Kind of worried my husband lost his job yesterday.

Sorry to disappoint, not much sends me "over the edge". ;)

Your lifestyle is your choice. You're right, I shouldn't have lumped EI in with social assistance. But I believe my mum's greater point about fiscal responsibility still stands.

American unemployment benefits aren't the same as our EI because the employees don't pay a mandatory premium through payroll deductions like we do. While not exactly "social assistance", it's not strictly a user-funded insurance program like ours either.

We have the free dinning plan

Free dining isn't free. You are paying a higher rate for your hotel room. You'd be better off getting a room only discount and having breakfast in the room, and packing sandwiches for lunch and dinner. And I think free dining has been released for September, not October.

We have a pin code so we did get free dinning in Oct

Well, that would explain the confusion then. My mum's American. :goodvibes

I was in a somewhat slightly similar situation a few years ago.

I was laid off within my 45 days window to cancel. I couldn't cancel if I wanted to without losing the money. I could have probably arranged something to defer and apply it to a future trip but...

I knew I'd be back to work, the question was how long and how longer before I'd actually see income.

As it stood, I figured going was a good idea, since I was off anyway, lol.

We had a great trip, possibly our best one. It was odd eating like kings and queens for that week we were there since we had the DDxP.

Realistically how long will your husband be off? Is your trip actually paid for or it is on a credit card? Is there debt you could be paying instead to easy the down time?

In any case, the line of work I do and when I would actually see income from it (being independent again) took many, many months. Actually 7 months before I saw anything resembling a regular check but we were back at Disney within 17 months of that trip.

When a window closes a door opens and I'm glad to be working for myself again.

Hopefully your husband can arise from this in an even better position than before.

Good luck to you OP.

Yes it is. We pay 6.5% (varies by state) into an unemployment trust. It is basically self funded and only lasts a certain amount of weeks.

Employers pay it which is why they so often try to dispute so many claims... It can raise their rates.

I don't think that's even possible here...EI payouts have nothing to do with the employer.

I don't know where you are but what I am saying is the premiums are paid by the employers... They do not make the payouts direct to the unemployed but rather pay their insurance premiums. When a person loses a job they file for unemployment through a separate office.

I was talking about an employer being able to interfere with an employee's ability to collect EI (employment insurance in Canada). We (employees) pay premiums for this coverage sort of like auto insurance. We collect when we've been terminated (according to certain rules) just like you'd make a claim for loss after a car accident. An employer can't "dispute" an EI claim, nor would they have any reason to.

Ok got it.

Didn't realize we were talking Canada.

OP, I suggest you do this:

Give your husband a big hug and tell him you cancelled the trip. Do it without telling him, and tell him it's just Disney, of course you don't want to go. You'll go next year when he's back on his feet.

Don't make it seem like a sacrifice at all or that you regret it at all. It's just Disney, and will be there when you're ready, with better and cooler stuff to see.

He's feeling very bad and that he's let you down. Please don't make him feel that way. if you're disappointed, don't let him know. Just say if he argues "don't be silly, sweetie. It's just Disney."

He'll appreciate more than he'll ever be able to say. And you know what? It's just Disney.

Just please do not utilize any form of public assistance after your trip if you cannot find jobs.

:(

She's said she's going to wait and see. Yeah, I would cancel it, but she's not me. Only the OP knows her circumstances-- why are some people being so ugly about it?

I'm a SAHM, and my DH has a good job he's been at for many years, but in this economy, any of us could be in this situation tomorrow. Be nice!

I don't mean to be snarly but as a hiring person I've heard so many excuses from applicants.
Why not simply wait until after the vacation to job hunt?

I had been volunteering for a local company and wasn't looking for a job, but was offered one about a month before I was to head out of state for post-bachelor's classes. I was already registered, plane tickets already bought, etc. I told my prospective employer this when he approached me about the job, and he had no problems letting me go for that time.

He got a temporary person to fill in during the time I was away, and i started as soon as i returned. It wasn't a big deal :confused3

Because the OP lied before about having a child with cancer and asking for donations.

And she always started bogus threads on Cruise Critic until a fellow DISer called her out on Cruise Critic regarding her bogus posts on DIS and her requests for donations for a child who wasn't ill.
For her kids' sake, if she does have kids, I hope they make it to WDW someday.
