Kindle/ds at security

I am asking a question I am pretty sure I know the answer to. we are a family of 4 and one of my per peeves is families who arrive at the security check point totally unprepared. That said, we work hard not to hold the line up.

I will have a Kindle in a case and 2 ds's in our carry on. I assume these need to come out of the bag when we go through security, correct? Also, what about the charger plugs for all 3? Should I bundle them in a ziploc and pull that out too?

I don't want to waste time pulling things out we don't need to, but I also don't want to get there and be pulled aside b/c we neglected to remove the kindle from the bag.

I think the answer is pull it all out but want to be sure.

Thanks!

I have not yet flown with my Kindle, but my boys both had their DS's in their carryons, and they did not have to remove them from the bags. We also had assorted chargers for cell phones and DS's, and we just left them in the bags.

As far as I know, the only items you have to remove from bags are liquids and gels (which have to be in the quart size Ziploc) and laptops.

The Kindle does not need to come out. I can't speak for the DS.

The only thing that has to be removed is a laptop... I have my laptop in a neoprene sleeve and don't have to remove it from that. The DS and kindles do not have to be removed from carry on. Last trip, I had ipods, DS, GPS, etc... and didn't remove any of them..

I take my Kindle DX out and treat it like a laptop, seperate bin. Seems easier than explaining to security what it is; the DX is big like a small netbook.

I do not take out the chargers, sometimes they are actually in a checked bag.

I travel frequently and up until last week had no problem leaving my Kindle in my backpack while going through security. Last week as I was leaving Houston (IAH Airport), I was told by security that the Kindle had to be run through security separately, just like my laptop, and could not stay in a bag or backpack.

DH is a somewhat different case, as he is a product tester for amazon/kindle and carries several. He keeps them in the neoprene sleeves, but pulls them out of his bag. Security in all airports he's been through has been fine with this.

So I figure if he can carry 4 or 5 like this, people will generally be able to carry one without an issue...but again, he does pull them out, just because he likes to be as prepared as possible and have as little time spent with them rescanning his backpack, but also does keep them in the case. (his neoprene cases either foldover or have a plastic zipper)

Thanks everyone for some interesting responses about the new devices coming out now. Just to add that in my experience unless it is specifically required to be taken out (laptop) everything else can stay in the bag. The WORST thing to take with you is a film camera or a camcorder that uses tape. They'll swab these every time, sometimes taking up a bit of time. :)

I have not carried a Kindle but have taken my portable DVD player through security. Sometimes they've asked me to take out and other times it has not been a problem.
I now just put it in the sleeve like they have for a lap top and just put it in the bin. This way I am not scrambling to take it out if security questions me.
Sometimes it's just easier to have the things that may look like a lap top out and placed in a bin

In the past I've had them request to take the Nintendos out so I try to always take them out now. I think it just depends on the airport and the personnel...

The policy about what has to come out is here:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/screening_experience.shtm

For the kindles, a DX could go either way; it might be considered "full size" by most TSA agents, so I might just go ahead and pull that out in advance. A K1, K2, or Nintendo DS shouldn't have to come out because they are "compact". But, sometimes you'll be asked to do so anyway. I generally leave my K2 in my bag, and my kids keep their DSes in their backpacks, and it hasn't been an issue so far.

In January, I had to pull out my Kindle Dx at MCO. At ORD, that was not the case.

Our son's DS was fine in his backpack.
