Kind of a shallow Olympic comment

Is anyone else amazed at the eye makeup on the American gymnasts? Especially that Terin Humphrey - I wonder if she can see everything. She's adorable but lose the makeup, honey.

I hear ya! And what is the deal w/all the body glitter? I can only imagine how much glitter is all over the mats, etc. ICK!

Lots of glitter on the eyes and in the hair for sure.

Go to a local dance recital and you'll see plenty of girls, even the tiny tots, with lots of makeup on. In that case it helps define the features in the strong stage lighting.

The glitter really gets distracting. I wonder if the judges notice or deduct points for it.

I like it. :)

I think Carly Patterson looks really pretty. :)
(And the rest of the girls also.)

Back when I was a competitive gymnast, we were not allowed to wear makeup to competitions. I think the girls look horrible with all that black eye makeup on. Yuck, especially Terin. I'm sure she's a pretty girl, but she looks just AWFUL with that black eyeliner, like she's on drugs.

The glitter doesn't bug me so much.

I like that they put on a little make up and the glitters cute. They work so hard and sacrifice so much, I think it's great that they get to express themselves in a fun way.

My daughter and her team mates wear the glitter in their hair, it's very normal. They all do it.

I think the glitter is cute too. I just think that the eyeliner and shadow are a bit too severe. It's just not what you'd expect for an athlete - I was wondering if the makeup was getting in their eyes during the competition.

This may sound silly, but do gymnastic judges look at facial expressions? The makeup may look over the top to us because we're seeing it in closeup on the tv. To the judges and spectators though, it might look perfect and their faces don't get washed out. I think it would be similar for anyone in dancing, figure skating or stage acting. Just a thought.

I know I wouldn't want to be sweating and getting mascara in my eye. I remember when they couldn't wear any make-up at all.

They definitely get judged on smiling on floor.

I get kind of concerned over the glitter. Some of it looks like the pieces are quite large. That's bad stuff if it gets into your eye.

Maybe they're all members of the Alice Cooper Fan Club. :teeth:

I was was thinking the same thing about the eye makeup last night as I watched the competetion. I thought Terin's eyeliner was too heavy, and was surprised that the gymnasts were permitted to wear all that glitter when they compete. I noticed glitter on the girls from China and Romania as well, only not as heavily applied as on the USA's team.

Good point Tammi. Maybe it does only look harsh to us as we see it close up on our tv screen. To the judges and spectators in attendance, it probably makes their features stand out more.

I think you're right about some makeup highlighting their features - I also agree that Terin's eye makeup looked overdone.

Don't know what all the deductions are at the olympic level - but I know there are deductions for appearance in gymnastics. I've heard of them used more for hair not being tied back or having the wrong color brief show under the leo - but since the judging is so subjective - I guess it could happen for too much makeup/glitter etc.

The coaches at my DD's gym banned ALL glitter - both hair and body at all competitions starting last year.
Some of the girls got really carried away with it and they decided it was easier to just say none allowed than try to come up with some sort of rule about what and how much was tasteful.
I have to say that our gym is definitely the exception rather than the rule re: the glitter issue though.

Lots of sparkles at every meet I've ever been to!

I thought the glitter was cute, the eye makeup overdone.

I was so impressed with the competition last night. I'm not one to really watch gymnastics, this is the first year I can remember paying much attention to it -- but dang, these girls are competitors, aren't they? I especially like the uneven bars, although it makes me sooooo nervous to watch.

I had been wanting to post about Terin's eye make-up, especially the black eyeliner. WAY too much and very detracting. Makes her eyes look like they are popping out! I was hoping a mom or coach would talk to her.

I don't think their make-up is overdone. It's like being on stage--it needs to be overdone.

re: Tarin's make-up. MY DD and I have noticed that she has a large birthmark/scar/burn/something around her left eye and we've wondered if she really overdoes the eye make-up to cover up or distract from that.

I had to do a search but I have to agree. It looks a bit spooky and NOT normal stage makeup.
