I have done both, for bigger characters I perfer the coloring book idea.

This is a before picture, when the pieces aren't sewn together or fused to anything.

This is the after picture, after I did all of the applique stitching. I haven't done the stripes on his socks yet though. Anyway, just remember when you do the coloring book thing, your image might come out facing the other way. I use fusible web as tracing paper, then just flip it over and iron it to the appropriate colored fabric.
Good luck, Lisa

Lisa,
How do you keep your stitch around the applique so nice and neat? I want to try piecing together an applique but I'm afraid it will look messy and distorted. Does it just take practice?

Just thought someone here may know a good website where I can find bulk ribbon (green and pink) to make bows for my daughter's upcoming wedding. You know the large ones to put on the pews.

Thanks a lot

I too was just going to ask what is the easiest way to sew an applique? It seems to be just to go slow and practice. Looks like it takes a lot of time. I was thinking about doing some simple Mickey ones, maybe Monsters, Inc. I am a basic sewer, would I be able to do this myself???

My daughter turns 10 today. Yesterday at Walmart on the clearance rack I found a double ruffle red and white poka dot skort in size 8, fits perfect hopefully will still fit in Oct. Ross stores have a bunch of short sleeved ribbed tops with a lettuce edge and then another contrasting lettuce edge under it. I got a red one with black but saw: white/pink, tan/brown/, pink/white, brown/pink. I'm going to add ribbon and a disney applique. Something different than a plain white T. Butterick pattern 4785 is a simple halter dress just like the Wamart dress.

Oh my gosh! I finally made something. I've been having someone else making all my kids Disney outfits for our trip in September. I saw CastleCreations Walmart dress and thought I"d just shamelessly copy her idea. Hey....imitation is the best form of flattery. LOL! I went to Walmart, found the dress and Ric Rac, then went to Hobby Lobby and got the Disney scrapbook sticker. When I got home I remembered I had this Minnie head. Just glued everything on and it's done. So simple. Thank you CastleCreations for your awesome ideas!

This is what I came up with. I think I'm going to have my daughter wear it with black capri leggings. She's 7 but very tiny. I could only find the dress in a 4T so it'll fit more of a halter top.

Thanks Lisa! Your Spongebob is adorable :).

Ow my goodness! That's so clever. Hmmm....I may even have some of those stickers, :rotfl2:

Thanks![/QUOT
Love it...Can it be washed??Where did you get the stickers?

You can find the stickers in Walmart in their scrapbooking aisle, Rag Shop, Michaels and AC Moore-at least those are the stores by me that carry them. ;)

I'm glad you found the stickers without a problem. They really are cute!
As for the applique job. This is what I do. I find an image, like say the outline of a Mickey head. I buy fusible web that has the paper backing. Then I lay the fusible web down over the image, paper side up. You can see through it, so then I take a pencil and trace the image. I cut the image out, roughly, not on the line, about a quarter of an inch away from the line, on the outside of it. I then fuse it to the fabric that I want to use. Then I cut it out on the line, it's easier to cut it out after you fuse it, to get a perfect shape. Then I iron the cut out, onto whatever I want to use it on. Then I iron on a piece of fusible interfacing on the back of the garment. So if I'm making a minnie tee, I put the fusible interfacing on the inside of the shirt, but making sure I cover the whole applique that's on the front, if that makes any sense. When you sew the applique on, it's nice to have the interfacing behind it. Then I use a low tension, applique stitch. On some machines it's called a satin stitch. If your stitch is adjustable, set it to a pretty low or high setting, whatever it takes to make your stitches right next to each other. Then you can adjust the width of your stitches. I use a thinner stitch to sew little things, like Spongebob's legs, shoes, etc. But like for his eyelashes, I use a wider stitch.
It does take practice, but not too much. The mickey heads are perfect, because they have curves, and these take a little bit of skill.
Good luck with your projects everyone.
I get to spend the day, following around a Labor and Delivery nurse tomorrow, so hopefully I can see a few precious babies being born.

To Camping Griswolds....I loved your summer style princess outfits on page
93. I am using using your idea to make some similar ones for my DD7. Can you tell me what type of material you used for the lining and outer covering of the cape of Snow White? We are going in July when it will be hot and I wonder how your DD found wearing the cape through the day. I'm especailly wondering if it fell forward around her shoulders and if she found that bothersome. Was it removeable, or you used lightwieght fabric and it was fine? Thanks.

You have given so many great tips !! I have never thought of using coloring books..Just wondering do you use wonder under or something else. I have been having problems with it not staying in place after washing. Thanks for any advice.

After I applique I do over any large areas with some descreet stitching. I haven't had any lift up...but it would be my luck..ya know? Let's see, I use, Heat and Bond lite. Maybe it's spelled Heatnbond. But you know what I'm talking about. I have used other brands in the past with good results. Be sure not to wash on a regular cycle. I do applique in hand washing whenever I can. Otherwise, turn the garment inside out and use a gentle cycle. Also, I never stick them in the dryer. Unless, one gets away from me... and it has happened. But they have all survived. LOL.

You'll have to show us when you get done!! Our Walmart has some of those skorts, and I thought about getting some, but haven't yet.

I bought the heat & bond ultra or something like that, it wasn't the lite. Will that matter when it comes to stitching them?
