Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 5

I am near tears fighting with the ruffler foot. I am trying to do these super easy nightgowns that Tom finished in an hour and I have had nothing but trouble. I hand gathered the skirt to the t and the thread was breaking and the shirt kept getting crumpled underneath. It looked so bad but if I tried to rip it out the shirt got holes in it. So I just sewed ric rac on top of it to hide it!

So then I got out the ruffler foot for the bottom ruffle and I am doing something terribly wrong because it is not working. It is a crumpler foot in my case! I am hoping it is because the tension was too high but I am not holding out much hope. The directions (from the YCMT site) say to over ruffle and then spread it out but the thread just broke when I tried that. I am really at my wits end. I am taking the kids for a lunchtime playdate so I am hoping when I get back this afternoon I can get it to work or else the other girls might just get pj pants to match their appliquéd shirts!
Steph.... step away from the machine, and calm down!:goodvibes
When I use my ruffler foot, I always use upholstery thread as the bobbin thread. I doesn't break, (unless you really pull hard), so much easier to either overruffle and then spread it out, just leave extra long thread ends at the start and end of your ruffle. or you can pull the bobbin thread if you under ruffle. Hope this helps! I don't think I could live without my ruffler foot, although, I really need to look for a snap on foot. Getting the screwdriver out and attaching it, and taking it off, and reattaching it is getting to be a pain!;)
So does Zoe. The waist of pants and skirts never stay where they should. I try but they either slip on their own or Zoe pushes them down - I think she believes they're supposed to go under her tummy since that's where they go on their own. LOL I mostly make her dresses with a raised waist or long tops/tunics to be worn with pants. I also try to buy premade tops that are longish to help keep the belly covered. Less full skirts don't seem to be as big a problem, I'm guessing because they don't have the same amount of weight from fabric. They still slip over time. I've considered making her a skirt and then instead of adding a waistband, I'd add it to a simple tank style top over which she could wear a sweater or tee - any kind of top that would look fine untucked. I saw something like that recently at a kid's store. I think it may have been Pumpkin Patch. The dress looked like a pleated plaid skirt with a sweater. I think there was a belt at the waistline but I don't remember for sure.
I am glad that my Leigh isn't the only one who likes to wear her skirts under her "buddha belly". Attaching the skirt to a tank sounds like a great idea. I might have to explore that possibility!

I know this has been asked before, but I don't know where to look for it.

I want a serger, but I don't know how to pick a good one. What would be a good one to get?

I thought my DD was the only one. But she calls hers her "PawPaw Jim" belly. Cause her Great Grandpa has a bit of a beer belly.

I need Ratatouille Help! I just booked Kirsta's Bday party. I usually do this big spread at our church. Last year was Jasmine and I made the kids magic carpets and lots of other stuff. This year we are having the part at the Young Chef's Academy and they'll be making pizza. The kids will be getting chef hats, and I thought we could make some aprons? The site that can't be named, doesn't have fabric. Well they do, but the print is really huge. Just something plain? With an iron on picture? I didn't see the movie, but Kirsta loved it. What is in the movie that can do on the apron? Anyone with some great ideas? Make a girls apron and a boys? Or just go simple and make them all the same?

What about an appliqued chef hat on a plain apron? That would be a pretty simple design.

OK, for today's installment of "I must be smarter than the embroidery machine!" I'm beginning to like it! I did successfully stitch a few things this morning. It has seemed to be a bit tempermental - you have to do things in a very specific order. But once I've gone back and read the instructions a second and third time, and get things in the right order, it seems to wok. All I've done is on scrap, so I don't have anyting to show. But, I can tell that very soon this is going to be fun!

What machine did you get again? I really want one! I think I have said that a few times now!

You know you could show us your scraps! We would be happy with a preview!

Where did you get it? How much?
PM me if you want!
I really would appreciate it!

I know this has been asked before, but I don't know where to look for it.

Heather, I have the Singer UltraLock from Wally World. It has been a great machine for me. It does have a tendancy to "skip" a few stitches, here and there (not that often, but I noticed it)

I think that Nana has mentioned a Brother serger available on Wal-Mart dot com. She highly recommends it. I think that is what I will look into, once my Singer conks out!.

I finally got some pictures of the Beaded Tiaras the girls and I made the other day.

Lyddy was in a ver silly mood last night though!
DSCF2101.jpg

However, she was more interested in watching TV

She had just gotten back from my Mom's house. She left here with wavy hair, and came home with straight hair. Very odd!

My mom always uses and awful bristle brush , to brush my kids hair. it straightenes out there curly hair, It annoys me!

