I had posted on here before trying to decide between the kindle and nook color. My question is, on the kindle....can you buy and play games on it?? I was leaning toward the nook color because it was in color, but really don't want to pay over $300 (with warranty). Just in case it doesn't get used very much.

My mom wants one for christmas and I am leaning toward the kindle now, but just want to make sure you can play games on it too! That's mainly what she wants it for and to use the internet.

The Kindle is really just a book reader. Mine has an experimental (i.e. beta) web browser and MP3 player on it, though I've never used either. If you want quality web surfing, games, etc on a kindle sized device you are likely looking at a tablet.

Thanks! I know her coworker has one and she said she can play games, but maybe she only has one on there.
Maybe I should go with the nook color then, since the nook is capable of that. The most she will do is surf the internet a little. She doesn't use mp3 players or anything like that.

Hi! I definitely wouldn't buy either product as a primary source to surf the web - our family has about every type of computer product known to man, and we all agree that small screens (less than 12 inches and preferably larger) are not at all good for internet use unless you're just looking up one small thing on the road or checking into airlines, etc...
Consider an ipod touch if you want portable games or cheap laptop/tablet if you want to use for the internet. The kindle is really ideal for books. The best advice I got when considering mine was to go to a store that sells both (but in your case I would also look at laptops and tablets too) and put her hands on them to see which you prefer. I found both readers at Staples, but others mentioned Best Buy which would probably have it all. For me I instantly knew that I the Kindle was exactly what I could hold in one hand while lying on my bed on my side to read at night - silly but it's my favorite "feature" - that and it does great in the sun. Just had it at the beach for a week and read like crazy. Good Luck!

Well - there are some games on the Kindle. I have Monopoly, Poker, Blackjack and some word games. I hardly ever play them. You need to search for Kindle Active content to see what is available.

I'd again suggest that you wait and see what Amazon announces this month with their tablets. The PP is right in that the eInk readers are not great internet/game devices.

Thanks! I'm not doing a laptop because she doesn't like laptops. She just wants to play a couple games. And the kindle is cheap so that is why I am looking into that. I don't want to spend more than the $150.

Thanks for the link! They have the perfect amount of games for her!

:confused3

The Kindle is an e-book reader. If she primarily wants to play games and use the internet, this is a poor choice. Why not get an iPad, which would be ideal for this use?

Because she will probably only use it an hour a day. She would probably go on the internet once or twice, but when her coworker was playing games on it, she liked the fact that it was little and she could play a couple games on her lunch break. She will read some books on it too....but I'm not investing $500 in an ipad when she is only going to use it about an hour a day.

I think you need to figure out the real use. Kindle, nook, iPad, it sounds like these are all wrong for you.

At this point it sounds like one of these $25 hand held 10 games in one devices will serve you best. But as games have just as high a priority as books, I think the Nook Color is the best choice. Color, touch screen unlike the kindle, movies, internet, music, and significantly cheaper than an iPad.

I agree that you need to figure out exactly what you want to do with the product. Each of these items has its own strengths, and since they're expensive you want to choose wisely!

I have had the Kindle (2nd generation, which is no longer made) for years and years, and I absolutely love it. If you want to read books, you cannot beat it. Its screen is superior to anything else out there; no glare, no eye strain even after hours of reading. If you want it to read books, the lack of color is not a deterant; after all, most adult books are simply just black and white. I do have a couple games on my Kindle, but they're slow and definitely not first-rate. Finally, the Kindle's price is right.

I also have the Apple iPad. It's good for the internet and games -- good speed, good graphics -- but it's not so good for typing. It's not so good for reading books; the screen has a significant glare, and it weighs maybe three times what the Kindle weighs (and that does add up if you're a lie-on-your-back-reader who holds the thing up for hours at a time). Of course, you can get movies, a calculator, and other niceties. Compared to the Kindle, the battery life is nothing. Compared to the Kindle, the price is high. My kids use my Ipad constantly.

These two things aren't in the same category. If I personally could only have one, it'd be the Kindle. I read every single day, and it suits my purposes perfectly. My Ipad is handy, but it can't do everything my computer can do.
