Kid's Portions in Adult Menus

We have been paying for adult DDP for my son since he was 6 because he doesn't like anything on the kid's menu. Both my kids do not like chicken nuggets or hot dogs etc.

In terms of Table Service restaurants, I was wondering if anyone thinks it would be a good idea for them to offer kid's portion of adult meals. That way, the kids can choose what they want and not be stuck with the limited option in the Kid's meal menus.

Now I understand that a lot of the kids are fine with the present menu. So that should still remain. However, for those of us that are not, I was wondering if they could add another option for children. For instance, if you want the option of ordering these Kid's Portions from the Adult Menu, you would pay a little more, say $15.99/child. I would be all for that. :thumbsup2 :) I would get that for my 3 year old as well.:thumbsup2

What do you think?

Sounds like a good idea but too many adults would like to pay lower prices in exchange for smaller portions and Disney doesn't want servers to be in a position to enforce the age restrictions.

The best solution is buffets. Also check the menus. Some restaurants have at least one adult type item on the kids menu. You can also ask your server. It's possible some restaurants may be able/willing to provide what you're asking for, even if it's not on the menu.

Personally, I don't think it is a good idea at all. Currently there are kids menus geared toward what they have been told that the majority of kids want, and there are adult menus to appeal to the majority of adults. To create a 3rd category would add confusion, overhead and expense to the system for a very small minority of folks. There is always someone who won't fit into the current system, but they are not the majority.

To be honest, I have always checked the menu. I didn't really want to pay that much for my 6 year old. But, as you mentioned, we have been doing a lot of buffets. But some of our favourite restaurants are not buffets and so we decided on getting the adult DDP for him. It worked out fine for us until my daughter turned 3. They used to share the Adult meal together and it was fine, not too much. Now I have a choice of whether I should get an Adult DDP for my 3 year old.

We had been asked a few times to show our card to verify that my son can order off the adult menu, but not always. However, I think now if I do decide to get it for my 3 year old, every place would be asking for our card. I guess not a lot of people do this. I was once told by a waiter that my son will love the kid's menu and he should just order from it:confused3 , have no idea why he said that. But my son looked it over and said, "no thank you, I'll take the salmon...", my son was almost 7 at the time. I found it hilarious. The waiter was quite shocked and smiled and gave him a sticker.;)

You may want to stick with the child's plan for your 3 year old and then split up the adult meal from your son's for your 3 year old.

I know that I found the portions filling and large when I went, I would guess that one adult plate would be enough for your son and daughter.

I am thinking of doing that. And for the extra credits (when they share and it's not a buffet), I was just going to use them as CS meals. Believe it or not, I have been researching all the CS places we can go that my daughter would like and I have found that we would need to stick to mainly places without a kid's menu.

You're correct. We are not the majority. So I am also considering not being on DDP.

I do believe that it may be more work. But, I'm hoping that it wouldn't be so confusing. I do believe that some adults would appreciate a smaller portion. And maybe many would order that. But there are restaurants that offer two portions out there. And there doesn't seem to be any confusion when my husband orders the large portion and I order the small one.

I guess it was just a thought. Oh well.

DS8 finds it pretty appalling that they don't sell shrimp, mahi mahi etc... on all the kids menus so I know where you are coming from. And, while I love the idea of child portions of the adult food, it could definitely get confusing. For this reason, we do seem to end up doing a lot of buffets. CP was a big hit with DS8 as he stuffed himself full of seafood. All that said, most of the places do offer a fish as an option on the kids menus. So, it is possible to get around the more boring food. Also, we always let the little ones try some of our more interesting food. I don't know if the dining plan would be best for you though. I would definitely price it out. A bit of a hassle, but a big help.

The actual cost of the food is a very small portion of what your bill is.

The bulk of the cost is labor, and the cost of maintaining the structure, and the intial cost of building the structure.

So reducing the portion size for children would do very little to reduce the cost for Disney to provide that meal.

