OK, fess up. Who used to dine at the Kmart cafeteria back in the day?

I was thinking about their apple dumplings the other day. I used to beg for them when I was little. Sooo good. I tried googling a knock off recipe but no luck.

We also used to get their sub sandwiches. They were the best and so cheap.

So how else used to eat there and what did you like?

I will accept Kresge cafeteria offerings as well.

They closed the one near our old apartment 4 years ago. I was so sad! Everything we ate there was so yummy! I miss that place!

I remember the Kmart Cafeteria. I don't remember what was served or anything, because I was really young when we went. It's kind of blurry because it was like the 70's or something but I remember my mom would take me to Kmart and it was like a big deal, we stayed for what seemed like a really long time and going to the cafeteria was the highlight of the trip. That and some kind of icee machine that had a polar bear.

My mom would buy sub sandwiches and we would then buy our drinks at the Kresge snack bar. It was the first place that had self serve soft drinks and we would eat in the window. When my dad would ask where we wanted to eat my brother and I would always say Kresge, buy my dad would rather stay home that be caught eating in the window at the dime store!

Once K-Mart opened we didn't eat in the snack bar, but we would get subs and ham all the time!

I used to go there. A lot. But for the life of me can't remember any specific food. I just remember the soda dispenser. I used to mix all the flavors. And I remember the snack bar with the Icees and soft pretzels. And popcorn. I used to love K mart when I was a teen.

I remember and loved the french fries. Not sure if still there but ate at one in Daytona Beach about 5 years ago. My DH had never seen one so he enjoyed it and was still cheap!

We didn't eat at the cafe, but I do remember that there would be people in there eating every time we went there. And back in the late 70's early 80's, that is where mom did most of her shopping.

But I do remember getting stuff from the snack bar all the time. The popcorn was as good if not better than movie popcorn. And I don't think we ever left the store with out a couple of subs going with us.

OMG! Those Kmart apple dumplings were to die for!!! My Mom and I still talk about them!!! The white sauce that they put over them made them even more yummy!!!!

We didn't have KMarts near us, but I loved eating at the Woolworth lunch counter or getting pretzels from the Bradlees snack bar.

K-Mart had cafeterias? Never heard of or saw any of 'em. *wondering if I'm too old or too young?*

Woolworth was awesome to eat at. Didn't get to a lot but it was good when we did. The French toast was to die for.

I completely forgot about them after a cafeteria until I read this. I can picture what ours looked like but I don't think we ever ate there (our eating out when I was little was a great treat and only once in while).

:offtopic: On that note, I laugh about how we pick up a pizza without even thinking about it but when I was little we thought we were extra special when our parents would bring a take out pizza home...

I do not remember Kmart cafeterias, but I do remember when Sears used to sell Icees and (I think) popcorn.

The Kmart near me just opened a small Little Caeser's restaurant up near the exit.

My family got into the eating at Kmart at the tail end. Cheap prices large portions. My young DD's toddlers ate free.

s a kid Woolworths, Grants and some Walgreens had sitdown restaurants in them but I never got to eat at any of them. Woolworths had counter service on main floor restaurant upstairs, Grants had counter and table service.

I don't know if it is the same thing but when I was a kid we used to go visit my grandmother once a week and take her shopping. We always ate at the Kmart diner. I don't remember any specific food but I remember thinking it was so cool to eat there.

We had no KMart where I grew up, but I definitely remember eating at the little restaurant/snack bar at either Kresge's or Woolworth's at Downtown Crossing in Boston a lot when I was a kid (with my mom and sister). I can't remember exactly what I'd get but I believe it was a sandwich (turkey club, maybe? cut diagonally, the way I cut sandwiches), and it definitely came with those delicious golden French fries! I think it also had those high stools on a metal pole that spun, and some tables, as well. Definitely among my earliest memories and the thing I always looked forward to the most when shopping back then! ;)

(Does anyone from the Boston area remember what I'm talking about and which store it was? It's possible they each had one and I'm blending my memories together!)

PS I take it Kresge's was a precursor to KMart? ETA looked it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kmart
