Today one of the 3rd graders came in w/acrylic nails. Looong acrylic nails. I'd guess 3/4 inch from cuticle to end of nail. Her sister is graduating from 8th grade in 2 weeks and as a graduation gift, her mom took both girls to the nail salon for a full set of acrylic nails. They were HOT pink w/a white French manicure tip. Needless to say, the nails were v. long for a child and I was v. surprised to see a 3rd grader w/nails like that!

Now, artificial nails and nail polish (other than clear) are not allowed in the school (Catholic school) per the student handbook. and I know that the principal called the mother.

Is this something new? Is this what 3rd graders are doing now? Am I the only one who finds this odd?

No, you are not the only one who finds it odd. I can't think if any reason why a third grader should have acrylic nails. Is the mom going to take her every two weeks to have them filled? ;)

I wonder what the mother's response was when the principal called her. :scratchin

weird. you know those things are really bad for the natural nails.

I'm kind of boggled as to how the 3rd grader got in on the 8th grader's graduation gift.
But yeah, weird.

very weird for a 3rd grader, but its also weird for an 8th grader. I have an 8th grade son, but my sister has an 8th grade daughter. For their semi-formal, graduating from middle school dance, my sister let her go get a manicure with a bunch of friends. Every girl but by niece, got tips. And boy was she peeved that her mother didn't let her do it to.

MY SIL got married last year, and my 7 year old got tips put on...I had my nails done, and she was a junior bridesmaid, but I would never allow the full nail. It was actually nice..Just clear white.

Funny thing is they all fell off before the pictures were over..They lasted through Church and that is all.:rotfl2:

I've seen girls in middle school with them done, but never an ELEMENTARY age girl!:scared1: I will admit i've taken my little sister to have a mani pedi before but that's it!

Yes, that's weird. However it's not as weird as the 8th grade graduation gift that several of my students got this year. Tattoos! On 8th graders! I've had a few with tattoos before but this year parents proudly wrote notes stating that their child was absent from school because he/she was getting a graduation tattoo. When I finish recovering from the promotion today I'll post about it. It was truely the oddest promotion that I've ever been to.

DD9 went to a birthday party a couple of weeks ago that was at a nail salon. They were all very excited to get their finger nails painted. The Birthday Girl got a real rhinestone on one of her nails. I have never seen or heard of any of the girls getting fake nails though. So not age appropriate.

Now the tattoo thing in 8th grade is freaky.:confused3

ok ridiculous and maybe even slightly dangerous for a kid of that age cause they still like to wrestle with their friends and such. Plus it might make writing and stuff hard. I'd take my young dd to get a manicure as a treat occasionally, esp. to a beauty school.

Aside from the health issues (MMA, hazardous fumes) a child that age does not belong getting fake LONG nails. I would think they could poke their eye out! Said in my best mothers voice. Seems ridiculous to me.

I would say getting a mani would be alright, but long fake nails?
heck, i'm 26 and i don't even get those things put on....i'd hurt myself! :lmao:

You have got to be kidding me???? Seriously? Real tattoos?? As in permanent??? No freakin' way!!!!1111

My DD(7) goes and gets pedicures with me before vacation, that's about it.
I do paint her nails, but never would I have her get fake nails at this age.

The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at WDW has one package where you get a set of fake nails and I thought, even though I am overboard with the hair and the makeup and the dress up, I am still not going there, so we got the lesser package that doesn't include nails.

At least the nails at BBB are the press-on type (from what I understand). I would bet that those babies fall off and/or get lost minutes after they leave the BBB! Press-on nails are one thing to "play" with ... but acrylics are a whole different ballgame!

As for the 8th graders, the big thing after graduation is piercings (primarily nose or eyebrow. There is one girl, in particular, whose mother told me she's taking her to get her nose pierced. I haven't heard of any tattoos but it wouldn't surprise me ... esp. in the section of the city my school's located in!

And, how 3rd grader horned in on 8th graders grad gift -- I'm going to guess it prob. had something to do w/it being a First Communion gift. I would guess that the mother knew v. well that the school would prob. not let her make her First Communion if she came w/the nails. I'll see if I can get more info. on Mon.!

ETA -- I think it's fine for kids to get manis and pedis done to their natural nails!

These stories are just sad to me. Why can't we just let kids be kids? They grow up too fast already, without having to get acrylic nails at age 7 or 8 and tattoos at the age of 12 or 13. These are the same kids whose parents are going to wonder why they come home pregnant at 14.

I am the mother of a child in grade three. I can not imagine letting them get acrylic nails done. (Never mind a tattoo-although I have a bucket full of the temporary ones)
