my son's kindle "woke up" today with no display, no text - just a mess of lines like a TV that is breaking. I plan to exchange but I want to clear personal info for security purposes. Is this something I can do online because the kindle itself won't do anything for me

I don't have a kindle (I have a nook) but can you turn it off and then re-start it?

Did you try resetting it? I had that happen to mine once and I called customer service. They had me stick a pin in a tiny hole and reset it. You might google it.

That sounds like the procedure you used on the Kindle 1 - I bet the OP has a newer version and that is no longer an option. You reset from a button now.

Make sure it is fully charged, then make sure it's off - then slide the power button to the on position and hold for 20 seconds. It should reboot just fine. If it doesn't just call customer service, they can walk you through a few other options.

To disassociate the kindle from you go to your Amazon account, under Your Account, choose Manage your kindle. It will walk you though on "clearing" your information from it so it an be registered to someone else.

Good Luck.

Yep, it was! Thanks!

Call them. (or click the button to have them call you) They will help you with that and get it all worked out for the return.
