Thinking about getting DD11 a Kindle Fire for Christmas. Does anyone have feedback on the size? Do you think she'd be happier with the 7 inch HDX or the 8.9 inch HD? They are the same price.

DD likes to watch movies on her iTouch and she's been borrowing my iPad for reading books lately. I'd love feedback on which size seems better from anyone who actually has a Kindle (either 7 in or 8.9) and can let me know how they like it. Does the 8.9 inch seem a LOT bigger?

I have the Kindle Fire HD I think it is the 7in. I like it but I saw where on the HDX you will be able to download prime movies from Amazon if you are a prime member. I just got my Kindle for Mother's Day and I am thinking about upgrading mine to the HDX and give mine to my daughter. But I haven't decided for sure. I think your DD would be happy with either.

The biggest difference between the two, other than their size, is their resolution. The 7 inch HDX has better resolution. It would be better to have higher resolution with a larger screen instead of a lower resolution.

They have them on display at Staples and (I think) Best Buy. Can you somehow finagle an errand with DD and walk by them? If she's interested in them, she'll stop and touch them - then you could get her opinion.

My 12 year old has a 7 inch Kindle Fire and she loves it. I think the size is perfect for a young girl. :)

DD9 and DH both have Kindle Fire HD 7", DD loves hers DH wants to upgrade to Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" screen. We will be giving his "old" Kindle Fire HD to DS12. DS12 does not take care of things very well so he will be excited to get a device, if he breaks it he has to buy the next one.

I do like that feature, especially for long car trips. From looking on their site, I think the new Fire HD will also have that ability. I'm leaning toward the HDX since it's upgraded technology, but I wasn't sure if the size might make her wish she had the bigger version. The 8.9 in HDX is not an option since I just can't justify it in the budget. Do you find the 7 inch to be a good size? Is that the size you will get again for your new one?

Great idea! I love this suggestion!

WE have 4 Kindle Fire 7", kids are 15, 13, 11, 7 and 4. And a Kindle HDX 8.5", shared with kids and dh. We use them all, and we use them all the same way, movies, tv shows, you tube videos, email, web surfing etc.

Everyone in the household loves them, we take them on vacation in the car or plane, etc.

DD12, DS8, and I each got an 8.9" HD for Christmas last year. I love the size for reading and shopping. The older I get the more I appreciate larger font!

For a kid, my advice would be to consider the 7" HD. You can get an Amazon gift card for her with the money you save.

Thank you! That was exactly what I needed to know. I think I would prefer the 8.9 inch because I, too like the bigger font as my eyes get older. ;)

For DD I think the 7 inch HDX will work perfectly and it will be a little easier for her to carry around, too!

Our DD has a smaller kindle. She LOVES that it fits in her Vera Bradley hipster.

I personally prefer reading from my ipad.

I love my Nook HD...Dh gave it to me for Christmas. And with the Google apps, it's a Kindle, too!

I bought my granddaughter (6) a Kindle Fire HD 7" for Christmas last year. She loves it and we have had no issues with it unlike the 4 other brands we bought before this one. All four of them had to be returned for a refund because something was always wrong with them. I would recommend buying at Toys-R-Us. They have a great 15 month service plan that starts after the 30 day return policy. I think I paid maybe $35 but it covers everything that happens to it. I dropped her tablet and shattered the screen! I have had to use a service plan for several different items I bought at T-R-U and have never had one issue. They send T-R-U gift cards to refund the purchase price.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but can anyone list the differences between the Nook and the Kindle? A few years ago I bought my niece a Nook (that's what she wanted). I'm thinking of getting one for myself, but was wondering what the pros/cons were for each. Or is it just personal preference?

We go DD1 a Fire for her 4th birthday last year & it's been GREAT for her. The parental controls are really awesome & we haven't had a single problem with it. We have Prime so she can watch shows/movies on it. Got a good case for it and it's been perfectly fine -- though she's very responsible for a 4yo. We've spent very little in terms of apps; DH checks the app of the day every day for her.

We got the cheapest, non-HD version with ads because she's 4, so I can't really comment to that.

Has anyone used any of the Word programs or PowerPoint apps for their Kindle? I'm wondering if she might be able to use it for school work as well as reading and entertainment. Thanks so much, you guys are a wealth of knowledge as always!!!:thumbsup2