Love the tiara and nightgowns.
did you use a kit for the tiara?
Lori

you know I have found that the serger works as good as the operator! so some have not liked me and others have loved the machines. I like the white or the singer. they are great for the price!

Lori

Stupid question. My DD is 2. I have not yet gotten my new machine yet but when I see a fabric I like how much do I get, if I don't have a pattern yet. I'm going to start off with PJ's first. I also have a DS8 and DS6 how much would I get for them too, just bottoms for the boys. TIA

Laura

I have a DS8 and a DS5. DS is tall. I can get pj pants for them out of 1 1/2 yds unless there is a print that runs the length rather than the width, then I need 2 yds. I just bought a pattern to make them camp style shirts and I needed about 3 1/4 yds to make both shirts.

Here is the Minnie Dot Apron Dress. We leave in 20 days!
th_MinnieDotapron002.jpg

Now all I have to do is "Disney-fy" 6 sweatshirts, imagine up one more princess custom, make a few decorated T's, pack, make sure the inlaws pack, etc.
I will be looking for this! I believe we overlap trips by about 2 days. I have even more to get done than you do :scared1:

1) :snooty:
2) Oh, Megan thought Tessa is beautiful (smart kid). I tried to explain that the fabric was Pooh toile and she was having none of it. That's Belle, silly! she said.
3) No worried about the Minnie dot. Thank you so much!

HeatherSue, We were 22 when we got married, I finished college first before the wedding!:goodvibes My DH insisted I finish school before he married me. So we had a very long engagement!!!

We were also 22 when we got married! I insisted I finish school before I married him :rotfl:

I know this has been asked before, but I don't know where to look for it.

I want a serger, but I don't know how to pick a good one. What would be a good one to get?

I got the Brother Nana recommended from Wal-Mart.com. I believe it was $237 with 97 cent shipping. I LOVE it! I still just do basic serging, haven't ventured beyond that, but I could serge all day. It is fun. Even my sister fell in love with it. It is a little pain to get threaded correctly (I guess they all are) but it comes with a CD I popped into the computer that really helped. As long as I thread it right I have no problems.

   TWO WEEKS TO GO!

Woo hoo! I'm so excited! Okay, here is my (not written in blood) itinerary (with customs planned to keep on topic)

dinner: CS
No customs. Seven years ago I took my beautiful 3 year old princess to Disneyworld and never even thought to buy her a princess dress :confused3 I was SOOOOOOO clueless then! So I've always promised her if we ever go back she can have whatever dress she wants. I am also going to buy DD2 a Cinderella dress. I can't decide if I should get them the night before at DTD or wait and get them at the BBB? I heard on the BBB board that the dresses there are the same, but they steam them so they look nicer. Could I buy dresses at the BBB in DTD the night before? Any advice would help. Thanks!

1/20 Disney Hollywood Studios (but I will probably always call it MGM)
Fantasmic Dinner package at Mama Melrose
No idea what to have the kids wear. All this sewing and nothing to wear :rotfl: I'm hoping to make a Cinderella zuma e-bay CASE for DD2.

1/21 Still not sure, but probably back to MK
5:00 dinner at Ohana
back to MK for PPP
Customs: Red fabric w/black mickey heads camp shirts for DS8 and DS5 and minnie dot outfits for girls. Found white polo shirt w/mickey logo for DH for $5 on Disney shopping. I guess changing clothes after Ohana? for PPP. DD2 will wear Cinderella or Snow White dress, DS5 and DS8 will wear their Halloween Pirate costumes. DH will wear POC football jersey and probably pirate Mickey ears, I will probably wear my Seinfeld "puffy shirt" aka my pirate shirt, but everyone calls it my Seinfeld shirt. DD10 will have a double layer pirate skirt with the tulle in the middle of the layers (the one Tifani made Lily for Christmas) and a "Little Bit Pirate Little Bit Princess" t-shirt. I have everything to make this outfit, but haven't started it yet.

1/22 Epcot
4:40 ADR at Garden Grill
Customs: Planning Nemo for whole family. Made stripwork jumper for DD2, need to applique nemo Mickey head t-shirts for rest of the fam.

1/23 Animal Kingdom
5:20 ADR at Boma
Custom AK outfits for whoever I manage to make them for. Have stuff to make AK Mickey head Ts for the boys.

1/24 Epcot
8:30am ADR at Ahershus
probably park hop somewhere else later in the day
5:30 ADR at Whispering Canyon Cafe
Customs: I'll probably have Lily wear her Cinderella stripwork jumper

1/25 9:00am ADR at Chef Mickeys
probably will have to check out of hotel before breakfast. hopefully we'll have time to run over to MK for a while before running back to POR and catching ME back to the airport. Our flight home leaves around 6pm.

