Okay, looking to make the jump to a Kindle. Not sure, though, if I should go with the regular or the Fire. I will say, I do enjoy sitting outside and reading, and I have read you can't do that with the Fire.

I use my Fire outside all of the time, and sometimes it is hard to see, but not always. I would say that if you are looking for something strictly for reading, go with the regular Kindle, but if you are wanting something with web/gaming/video capability, go with the Fire. We have one Fire and we use it constantly. We are nearing the point of buying a 2nd one. :rotfl:

I agree with this. I had the 2nd Generation Kindle and loved it for reading. It was light, there was no glare, and I could easily get free books for it. I now have a Fire which I love even more. I love that you don't need an external light when reading in the dark and that I can do so much more than read. If you are concerned about the glare they make screen protectors which can help with the glare. If you have no use for the internet/app functions of the Fire then save the money and buy the regular, but if you would use both then the Fire is awesome.

We have the basic Kindle, keyboard Kindle and a Kindle Fire here in this house. I agree with the other posters. I love my Fire but it isn't the best for reading outside, imo. But you can do it, it's just not as good as the other Kindles. I love being able to read on it in bed though since the screen is backlit.

If you only want to read then I would go with the Kindle. The fire is heavy and if I only wanted it for reading this would be a real annoyance but because I surf, facebook and check email on it I deal with it.

I have a kindle. Imagine the places you read- would you be feel comfortable/be able to take a Kindle Fire with you easily/comfortably? Are you "replacing" books or are you looking for something that does more?

My answer is "no"- I love to read on the beach (glare, more expensive to replace...) and I wanted something to take on vacation (theft/loss). I prefer something more lightweight and I really carry it everywhere.

The battery of the eink lasts forever.

I love reading on my kindle so much that I own an Ipad and have no books on it. I traveled by plane to see friends and carried both with me.

I have both and use them both. I keep my Kindle in my purse with plenty of books to read. I think the page is easier on my eyes than looking at a backlit screen. I use my Fire for playing games and the internet - I am on it right now while my laptop is laying close by. I find it a bit heavy to carry in my purse and especially to hold for extended periods as in reading. It is good for reading in darker rooms which I can't do on the Kindle.

I used my Kindle Fire on the beach, under an umbrella and it was fine. I just turned the contrast up. It used the battery a little more quickly but it was just fine.

I love my fire but I do so much more then read on it. If you only want to read save the money and and get the original.

Agree with the previous 2--if you just want to read, get the Kindle.

If you want to do more than read, you may want to consider the new Google Nexus N7 tablet, which is $199 for 8 gb ($249 for 16 gb) and IMHO is the first bona fide tablet competitor to the iPad. Pretty sweet.

I do the same.. I have my regular Kindle to read and then the fire for web stuff and games. I never read on my Fire.

I've got both and wondered how I ever lived without all the fun features. I do love to read but the fire has everything, including a free app every day in the app store. I have built up quite the collection since I got it at Christmas and my 2 y/o DS loves the toddler apps on it as well. It is useful to keep him quiet while in the car or out to dinner. I took it to Aruba and had absolutely no problem reading outside

Same here. I prefer "turning" the pages with a click with the regular Kindle.

My original kindle died not too long ago and I was unsure whether to get a regular kindle or the fire to replace it. We already have an ipad. I have to be honest, I HATE reading on the ipad (or anything that is backlit). It strains my eyes and I find it almost impossible to read outdoors. I opted for the kindle touch. The case I got for the touch has a built in pop up reading light that is just perfect.

I agree 100%. My DH has a Fire and I have the basic Kindle. I am SO jealous of what he can do on his Fire - until we go outside. Then I can read and he can't because of the glare. But if I had to do it over again, I would get the Fire too.

Another owner of both. I have a Kindle keyboard a Fire. The keyboard is my go to reading device. I have 3g on it so when I travel without wi-fi the browser can serve as a basic web browser.

I rarely read on the Fire--clicking a button is much more natural then swiping. It's extending the life of my ancient laptop. I mainly bought it to watch free streeming videos with Amazon Prime. But the web browser is awesome. Even with an anti-glare protector I can barely read on it outside.

Figure out what you want it for. Then go from there. :thumbsup2

I own a Kindle Keyboard and the Kindle Fire and love both for what they do. The Fire is great for web browsing, watching movies, apps, etc, but I use the Keyboard for all my reading. I have the 3g, so I love that I can use it virtually anywhere.

I love reading on my Fire and hate searching on the web with it. Maybe I'm not tech savvy enough to actually click on the things I want and have the proper thing selected! I am a big fan of adjusting my contrast and bachground colors to suit my enviroment. But, I do have problems with it when I am in full sunlight. One of my friends, who also owns a Fire, invested in a $20 screen protector that cuts glare. It does proform well in full sunlight. Its on my "I might buy if I can convince myself to spend the money on it" list.

Get both!

If you get the cheapest eink Kindle plus the Kindle Fire it is $278 which is only $19 more than I paid for my first eink Kindle 2 years ago.
