Hi everyone,

This may sound like a daft question but after all I am Daftman, but could anybody tell me if there is an alternative to Calpol in the US,its just that DS who is 21m is going through truck loads at the moment and I dont fancy being stopped for calpol trafficking at MCO:D

Seriously though any help would be appreciated just to save taking a case full of the stuff to last us 3 weeks.

Thanks

Sean. :smooth:

Sean the equivalent is Tylenol syrup ...... but...... it doesn't taste very good and small children prefer what they are used to so I would suggest taking Calpol!

I hope you don't mind me asking, but why is your son needing so much paracetamol?

DD Katie had to visit Doctors over there last year due to very high fever - and was recommended Children's Motrin. It's just like Calpol (ie thick and gloppy!) and VERY good. Comes in lovely Bubble Gum, Grape and Blackcurrant (or something like that) flavours.

There's loads of choice, don't worry about taking anything other than prescription medicines:D

You can go to any of the 24 hour pharmacies and they will have someone there who can recommend something suitable if you tell them you want a flavoured paracetomal suspension.
I can sympathise with your need because for years my kids seemed to get through gallons of it. You also don't want one of the bottles breaking in your luggage - I have been there and it is not nice! You can get sachets now which are probably better for travelling.

I am convinced that I read somewhere that it was prohibited to take paracetamol into USA. Just to be on the safe side we took junior neurofen (ibruprofen based) when we went.

Thanks all of you,

Shirley,
DS has been teething for 18m and is still waiting for his last 4 teeth,he gets a temperature from this and as you can guess very aggravated, calpol does tend too do the trick in settling him however we do only try and give it as a last resort but we seem to have a few last resorts.

Libby,
Thanks for the reply I will have to check this out or maybe someone else has experience on this matter.

Regards

Sean. :smooth:

You know Dimplenose I've got a feeling you're right about this particular medicine. Our Food & Drug Administration is very strict, a lot of what is available over the counter in Europe has to be prescribed by a Doc over here. They say it's for our safety, but I think it's to up the drug companies profits. I'm a little cynical on this topic.

You can buy calpol, in handy sachet form, we always take these, no problems with breaking bottles, they each have a 5ml dose in each sachet so no measuring needed, weve always taken them and never been stopped at the airport, i put all my medication items in a tupperware container and have it in my hand luggage.

you can get childrens tylenol which is excellent - I used to bring it back with me as it is so good.

Be aware however - that it is VERY strong - much stronger than anything we can buy over the counter, and it comes with a dropper rather than a spoon. The strength is such that they literally need 1 or 2 drops of it - DO NOT GIVE A SPOONFUL.

We found when dd was small, that 1 drop of tylenol was easier to administer than a spoonful of Calpol.

Olaf - I would have said the exact opposite - you can buy a lot of medicines off the shelf in Walgreens etc, and we have to ask for most things over the counter - but then things always seem 'strange' when you are in another country, so it's probably just that we have different rules rather than that one place is stricter than the other.

Thanks Jules and Bev,

I have spoken too Virgin who have confirmed that it is ok to take calpol into US and that it should be packed in hand luggage.

Thanks too all

Sean.

Bev, I was going on what we were able to buy over the counter while living in Germany. That stuff was much stronger than what's available over here. I guess I just assumed it was the same in the UK. There has been a move afoot in the last few years of getting more drugs available over the counter.

I really don't like children's Tylenol that much. I've found that children's Motrin works much better at bringing down a fever, and it comes in bubblegum flavor (big hit with DS).
