My son will turn 10 while we are at Universal. Should I get the child's ticket or will I have to purchase an adult ticket. Do I need proof of age? Do they check this? Thanks in advance

Technically you should upgrade to the adult ticket when he turns 10. Realistically, they may not ask. If they do ask, just go to Guest services and explain the situation.
