Kresges Apple Dumplings

I use to work at Kresges when I was a teenager. You said that you could
not find a recipe for their apple dumplings with vanilla sauce and I can
tell you why. First of all the apple dumplings came in already made and
frozen all we did was bake them. As for the vanilla sauce that went on
them, it was vanilla pudding from a can but with extra milk added to it.
This should solve the problem. Confession is I always liked this dessert
myself. I worked in the cafeteria of Kresges. Hope this helps you out.

I would always order the kid's grilled cheese and fries.

Our Kmart had the regular cafeteria in the back of the store and had a mini deli counter up front. Blue Light Special on Ham Sandwiches!!! Think Arby's small sandwich with ham instead of roast beef and that's what they were.

We had a luncheonette in Woolworth's and an Ice cream counter in Thrifty too.

Now. All gone.

I miss Thriftys!!! My favorite was the double chocolate malted crunch! :woohoo:

OK, fess up. Who used to dine at the Kmart cafeteria back in the day?

I was thinking about their apple dumplings the other day. I used to beg for them when I was little. Sooo good. I tried googling a knock off recipe but no luck.

We also used to get their sub sandwiches. They were the best and so cheap.

So how else used to eat there and what did you like?

I will accept Kresge cafeteria offerings as well.

I have never been in a K-Mart that had a cafeteria. Is it a regional thing?

Bummer. I will see if I can find just a good apple dumpling recipe then.

The blog you linked had a Brandy sauce. I don't think that sounds like it at all. The thinned out vanilla pudding is probably what it was. That's more what I remember.

Someone mentioned Sears and I remember they had "hot nuts" on a rotating tray along with candy. I always begged for Chicka-stix or maple nut goodies.

I really want some treats now!

DH just chimed in, his favorite meal at Woolworths's was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and wax beans. He also remembers the parakeets and goldfish in the store, lol.

I remember our K-Mart having a food island back it the 70's. It was not really big but you could get sine items there. I loved the little .25 ham sandwiches. I little bit of boiled thin sliced ham on a small hamburger bun with mustard and shredded lettuce. I would get 4 of them!!!!!

I worked at Kmart through high school and I ate in the cafeteria a lot for my lunch/dinner break lol

They had cherry cheesecake..I ate a lot of that while pregnant with my son lol

It's Chocolate Malted Krunch. And it was my favorite too. It was 10 cents a scoop when Baskin Robbins was 25 cents too. And it was those mechanical straight scoops too so you got more in a scoop. They used wafer cones because the cylindrical scoop fit in em. But for so much more ice cream, it was worth the trade off. I am told that Rite-Aid still carries and serves the Thrifty Ice Cream in some of its Southern California Stores and that there are one or two independent locations that sell it out west. Next time I'm out there, I'll have a look.

We didn't have K-Mart growing up but eating at JJ Newberry's or Grant's counter was a Saturday tradition.

I remember the K-mart cafeteria! We didn't eat there often but when we did I had french fries with gravy:blush: Sounds kind of weird now but it was really good.

Of course I ate there. I actually worked there one summer in college. I announced my very own blue light specials! :cool1:

I grew up near the very first Kmart (Garden City, MI). I do not remember a cafeteria for the life of me and my mom shopped there all the time. I do remember the cafeteria in Woolworth!

My dad was a Kmart Cafeteria manager back in the day (he was an assistant store manager and the cafeteria was part of his responsibility.) So I asked him about the apple dumplings. I hate to tell you, but he said they were shipped in frozen. And the sauce came from Gordon Foods.

Needless to say, I had more than my fair share of Kmart food growing up! I loved breakfast in the grill, the eggs and ham were very good! And I loved the ham sandwiches from the deli.

Completely off topic, but this reminded me of the time my family went to visit an Amish area and my dad came up to my mom and said, "That jam you just stood in line for a half hour to buy is being scooped out of a huge Welch's container into special Amish jelly jars." He even took a picture to prove it to her later. :lmao:

K-Mart had cafeterias? Never heard of or saw any of 'em. *wondering if I'm too old or too young?*

Ours all used to have the submarine sandwiches, kind of like a deli, but no cafeteria. My mom used to love being in K-Mart just before lunch and hearing "Blue Light Special next 10 minutes, 2 submarine sandwiches for $1".

Yeah, I ate there a time or two, when I worked at K-Mart one summer on break from college. I can't remember exactly what I ate- but I think it had gravy on it. :lmao:

My Dad was a Kresge and Kmart manager in the 60's & 70's. I ate at the Kmart cafeteria a lot as a kid, but the only think I ever remember getting was taquitos with "green sauce" (which I now know to be guacamole). I'm sure I had other things, but that was always my favorite.
