I will get the beef! I am too excited. Now what for dessert??

My DH and I are going for our first time to Kona in 2 weeks and you guys have me really excited. It sounds yummy!!

I've had both many times. The last two times the mahi mahi was so fishy I sent it back. The last time I had the filets they honestly tasted mealy and exactly like liver. After many enjoyable meals at Kona I now stick to the seafood chowder and appetizers. And dessert of course!

I hope it was just a bad night for them!! I have ressies again there for November. Keep being excited!!!

I pulled out the menu so I could refresh my memory. By the way, the salad DH had was the KONA Salad with greens, blue-cheese, strawberries (sometimes pears instead), smoked almonds and a citris vinaigrette.

Desserts:
The first night I got the Apple Brown Betty -- that was the night I was longing for home cooked food. Very comforting and tasty. DH and I each had one of the chocolate volcano which is called Kilauea Torte -- DEATH BY CHOCOLATE!!! YUM!! (His was the first night, I had it the night after). DH, on the 2nd night had the Chocolate Macadamia Nut Tart -- I was so much into my death by chocolate that I didn't taste it. But he had a smile on his face when we left.

I am hoping for the best and hope it is as good when you go as it was when we went ... I am still excited about being there in Nov!!! :sunny:

I don't eat liver, so I can't say that's what the filet medallions tasted like - but I do know I thought they were SO good last year, I'm having them again. And again. And every time I have dinner at Kona. But THIS year, I'm getting the recipe for the reduction!

Strange thing is that I like liver! The filets were just so mealy to us. My mom had had it the trip before and remarked how mealy they were. I ordered it the next trip thinking it was just a fluke. It wasn't. I imagine it depends on what you consider a good steak and what isn't. It was not to my liking at all. Saves more for you!

I loved the mahi-mahi when I ate there in July. The desserts are, like others have said, amazingly good.

Both my DD15 and I had the mahi mahi last week at Kona's. It was great!!! Cooked just right, nice amount of macadamias. DH has the prime rib, yummy, and DD10 had the terriyaki beef. Terriyaki was good, but wouldn't order it again. In fact our server was telling DH about the different cuts of beef thay had and she said the only one she didn't like was the terriyaki because it's not consistent, She did say to order it medium or rarer, because it can be tough cooked well.

My husband has had the Mahi Mahi several times, and I can never shut him up about it. He thinks it is straight from the Tiki Gods table, that and the Kona chowder. On a scale of 1-10 its a 99! He loves it. I mean he could eat it for breakfast , lunch and dinner.

I hear the Turkey medalions is not so great from the servers, so I would take that under advisement. If they say its not good, you have to listen. :teeth:

I'm so glad you asked this question! We'll be at the World in 25 days, and I've been trying to decide between the mahi-mahi & filet or terriyaki steak too! I've heard so many great comments on them I can't decide! It doesn't help that I'm trying to decide between the same entrees (mahi/steak) at Coral Reef either... :confused3 And, yes, I have to decide now, because my 5yo will want every bit of my attention when we sit down!!

To further add to the confusion -- we ate at Kona last week and I had the Mahi Mahi -- LOVED IT!!! DH had the Prime Rib -- he LOVED that too. DD had the Terriyaki Steak and LOVED IT as well. I had some of everyone's food and, if we were visiting again, it would be hard to choose between the Mahi Mahi and the Terriyaki Steak. All steaks were ordered medium well (if that makes a difference?) Have fun eating everyone! Kona was one of our favorites.

DH had the macadamia encrusted mahi mahi in May. He liked it but we both decided that my meal was better. I had the shrimp and scallops. Our entire meals were delicious. We were on the DDP, DH had the pot stickers and the Kilhauea torte and I had the crab cakes (delicious) and the passion fruit orange guava mousse to round things out. We will definitely eat at Kona again on future trips. :teeth:

We were there last month---a table of 12 adults. I think we ordered most everything on the menu between us all. I had the rice bowl and it was one of the best dishes I've ever had!!! Everyone at dinner that night agreed it was the best meal we had on the trip. Going back in early December and I've made ressies for a breakfast and two dinners! We need to keep this a secret by the way. :thumbsup2 Honi

I can't help you. We had dinner there Tuesday, and the Mahi mahi was amazing. Cooked perfectly, and melt in your mouth delicious! My niece enjoyed the teryaki steak, and my Sis IL had the filet. I tasted it and it was also very good. Desserts are wonderful.

Filet with mashed potatoes and asparagus

Both were absolutely delicious! They were so good we didn't even consider sharing (i.e. half for me and half for you) - we held on to our own plates each sure we had the better entree.
