I was wanting some advice. We are looking at a 12ft box 1980 tent trailer that has a canvas that is in awesome shape, the wood were the canvas meets the top needs some repair/replacing/tlc. We could get the trailer for $700 cash. Everything else is in great working order. My question is would this be an easy fix or will we just be wasting our money?Has any one had this happen and repaired the trailer..oh yeah it is a starcraft. Thanks Kathy I should mention that is in the inside. The lady that is selling says that her friend had the same thing happen and fixed it but just want others opinions! Thanks

I would suggest signing up for one of the Pop Up specific Internet Message Boards.

My two favorites are Pop Up Times and Pop Up Explorer. There are lots of folks with experience in modification and repair.

But, before you get involved in this type of repair you need to be honest with yourself as to your abilities. Additionally, you need a place to work as roof repairs tend to require the removal of the roof, so workspace is a must.

I have a circa 1985 (we think) starcraft pop-up. I actually bought it with 2 of my buddies to use as a base camp when we go deer hunting. The trailer is heavy duty & very durable. Because of this, for a pop-up, it is extremely heavy. I would suggest you look at your tow vehicle closely. I tow it with a Dodge Durango (Hemi w/3.92 gearing & a Reese hitch). I feel the trailer back there. Actually towed it for a while with a dually. Felt it then too.......

Regarding the repair, Tim5055 is steering you right. This is definitely the way you want to approach the repair. My way generally involves a bucket of self sealing roof epoxy, a broom & beer. The results reflect this volatile mix too.

We have a Ford Explorer and a Ford Escape. So this is what we would be towing it with. We are going to take a look anyways and see if it is worth buying. Thanks Kathy:cutie:

As I recall, we weighed our '85 Starcraft once & it came to around 3900lb fully loaded (which is a bit heavy for a pop-up IMHO).

Ford Explorer should be ok (even better if it has the V8). Not sure about the Escape though.

RV.net is a message board that has good info on towing. Fair warning, they have quite pronounced views on tow weights/capacity (frankly similar to some of the golf cart/mug sharing type threads).

Some of the hyperbole does make for interesting reading though..... popcorn::

We bought a different one then the one I was originally talking about. DH said the other trailer was "sponge bob" compared to the "thomas the tank" we bought.:lmao: Sponge bob had sponges in the corner and the wood was as soft as:scared1: . "Thomas" is like a scene outta Alice and Wonderland in the inside:hippie: . but we love that it  is sturdy has tons of storage and newer canvas that is made out of marine grade canvas! Thanks for everyone's advice! I posted a link if anyone wants to check it out! DH said I can even Disney "ize" it:idea: !:thumbsup2 :cool1:
