Ok, I don't understand the whole Coach purse craze.

You know I was thinking about this with diaper bags. I do think Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bags are cute but the price is absolutely outrageous!!!!

I think most designer bags are for the most part ugly-Coach,LV,Prada,Marc Jacobs. I would never spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to walk around as free advertising for any company.
My DH overheard me a couple of years ago talking about LV and thought that I liked them. He bought me 2 handbags and 2 pieces of luggage. It was vey sweet of him. However, I turned around and gave them to my then 11 year old daughter. I didn't make a big deal out them being designer bags. She used them as she did any other bag.
It's just leather or fabric.

I buy most of my purses at Payless Shoes, Target, Kmart, or Walmat. I don't think I have EVER paid more than $20 for a purse. I do have a small Liz Claiborne and a small Guess purse in my closet...the closest I get to designer...and both were on clearance for very cheap. I have owned a Gucci, I got it as a gift, I donated it to Goodwill a month later because I really didn't like it.

Everyone has thier item they are willing to spend more for...for me it is organic groceries and travel (including WDW). For others purses is one of those things...

The last time I went to NYC I bought alot of things off the vendors on the streets. I buy it because I like it. I could care less if its real or fake. I could also care less what someone thinks of me because of it.

My cousin's husband buys watches on Canal Street because he likes to wear a nice looking watch but he works in construction so it's not really the best idea. He goes and buys knockoffs of the ones that he has the real ones of, so he can wear the knockoff to work and the real one at home and when they go out I think it's funny and everyone has their reasons.

Me personally, I don't buy designer purses because I don't do leather

I have my opinions about people who buy/use fake stuff - I'll leave that out for now. However, I strongly suggest everyone who doubts the link to terrorism and organized crime simply do this...

Everytime I see someone using a fake bag, buying counterfeit DVDs on the streets in Manhattan and so on - I see more money getting into the hands of people who did nothing to earn it and could very well have the potential to harm us with it.

So - morals and self-righteous indignation aside: counterfeit goods are extremely dangerous to all of us in many, many ways.

Spend your hard-earned money on something else.

Ok, I don't understand the whole Coach purse craze. There seems to be a lot of people out there with them, and I can't see spending up to and over $300 on a purse. Money I would much rather spend on an annual pass to WDW. My purse limit is under $100 and really closer to $50.

I guess your choice to spend money on your AP to WDW is ok, and mine to spend money on a bag is not ok?

Purses are my "thing". Coach, in particular. My husband doesn't complain about it, because I bust my butt at work, and I can afford to treat myself. Nobody in my family suffers because it. Vacations still carry on, food is on our table, and I'm not contributing to terrorism.

He says nothing about my purses, and I say nothing when he spend $250 bucks on a fishing reel. He has twenty of them attached to various rods, hanging carefully in the garage. They all look alike to me, but I doubt when he's standing in the water, if those other fisherman are looking down their nose at him because they believe his is a fake, or God forbid, they have better.

When we start judging people by whether they're carrying fake bags, or determining that what they're carrying must be a fake, because of their outfit, it says more about us, then them, IMO.

I went to the grocery store yesterday, in workout shorts, an old t-shirt, and older-than-dirt flip flops... carrying my newest "thing". File me away in the "who gives a crap what other people think" category.

I've been on these boards for a few years now. This topic comes to light LITERALLY EVERY YEAR.

And it's always the same thing. Fake bags fund terrorism, no they don't, I'll never buy fake, I'll never buy real, people who spend so much money on designer goods are stupid, I judge people who wear fake things, etc.

Personally, I don't see the point in knockoffs. If you can't buy the real thing, don't. The quality is far superior for the authentics and for many of us who have collections, it's quite easy to spot a fake.

I love designer handbags. I don't look down on those who buy fakes, though I don't really understand it, since the quality and design is inferior. Buy a nice bag from Target, or better yet, go to TJ Maxx. They often carry older Coach bags for a fraction of their original retail value.

I've also worked at Coach before too, so that might add to my dislike for fakes.

Honestly though, the people who look down on those of us who don't mind spending a few hundred on a handbag are just as bad as those who turn their nose up at people who can't afford the real thing. I've seen so much self rightousness on these boards from the people who claim they would "NEVER throw that much money away on a handbag".

Bottom line: The goods on Canal street are fake, technically illegal, pale in comparison to the quality of an authentic item, almost always bad copies, and are technically stealing money away from and illegally using the copyright of the designer companies. Personally I'd rather just get the real thing.

I never said not ok, just didn't I didn't understand it. There is a difference.

always wonder at the women I see carrying around a Louis Vuitton knock-off in a local grocery store wearing flips-flops, a stained tee shirt and Levis and pushing a runny-nosed kid in a cart. Do they really think they are fooling anybody? I suppose a woman carrying a $2,000 purse could be wearing jeans from 1995...but I don't think so. Why would anybody even carry a knock-off when there are perfectly nice, non-fake purses out there?

Wow, I guess that could have been me, minus the child in the cart. I have a "rip-off" LV purse that I purchased for $25.00 because I liked it. I had no idea it was a rip-off until DS's girlfriend commented on my beautiful LV purse. I was not trying to copy anyone, pretend to be rich or support terrorists, I just liked the purse! I guess I have no interest in spending $2000 on a purse. That is half the amount of a Jamaican vacation. Personally I would much rather take the vacation then buy 2 purses.

I have Coach bags that I bought at the outlet, all of them were under $100 a piece, some closer to $50 during a really good sale. I have a Petunia Pickle Bottom too, bought it at Nordstrom Rack for under $100 also.

It's all about choices, my ONE child has an expensive stroller, but we ended up paying more for a stroller that she can face us in so we can keep an eye on her since her seizures picked up. Ok, actually, my one child has four strollers currently, but that's another thread.

By the way........... If you see someone carrying a fake bag and it causes you to come to some conclusion about them, it really says more about you!

This is so true. I can afford real designers, but I'll buy a fake if I have the opportunity. To me, it's about getting the best deal for my money.

I am from NJ and frequent NYC 10x a year. The people who sell these bags, IMHO are just small little guys. they look kind urban and not all that wealthy. I can't imagine that they front terrorists.


I would say the hot dog guy or nut guys are more reasonable to be connected someway but have a hard time believing the small little handbag guy who walks around to find a spot to set up

I think you're just naive.

I live in a section of Brooklyn that many consider "Urban" (I hate that term)

I don't doubt for a minute that terrorists are involved in the knock off trade.

Of course they're not going to be the ones on the front lines. Why would they risk going jail? Why risk calling attention to yourself or operation by doing something you can pay others to do?

I think this is just like the drug trade. The people who you see on the streets and in the news are not the ones who are trafficking the product into the country or making the big dollars.

I had a coach purse several years ago. To be honest, I didn't like it. As for other designer purses I don't like the look of them.

We all have something that we like to spend money on and that's just fine. No one else should be judging us for it.

Personally I like buying Vera Bradley bags and electronics.

To the OP....honestly do what you think is right for you.
