My son has been getting Kid K'nex since he turned 5 and he loves them!! He plays with them daily. He got a tub of regular k'nex when he turned six and they are still a little too small for him. I think the kid k'nex are for ages 4-7.
I would go with Lincoln Logs enless the child is very creative. Mainly because they are easier to use for that age IMO. I always was Very good with lego's so see if those are a possibility.
My son always love Lincoln Logs, K'nex, and Lego's. His favorite has always been the Lego's and we have a HUGE container of them. He still pulls them out from time to time.
For a 5 year old though, I'd definitely say the Lincoln Logs. They're much simpler for a little fellow. I think my son was older when we started buying the K'nex. If you'd get anything elaborate (like the ferris wheel, or roller coaster) he'd definitely need lots of help deciphering it all. The Lincoln Logs though can be tossed together in any fashion he likes.
Just judging from DS (5), who has both Lincoln Logs and K'Nex (first Kids K'Nex then the original). He plays with his K'nex a lot more. He likes that he can do a lot more with them.
