Kmart Cafeteria

I have such fond memories of Kmart and Woolworths. Every Wednesday my grandparents and I would trek to Fay's Drugstore and the off to Kmart for lunch. On Fridays we would go to Woolworths and have lunch in the restaurant or cafeteria.

I loved sitting at the Woolworths counter and the chocolate malts.

:grouphug: to my grandparents for spoiling me :love:.

Yes, that was part of my childhood too. Somehow the now-ubiquitous McDonalds in all the WalMarts just doesn't have the same charm!

Our Kmart never had a cafeteria but it did have a Little Caesar's in the back that we ate at a few times. We had another department store, Hills, that had a snack bar with hot dogs, popcorn, candy, Icees.. I loved that place! We ate at the restaurants in Woolworths and JCP quite a bit.

We had no KMart where I grew up, but I definitely remember eating at the little restaurant/snack bar at either Kresge's or Woolworth's at Downtown Crossing in Boston a lot when I was a kid (with my mom and sister). I can't remember exactly what I'd get but I believe it was a sandwich (turkey club, maybe? cut diagonally, the way I cut sandwiches), and it definitely came with those delicious golden French fries! I think it also had those high stools on a metal pole that spun, and some tables, as well. Definitely among my earliest memories and the thing I always looked forward to the most when shopping back then! ;)

(Does anyone from the Boston area remember what I'm talking about and which store it was? It's possible they each had one and I'm blending my memories together!)

PS I take it Kresge's was a precursor to KMart? ETA looked it up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kmart

I used to eat at the Woolworth's in Downtown Crossing too! I would go in with my grandmother once a week for shopping and we would eat at the cafeteria. Good memories!

As a teen I worked at a Friendly's in our local mall. For my lunch I would walk over to the Woolworth's for an open face turkey sandwich. soooo good!

I don't recall eating at it, but we regularly went to the closest KMart and they had this dimly lit area in the back. What I mostly remember was the Icee and popcorn stand near the front door. When a new Super KMart opened in the 90s, there was no cafeteria, but they did have an Icee and popcorn stand.

Yeah, I think Woolworth's cafeterias even had their own name: Harvest House. They could sometimes be entered from the street without going into the store. Most Woolworths had a lunch counter, some with additional tables and waitress service, or a deli counter/snack bar. But only the crème de la crème Woolworths had a Harvest House.

hah, I forgot all about them, I did as a kid, I remember liking it

We didn't have KMarts near us, but I loved eating at the Woolworth lunch counter or getting pretzels from the Bradlees snack bar.

I remember both of those stores!

I have very vague memories of going to Woolworth's and a yummy grilled cheese sandwich.

I remember getting subs and popcorn from the Kmart snack bar/restaurant in the 1970's. Those subs were really good. I also remember getting candy and nuts sold by the pound at Sears. Good memories!

The K Mart Cafeteria, the K Mart Deli Counter, and blue light specials.

Good Times. Good Times.

Woolworth's Luncheonette and fountain. More good times.

When I was a little girl, we had an SS Kresge, and my Dad would take me there when the tube went out on the TV (back when televisions had tubes in the back of the TV). I loved it, because after my Dad and I walked around, looking at things, making note of what things I would like "when we got rich", and then helping my father pick out the right picture tube, we would eat at the SS Kresge food counter! I have no idea what I would eat, I was just thrilled to be with my Dad and having a treat.

My parents were immigrants, so frivolous things like eating out didn't happen often, and it was a struggle to make it in America when you had a hard time with the language, so those times with my Dad at the Kresge were very special.

