Knitting Needles

Does anyone know what the airlines/cruiseship regulations are on knitting needles? I assume I can not take it along with me on my carry on. If I pack them in my suitcase do you think it would be okay?

I started a sweater and would like to finish it, but don't want them confisgated (spelling?).

Anyone know?

Thanks!

Deb

If it is in your checked bags for your flight, you shouldn't have any problem. I would just put them near the top of your bag -- that way if the guys x-raying them have any question what the long pointy things are, they don't need to dig through all of your stuff. They don't care about repacking neatly! And if they make it thorough airport security, you'll have no problem with ship security.

Thank you Clten.. I will do that. I've never had them go through my luggage yet. I'll make sure to put them at the top of my suitcase.

I carry on my crochet needles on the plane all of the time. For a while I was not allowed to, but now I am back to crochetting on the plane. Just remember to bring rounded tip scissors, not pointy ones (I borrow my DS kindergarten scissors).

Check out the website for your airline and you can find out guidelines there. That is what I did.

Hello, I flew into Washingtion, Dulles airport the week of the inauguration and I was able to take both my crochet and knitting needles on the planes.. As it was the Airline hostesses even helped me with a stitch I had trouble with..I would call the Airline your flying with and double check though..

Good luck

The most recent list a the TSA website (undated 5/05) says that crochet & knitting needles ARE allowed in carry ons and checked luggage on airplanes. The only problem with this is that individual security personnel can make their own decisions at the gate. So if they decide it's not allowed they can stop you from taking them on the plane. That being said I always take my crocheting in my carry-on but pack an extra hook in my checked luggage. The only problem I've had was traveling between Ireland and France, the security personnel would not allow my DD15 to bring her crochet hook in her carry on but completely missed the hook in my bag :confused3 .

Had no problems with bringing crochet hooks and even scizzors in checked baggage on the ship.

I took VERY pointed embroidery scissors in my checked baggage to use with my cross stitch. No problems either with the airport or the ship. I don't try to take them in carry on.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll call Southwest and find out what the regulations are.

CM Mom.. I took my mini Fiskers on my carry on and they took it away. I made it to Florida with it in my case, but returning home was not the same. It was a bummer because I love those sissors. They are great for my cross stitch!

Yep, those are the ones. The Fiskars that are about 5 or 6" long and have VERY sharp points. Fortunately, I cut lengths of the floss I think I will use on the plane ahead of time and packed the scissors in my CHECKED luggage. So far they haven't complained about my needle.

Cross stitch in the loungers on deck 4 is one of my goals for next cruise.

Disneytart is right...the personnel at the inspection stations and the gate can make their own decisions and choices. Prepare to bring only what you're willing to leave behind! With that said, the idea about packing one set of needles and carrying the others on is a good one.

We fly as a family several times a year and my DH also travels by air an additional one or two times per month. We've occasionally had to give up some really silly things (not sure who I was going to attack with facial tweezers but I guess they could be used to assemble something bad? :confused3 ) but I'd rather those inspectors err on the side of caution. Of course, I wasn't excited when we made it out of one airport but not the airport for the return home UNTIL MY DAUGHTER GAVE UP THE 9-INCH SCISSORS IN THE BOTTOM OF HER BACKPACK! Yikes! It was her school backpack too, and she just didn't empty it well enough before she packed for the trip. It's pretty scary to know it was missed the first time. :rolleyes1

This is what happened to me. I had some pointy ended fold up scissors that I love and they almost took them the last time I flew. Luckily my sister was at the airport picking up my parents for their trip as we were leaving so I just jumped out of line and gave them to her. Good luck and happy knitting!

I have travled with my Crochet and Mom has had her knitting needles. I take finger nail clippers to clip any threads or yarns during flight. When in doubt of what might be confiscated - take a self addressed stamped envelope with you so you can always mail something home.
