Can anyone recommend a sewing machine to a novice? I am looking to start sewing but do not have a machine. I don't want to spend a fortune but I also don't want to buy a cheap piece of junk. Any advice? Thanks.

I think they're are a lot of good basic machines out there, and you really don't NEED all the fancy stitches. One thing I do recommend is a machine that will do a button hole. My buttonhole stitch is a lifesaver. I have an Elna. I've had it for over 5 years now, and I do love it; but I don't recommend it for someone starting out. It does embroidery and has a couple of built-in fonts, etc. Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

This is too funny! I finished sewing a ruffle on a dress just like this today! I had started messing with it a while back before I went to the mall to get some jeans to make them for a fellow disser and thought let me just sew the ruffle and finish it up! It looks so similar! I'll have to post a picture of it later. I am downstairs and it is upstairs of course!

I won a Mike and Sulley polymer beads tonight! I am so excited. DH doesn't think DS should wear a necklace but too darn bad! Now I am just hoping that his Monsters outfit will still fit him this year. I know the sleeves and pants will be short, we'll just have to see how bad it looks! If not, guess back to the sewing machine!

Cool. Great minds and all that, huh? :rotfl: I can't wait to see a pic. Congratulations on the beads. I don't have boys, but I must say I am surprised at the amount of boy jewelry I've seen. I'm also surprised that I like it as much as I do. I guess I just never thought about it, but why shouldn't the boys get to join in on the fun?

About the Jo Jo outfit.... I dunno.... I definitely see what the designer was doing. She was going with brighter, more circus-like colors. Many of you have mentioned the detail is lacking, and I don't see that at all. Both outfits, style-wise, are very simple. The NBC outfit has 2 main fabrics and 1 trim fabric and 2 fairly simple appliques. The Jo Jo outfit has quite a few more fabrics and 3 more complex (more than 1 or 2 pieces put together) appliques. (I'm not even talking about the tee.) Also, the NBC dress has more of a patchwork random feel to it. The Jo Jo dress has more of a quilted look (but w/o the batting) to it. The squares all seem to be lined up quite precisely, so I don't think it is a lack of detail. It is more a lack of flare. The NBC outfit has flare because of the polka dots and the color combination and that makes it very trendy and very "now." The Jo Jo outfit doesn't have that trendiness - neither in colors or patterns on the fabric. It looks like a bright Holly Hobby to me. I do like the Jo Jo outfit though, but I would've done some things differently. I would've put the applique on the tee on the dress and put the tent on the leg.

I'm sorry you're dissappointed though Tink. FWIW, I think it looks better on, and I think your dd looks adorable wearing it.

Maybe that's it! I was expecting prints to look like a circus...you know stripes, dots, etc. I *should* have told her more what I was looking for instead of just telling her the style, etc. I was hoping to get a Jojo outfit that I liked without spending as much as I did on the other customs. So, I guess I'm as much or more to blame than the seller since I didn't specifically say what kind of prints to use. I would have thought they would be more primary colors (brights) since that is how Jojo is on the show. So, yes, I should cut her more slack. I do like the NBC set and the Jojo isn't that bad it just won't work for me.

Do any of you want it?! ;)

I guess I am the only one who thinks the JoJo outfit is actually cuter than this one?!?!?!?!?! They are both cute though, I am probably just a bigger JoJo fan since I've never even seen NBC. As far as the quality of the fabric though, I would say they are the same. The fabric in the NBC outfit can be bought fairly inexpensively at Wal-mart. I didn't look too closely at the JoJo fabric, but I doubt is is any less quality than the dots in the NBC.

Anyway....... I hope you find something that you like!

Nope, you aren't the only one! I have never seen NBC either (and plan on never seing it).

Like someone else said, she seemed to be going for a circus feel, with all the different colors.

Tink, I'm glad you posted pictures. Don't feel bad about that! It's not what you had in mind, and I feel really bad for you. But, I can also feel for your seller.

Let us know how this all works out. I hope you come up with something you are both happy with. (or at least you can both live with!)

I can see where that would have looked better, and now that you say that, i can see why this really wasn't what you were picturing at all.

Re: sewing machines

I used a 1967 edition Sears for 13 years...it was a hand me down from my aunt. Then my button-holer broke and I bought a $200 Brother at Wal-mart. I really love it. That would be my recommendation. There is a cheaper Brother machine there, but I can't remember how much it is.

I hope you find the one you need!

Can someone try to answer a quick question for me, please? I haven't purchased any of my patterns yet, but I found some fabrics I really want and don't know how much I need. Can anyone tell me about how much yardage I would need for the following:

layered twirl skirt

twirl jumper (top only)

I'll be making these in a 12-18 month size.

If no one knows for sure, a good guess would be appreciated :)

How much do you want for it? My dd would love it but don't know if I can talk hubby into it!

Well I'm done wih the dress I think. I may decide to put a Minnie head on it but if no it will still be fine. I'll post pics when I have time. So thats 1 down 3 more to go! Yeah.

Well the outfit I was working on last nite is done. It came out cute with the ruffle on the bottom of the shirt. I also finished the socks on the patriotic one. I was out of red and blue ribbon and I finally got it last nite. Yeesh, trying to get the man to take me to the store is harder then making an outfit.

I plan on reading this thread from start to finish over the next couple of days, but I am curious about one thing.

If you are buying these from a seller from ebay, isn't the disney part trademarked? Maybe I'm nuts, b/c I swear I remember reading somewhere that you can't buy Disney things off ebay b/c of the trademark issue.

Can someone clear this up for me?

Thanks!

LOL!!! I hear you there. I just told him I needed to go to Walmart. He just shook his head and said "ribbon or fabric this time". Oh well...

Kudos to you if you do manage to read the entire thread. That very subject was actually brought up. Someone posted a really neat website from an eBay seller who has won a few legal battles regarding this. Basically the courts have ruled that is Disney (or whomever) is willing to sell something like fabric, the person buying the fabric has the right to do whatever they like with it as long as they do not try to pass an item off as an officially licensed item. I forget the seller's name. It is similar to Toblerone, but that isn't it. That's the chocolate people. :rotfl: In other words, if you sell fabric, you expect people to make clothing, home dec items and accessories out of them. You don't expect them to buy the fabric and put it on a shelf and just look at it. However, I must confess.... that I have a lot of fabric that I do just that with. :lmao:

I too have just bought that pink Mickey fabric from Walmart. It's really cute.
About keeping the kids clean, sadly, my girls have never had a Mickey Ice Cream Bar, they eat food that they can't get on themselves, like french fries, chicken fingers, that sort of thing. Anything messy is closely supervised. My girls make a total mess when they eat, so they are convinced that Disney doesn't have ketchup. LOL :rolleyes1

Except that Disney now puts "Sold for noncommercial home use only." on the edge of the fabrics. That is their answer to the lawsuit verdict. So, technically, you could sell something made with the older fabrics and be ok, but not the new ones.

That's true.

tabberone is the seller who spearheads copyright issues to this day. I see her on the ebay boards a lot. I have known about her for years and I have been on ebay for about 10 years now.

tink, good luck to you. Your little princess is a beauty no matter what she wears. princess:
