does my kindle need to be out going through security or can it stay in my carryon.

I kept mine in my carry-on when I flew with it last week. There were no problems bringing it through.

It was however at the top of the bag just in case I needed to pull it out.

Technically, no. On any given day, however, an individual TSA screener may have different ideas. Just listen to whatever instructions they may be giving and follow along.

I flew with mine last weekend. Did ask TSA on outbound and was told it had to be removed from case. I just put it in the bin for return flight screening also.

This is just personal experience. As advised above, the TSA agent may ask you to remove it. I have gone through TSA with an ipad 12 times and have not removed or asked for it to be removed any of those times. 4 times and the same results for the Kindle Fire. I have not heard of many people being asked to remove tablets.

No one's ever asked me to remove my e-reader or my Ipod from my backpack. Once at DCA they wanted to check through the pack because they thought I had too many electrical cords (all those chargers, you know)

This, exactly.