It is common place to charge a "kids" price in an attempt to get families to eat out, who might not if their wasn't special pricing for children.

They have fish and mahi mahi at quite a few TS restaurants. I have the children's menus for TS and CS in a word document if you want me to send them to you - just pop me a PM.

I researched the menus before making ADRs for my DGDs. I tried to find as many as I could that had more than diced chicken, hot dogs, carrots and celery. Okay, I may be exaggerating a little.....but not much. My kids (and now my grandkids) eat real food. The menus used to be much better than they are now.

Thanks for the PM's - darn the bad luck that the menu is too long to PM!

LOL!! Tricia, how long have you had these menus? You could have saved me loads of research!:rotfl:

Sorry sweetie! I confess I have the CS ones too, will that help you now at this late date?:goodvibes

My son did order the Mahi Mahi at Coral Reef. But there are not a lot of restaurants that offer such things. My son loved the Princess Storybook Dining because he ate so much smoked salmon and shrimp. He loved it. My 3 year old daughter did the same thing. She loves smoked salmon and shrimp. As a matter of fact that was the best appetizer we've had.

We too try to stay with Buffets, but there are favourites like Le Cellier. However, we did notice the steak as part of the child's menu so that's what we ordered for my 3 year old. I suppose my son would have been fine with that also.

So, I will go over the menus again and hopefully, we can get away with just buffets, Coral reef (child's mahi mahi) and Le Cellier (child's steak). And maybe we don't have to get my 8 year old son the adult meal this time. I have already checked out all the CS places with no child's menu. We may be able to get away with it. I'll have to see.;)

Wow Tricia! Thanks.

My son had the spaghetti at Tony's, he did not like it. He said it did not have meat on it and just sauce (when we make the sauce we usually add meat, onion, mushrooms and red peppers) and he really did not eat any of it. Oh well.

I am looking at the CSs now to see if we can get away with getting my son (8)and daughter (3) the child's DDP. We're looking for any CS places that do not offer a child's menu.

Well unfortunately those without a kids menu tend to be things like Casey's Hot Dogs and Pizza Planet, certainly no adult excitement there.

However, you may be pleasantly surprised with some of the other CS's that offer grilled chicken salads, Turkey Roll Ups, Grilled chicken with cheese, sweet and sour chicken, Ham Roll Ups, Sup Sandwiches, etc. I just have these for the parks themselves, only because I figured CS would either be in a persons home resort or the parks.

Thanks Tricia.

I was able to go over these menus recently. And we will probably try to go to Flame Tree for the baked chicken wings. We have completely given up on Backlot Express and the ABC Commissary.

We do actually like the Pizza Planet. I like the all veggie pizza. And my two kids love the salads. They like the Italian dressing on it and it's gone in two seconds. We usually order my son the pepperoni pizza and he's fine with that. Although, he doesn't finish it. My daughter loves the veggie pizza too. She can outeat us on salad and veggie pizza. :lmao: :confused3 (and she's only 3). So that's why that's one of our favourites.

We went to Sunshine seasons quite often and we order the sweet and sour chicken for my daughter, she loved it. But at this point, I was glad we had the adult DDP for my son, he loved the salmon which is only available as an adult meal.

We also like Columbia House, but then again was glad we got the adult DDP for my son since he would not have eaten any of the ones in the kid's menu. We tried the Grilled chicken for my daughter and we ended up throwing it out. No one wanted it. But she did share my son's meal.

Cosmic rays is the only place we get the chicken nuggets for my daughter. She doesn't mind it once but doesn't seem to want it anytime again.

And occasionally my daughter will try the mac and cheese. But she won't eat it all. I usually give her my salad to finish. I know, I know...she's 3 and she'd rather have garden salad than mac and cheese. I think it's because we don't really give them things like that at home.

But I think it will work out okay. We'll try getting my daughter the kid's DDP and for TS do mostly buffets. I'm sure we'll be okay.

Thanks everyone.:)