Any tips, recommendations or suggestions would be great! I should probably make me a Mickey head ribbon t or something but don't know if I'll have time. I'm nervous about all this applique I have to do because I haven't figured out how to do it to my liking on my new sewing machine. Anyone who has the Brother 7700 and can give me applique tips (settings, etc.) It would be helpful!

Maybe we'll run into you. We arrive Jan 23 and are staying at All Star Music.
Our tentative plans:
Arrive 1/23 ~3:00pm, stop at grocery store on way to resort from airport.

1/24 Downtown Disney (Dh has a meeting all day and I did not want to take DD to MK without him) and dinner at 1900 Park Faire (6:50pm). I bought a Cinderella gown for DD at Christmas Tree Shop for $13 - couldn't make one for that price.
th_Cinderella010.jpg

1/25 - MK - DD will probably wear the Minnie Dot Apron dress this day.
th_MinnieDotapron002.jpg

1/26 EPCOT - DD will probably wear the Mickey Swirl skirt I made for our last trip in Sept.
th_Customskirts001.jpg

1/27 MK and lunch at Crystal Palace - I need to come up with something for this day.
th_question_mark.jpg

1/28 head for the airport in the AM:sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

about 500 pages ago, someone posted how to watermark a photo. But I'm not sure I want to watermark. I want to hide the face. I came across a cute outfit to show and it's not my kid.

Looks like this is our best chance to cross paths! I will watch for the outfit! We will likely monorail over to MK after Chef Mickeys which is 9am. Not sure yet what kids will be wearing. I'll probably put the boys back in their red fabric/black mickey head shirts if they are cleanish. I have to find things that will work for both Chef Mickey's and the long airplane ride home, since luggage will be gone by then.
I'll post photos so you can spot us when I figure it out!

I'm back!!

We are exhausted but we had a wonderful trip. I have to unpack, find my house, and go through pictures. I took over 800 pictures in WDW, not to mention a couple hundred in California, and 82 photobucket pictures. It may take me a while! I'll post pictures as soon as I can. There is no way I will be able to catch up after three weeks of missed posts. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

I'm so sorry that your ruffler foot is a crumpler foot!! Did you optimize your ruffler? I went through the steps and have come pretty close to getting my ruffles right after that. But, I haven't been able to over-ruffle and then pull the ruffles out, either. The thread just breaks for me, too. I under-ruffle and then cut off the extra.

Um, no I haven't optimized it. :headache: I am too impatient and I am doing flannel and it's already a circle. You see, I have lots of excuses. I will, I promise!

I usually make my ruffler finish a bit longer than I need and then I pull the bobbin thread on the ruffle stitching to adjust the fullness as needed when I pin it to the other piece. The YCMT tutorial seems to use a different type of ruffler than I have because there are a couple differences in how it does things and how mine works. BTW - Mine is a White Brand foot from JoAnns. Someday I want to try a different (aka more expensive) brand because the things the tutorial showed would be cool to be able to do. For now, though, I'm just glad to have a ruffler foot that works. My newer sewing machine just stopped working with the ruffler foot before Christmas. I panicked but was relieved when my old Kenmore will ruffle with it.

I don't know if I have a brand, Heather sent it to me and I threw away the packaging since they had no directions to speak of. I used it once and thought it was so difficult I went back to hand gathering. Ruffling flannel is so hard though!

Steph.... step away from the machine, and calm down!:goodvibes

Thank you so much! I will go buy some upholstery thread tomorrow and see if that works. I was getting so mad at the thread and I bought expensive thread too! I will be so happy when I complete these "one-hour" nightgowns, LOL!

I knew you guys would help. The whole time I was at the play date I was thinking I can't wait to get home and read what I am doing wrong. This board is the best!

Hmm, my quote dropped this and the cute pictures of Lydia! See, when I look at this I think what beautiful kids and pjs and when I look at mine I think what a mess! I guess we are too critical of our own stuff, LOL!

Teresa: Lydia looks so sweet with her nightgown and crown! Fruit Loops are fun, I can see how she would get distracted!

It's White(s?) brand. But, there are a 2 different styles of Whites brand rufflers sold at JoAnn for $14.99. Unfortunately, I got you the one without all the fancy stuff like in the YCMT tutorial. So, just blame your troubles on me! :flower3:

How much was the Brother serger, or don't you know since it was a gift?

We might see you too!!! We arrive on 1/23 and are spending 1/24 at Epcot. I haven't assigned shirts to days yet, but I'll come up with something and let you know. I'll keep a lookout for the jumper! It would be soo cool to have a DIS spotting!
