It's been a weird case. The girl was 16 and reportedly had alcohol in a large campground party. Apparently a lot of potential witnesses weren't talking to the police for fear that they'd be in trouble for potential underage alcohol or drug use. And she was likely driving when she wasn't allowed to do so without a written exception. Minors aren't allowed to drive between 11 PM and 5 AM unless it's for a valid reason such as an overnight job.

It seems like she probably drove off a boat ramp and into the water. There's supposed to be a press conference by the Sheriff today.

I saw her mom on the news pleading for her return.
Thankful that her mom will get some closure now at least.

A body found in a Northern California reservoir is believed to be that of 16-year-old Kiely Rodni, who went missing weeks ago after attending a large party at a Sierra Nevada campground, authorities said Monday.​

Well yeah. Not only was it a violation of California minor driving requirements, but more than likely she was intoxicated and driving at night in dark conditions. The vehicle clearly went off the pavement at the boat launch.

I've driven in areas like this at night when I was completely sober. It's easy to get lost or disoriented. Honestly - it would have been better if she had just asked if there was a spare sleeping bag and she join the group overnight before going home.

Never once crossed my mind that this case is suicide and I have been following it for a while. Poor girl probably had too much to drink, got behind the wheel in the dark in an unfamiliar place. Tragedy happened. I don’t think I know one teenager who hasn’t made a bad decision at one time or another. Hate she had to die so young because of hers.

I've been in campgrounds and these types of narrow forest roads. Even in a campground I worried about the possibility that someone might run over my tent at night when disoriented and possibly intoxicated. I'd typically try to move my tent to a location away from the road, although that's no guarantee. At the very least I've had someone run over my campsite marker.

Inexperienced, pitch black with or without alcohol or drugs and it's a disaster waiting to happen.

Sad. The mom has some closure knowing her body was round/recovered.

It is a very sad ending for her family. So many teens worry about getting in trouble if they call their parents for help. I am sure they would much rather she had called for them to pick her up than attempt to drive as she did. My thoughts go out to them.

There are way too many “if only” choices that would have saved her life. I wish it would cause other teens to think twice, but at that age they feel invincible.

I agree with what you're saying in the larger conversation but this and other situations do not need to be labeled as that just because it happened to be a girl who was white. The point is to not solely focus on the missing if they match being the "white american girl" It's not about being blase about finding someone who was missing (and may eventually located dead) because the color of their skin, unless you want to be exactly that which you're championing against.

It's sorta been given more attention right now cars and bodies and ships being recovered with severe droughts going on and while this isn't the case that a drought located it I can understand why it would get picked up just for that reason too.

This case in particular was aided by Adventures with Purpose who dive and do searching. Given that the authorities said they extensively searched the area with sonar, divers and swimmers and yet this grassroots team found the car in 35mins is something to be talked about. The police did say those looking are not always experts which is true but still. That grassroots has according to their website located 23 now since 2019--cold and missing cases.

When someone after dark goes into a body of water my first thought isn't suicide. It's that they got lost or disoriented. It def. can be the case of driving intentional into water but it wouldn't normally be my first thought. Remember all the stories you've heard over the years about GPS? That's what my mind usually goes to.

Looking at google maps I could totally see one wrong turn in the dark and you've gone into a body of water.



It doesn't even have to be a bad decision like it's her fault for ending up in a body of water. It can just be confusion. All of those white lines are basically roads. Very easy to see how it could be a simple but tragic error. Could be something else of course.

These cases making the news can be used by parents to spark conversations. I don't think it is bad for kids and teens to see the bad consequences that happen with drinking and driving play out in real life instead of just theoretical skits that are done before prom weekend.

I've seen similar cases of missing girls becoming really big in the news and they weren't always the blonde haired white girl.

But I think a lot of the pub of this was just the combination of the party with underage drinking and drug use, and the possibility of an abduction. Plus the issue where nobody really wanted to talk for fear of getting in trouble for that underage drinking and drug use. There's a lot of interest with anyone who may have been abducted whether they're white, Hispanic (which may include white), Asian, black, or any other race or ethnicity.

I posted this because I thought it was pretty good object lesson in being careful.

Teens are largely not okay right now. The fact that she left ALONE from a party where there was alcohol and drug use is a huge red flag for that. Well adjusted teens tend to stick together and travel in groups/look out for each other. Unless there is some new evidence to prove otherwise, it's still very much a possibility.
