Kindle cover advice...

My wonderful wife just gave me my birthday present (she couldn't wait the two weeks until my actual birthday), the latest Kindle 3G.

She didn't get me cover for it, waiting until I expressed a preference in that regard. Your recommendations this weekend would be greatly appreciated, especially with regard to whether I need a cover that has a light, or not.

Also... could you please advise me about how to make best use of the web browser capability? Could I post on the DIS using the Kindle?

I got my Nook cover on Ebay...I wasn't crazy about the choices in store and checked Ebay. I got one for $10...I had multiple book lights already so i didn't get one with the book light

But does it need a book light? Or more properly, when does it need a book light? (And secondarily, are there covers with book lights where the light doesn't really do a good job, while for others it does?)

you need a book light only if reading in the dark...I couldn't justify spending $50 on the cover with a book light when I didnt like the cover...so I bought a cheapie cover from Ebay and I had a package of 4 book lights that clip on from Costco that I paid $12 for. works great

It's a lot better quality than I expected for the price. The blue looks a lot better in person; it's more of a royal blue.

I've only had my Kindle for a few weeks; the only time I've needed a book light was the other night when our power was off for 1 1/2 hours. I saw a few inexpensive clip-on lights at Target...I'm going to buy one soon.

Most Kindle owners I know personally have a "notebook" style cover, which makes the Kindle seem more like a book. Those do seem to provide the most protection, but I thought I'd prefer to hold a smaller item in my hand rather than the notebook.

Thus, I have just a DecalGirl sticker on my Kindle (it was not easy to get that sucker on perfectly), and I love that mine isn't plain white. I did have a screen protector, but it had a couple bubbles that I simply couldn't get rid of, and it just bothered me too much.

When I'm not using it, I store mine in a quilted bag 'specially made for Kindles. When I carry it in a tote bag, I always make sure to place it against a clipboard or other hard, flat surface. I am super-careful with mine, and it is 100% scratch-free even after two years of heavy use.

I have a clip-on light, but I rarely use it. It makes a glare-spot on the screen, and it's just easier to use my bedside lamp. When traveling, I take my clip-on light along because sometimes I read in the car while my husband drives and sometimes I don't have a lamp by the bed. My light is not Kindle-specific. Santa put it in my stocking, and I'm fairly sure it came from either Walmart or the book store.

I went more for protection rather than style. Simple black Patagonia padded cover. $10.00. It's been on my kindle for close to three years.

I have several Kindles and an iPad, and I have purchased the covers by M Edge for all but one of them. I have the newest Kindle and I bought the Amazon lighted cover for it.

I love the M Edge product - really well made and nice soft leather. It has a strap that holds the cover closed and the Kindle or iPad is very secure inside. And yes, it does make it seem more like a book to have something to open and treat as a cover. I have bought them in red, blue and green, but I think they have a couple of more masculine choices like brown and black.

I also like the Amazon product very much. For those few times I read in bed it does the job very nicely. The light is better in the upper right hand corner because that's where the light is, but it illuminates the bottom left hand corner well enough to see to read easily.

I just don't like the clip on lights very well. They always seem to get in my way or increase the weight I have to hold up.

The Kindle I got is "third generation" right? So I take it that the second generation covers won't work perfectly right?

I have the lighted cover for the Kindle 3 and wouldn't want to live without it.


For my Kindle 2 I have one of the Oberon covers and it is beautiful. The clip-on lights just don't compare though.

Right. There is a slight size difference (the K3 is a tad smaller) so I would not want to take the chance on a K2 cover holding it as securely. I'm sure it would work as a protection for the screen but my concern would be holding it tightly so it didn't slip out of the cover and hit the floor.

I have both an Oberon and a Noreve cover for my Kindle2. They were spendie but worth every penny IMO.

I love my Oberon cover. I like it so much that I haven't upgraded to a K3 because my cover isn't offered anymore. I know there's cheaper options out there, but I've never regretted the purchase. I rarely use a booklight so for me, having an integrated light in the case wasn't a selling point. DH has an m-edge, but he prefers a snap on type (kind of like a phone cover/case) and is currently going coverless.

Don't have a kindle, but do have a Nook and my cover is an Oberon. Absolutely the best cover going. My kids knocked my nook on the floor and it hit on the edge. Not a ding, scratch, crack, or other problem. Absolutely amazing. And it's beautiful. I get more comments on it.

The Oberon covers are beautiful, but you have to appreciate the tooled-leather look, and not everyone does. Also, they are heavier and add a little weight to the Kindle. And they are expensive, compared to the M Edge and Amazon covers.

I have the amazon light case (not a surprise that I have it, as hubby works for the department), and it's very useful IF you are reading in the dark. I read it in bed, instead of having the bedside light on. It's BRIGHT! Very helpful. Also rather heavy, since the power, hmm, capacitor is the word hubby just gave me... is in the cover (there are connections that hook into the side of the kindle that both keep the kindle in the cover and give the, er, thing in the cover the ability to run the light. Sorry for the clunky wording there.

I'm not sure you would *want* to try to do anything like post to a message board on the Kindle, though.