I remember years later, being very sad when the KMart, which the SS Kresge turned into, was remodeled and the food counter taken away. I think the KMart became a Target, and though they have their own food area, it just isn't the same. :sad2:

This just gave me goosebumps. I went through a horrid, scary marriage but got out of it. Soon after I was broke, I just wanted out didn't want financial anything. I had my 3 little boys & we decided to go for a walk (no car) I had enough money to buy some bubbles & crayons. When we got their my boys saw the Kmart cafe. They sold juice boxes for .25 or .50 and they got so excited because I agreed they could each get one. We were the only ones there. We sat down with the juice & they were so happy. Soon after the lady working came over with a big plate of fries & 3 hot dogs. I will NEVER forget this!!!! Ever!
Obviously we are fine now... It's been 9 years my boys are now 14, 14 and almost 11. We've been to disney and appreciate everything. I also take the opportunity to help whenever I can, to give back.

All choked up here reading this. What a nice thing that was to do! :goodvibes I agree, I remember when people do things for me and try to give back or pay it forward when I can, too. Thanks for sharing the story. (I will show my kids later.) Your boys must have been so happy!

OK, fess up. Who used to dine at the Kmart cafeteria back in the day?

I was thinking about their apple dumplings the other day. I used to beg for them when I was little. Sooo good. I tried googling a knock off recipe but no luck.

We also used to get their sub sandwiches. They were the best and so cheap.

So how else used to eat there and what did you like?

I will accept Kresge cafeteria offerings as well.

Didn't even know they 'ever' had a cafeteria! I'm not a 'youngster' either!! :confused3

I remember the Woolworths in Downtown Crossing. Now a Marshalls? I don't think that I ever ate there. Sometimes we would eat at the restaurant in Filenes on one of the upper floors. We would often eat at the hot dog stand in Filenes Basement. I miss Jordan Marsh Bakery!

I worked at Kmart in the mid and late '80's ... started in the full-service restaurant (Brighton, MI) and moved to the deli when I turned 18. I'm more than happy to share the recipe for their subs! It's here on my food blog: http://familyrecipes-pookie.blogspot.com/2012/03/classic-super-sub.html It's important to remember that the onions were paper thin and the tomatoes were very thin. All the veggies were sliced on the big slicer in the morning before the store opened. Having the lettuce thin is also important. I made these subs for years there...they only had bologna, cotto salami and the last meat was never labeled - ever. We jokingly called it "mystery meat" because of the lack of label. Today you can use old fashioned loaf or dutch loaf - they're all about the same. The link above is for their Super Sub, it had twice the meat, a chewy roll and shaved ham. For their classic sub just use a soft 6" sub roll, half the meat and omit the ham. Easy peasy.
We sold bags of ham and cheese sandwiches on burger buns - ham & cheese 4/$1.50, chopped ham & cheese 4/$1.00. We made ham & cheese platters by the hundreds every May, June and July.
As for the apple dumplings??? They came in frozen and were baked on-site. The white sauce was melted vanilla ice cream, slightly warmed.
The secret to their AMAZING onion rings and fried fish??? 12 cans of Red, White and Blue beer, opened and poured into a 5 gallon bucket and left in the refrigerator overnight to "stale" without a lid. The next day, pour in a bag of Drake's Batter Mix (http://www.drakesbattermix.com/), the big bag. Then gently whisk until smooth. The onions were always HUGE and sliced 1/2" thick on the slicer then separated into rings, dredged in dry Drake's Mix then dipped into the wet mix and deep fried. Dredge the fish in the dry mix then wet before deep frying also.
Our deli served the best fried chicken I've ever had (considering KFC was literally located in our parking lot, that's saying a lot!). We thawed bags of frozen chicken pieces in buckets of hot water - VERY HOT WATER. Then dredge in flour with salt and pepper, and deep fry until done. Breasts first, then thighs, legs and wings.
We had pizza snacks (made with lard) that were the bomb-diggity. Nachos with regular and spicy cheese - canned cheddar cheese sauce mixed with jarred jalapenos and some of the juice.
They did have THE BEST POPCORN in town...and Icees...and the soft pretzels are the same ones you can buy in the frozen food section now. Spritz the frozen pretzel with water and dip the top into the salt and bake.
Hope this helps!!
