Sorry I was making such a fuss about this, I am just really a) happy to be done before Saturday and, b) proud because it was hard! The outside was velvet and really hard to iron and the inside was slippery and hard to work with. The whole thing was a pain and I was worried that it would look crappy and I would hate it. And I used a size 5 but lengthened the skirt and sleeves to a size 7. Sorry for rambling!

An outfit this magnificent will NOT get resized by me! This is amazing Steph! I just LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it! As always Megan is such a doll! She looks so much like Lyddy, they could be related! You should be VERY VERY proud of this dress Steph!!!!

We are off to our Model -T club's annual Christmas dinner. This is what DD is wearing. It didn't turn out quite like I had planned, but it's ok. DD loves it though.

I'd like to believe that when a child turns 18, he will automatically be given some internal gift of "responsibility". For the most part, my DS18, we'll call him George, is pretty problem-free. No drugs or sloughing school. Respectful (when necessary) and hard working.

But.

Last night he decided, in a momentary immature lack of judgment, to light a candle in his bedroom.

On his bookshelf of a headboard.

And left it unattended to use the restroom.

Mind you, I was on the couch glued to a GOOD book (New Moon by Stephenie Meyer, part 2 of the Twilight series :smt023 ) and this was 1:00 in the morning. By the time he was done using the restroom, I asked him, "George, WHAT is that smell???" It smelled like a campfire. Just then the fire alarm sounded throughout the entire house. We both FLEW to his room and saw his bedding ablaze, nearing his curtains. I screamed "FIRE EXTINGUISHER, NOW! to my DH who was two seconds behind us. George and I bravely (or stupidly) flung his bedding onto the floor and frantically stomped and smothered the flames. Cinders took flight and each one had to be patted out. The flames were the size of a big campfire and it was the terrifying to think "What if" after we settled down. We stayed nearby to assure all the little cinders were out. The mattress was pretty much unscathed (treated with retardant?) but his bedding and pillows and headboard were all a total loss.

Let's justs say, George KNEW better. I've told him NEVER to use candles or incense EVER. He felt horrible. Good, I'm glad!

And I made darn sure he understood the gravity of his dumb choice. I think I handled it calmly and chose my words carefully. But he certainly got to see my mama wrath on overdrive.

I almost hesitated to bring up the microwave fire he started last February. But I may have mentioned it to illustrate a pattern (and say "I told you so!")

Oh my gosh Wendy!!!   You must have been so very scared! I am so glad that your son and family are ok.Corey told me a year or two ago that the newer mattress were treated with something so they wouldn't catch fire so quickly. I went out and got him a new mattress the same day.

Heather and I have often said we wouldn't know what to do if something happened to one of our friend's (and that is all of you!) on this thread. I will be saying a prayer thanking God that you and your family are ok.

Here's the last of the outfits I had to finish before our trip. I made sweatshirts for each of the kids so they can still match when it gets cooler. It is fleece and super soft. I just love the material. Here is ds5 demonstrating it:

Are you CASEing Heather? She did the same thing with Sawyer's Mickey jammies! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: They look so cute though!!! You have such adorable kids! I love your little ones hair!!
And YOU should know better than to apologize here, you're lucky Heather is out of town!;)

Don't you know, thoughtful moms do this so their children can better enjoy the pattern!!:rotfl2:
Actually, she is still home, she doesn't leave until tomorrow night. She is now attempting to hook up Tessa's new carseat though. We just realized that both girls (Tessa and Lydia) have outgrown their carseats!

I had the worst vision. I wanted LASIK sooooooooooo badly. I figured nothing could be worse than what I had. Looking back I was probably a little careless with my attitude but I had it done 7 years ago and I must say (and often do) that it was the best money I EVER spent! I don't recall what my vision was before, one tech told me 20/800 but that can't be right :confused3 and after surgery I was 20/30! My only lingering effect is that chopping onions now makes me shed buckets of tears whereas before it did not bother me. My sister on the other had was not as fortunate. She has had a lot of problems with hers. Fortunately one of the leading vision centers, probably in the world--The Moran Eye Center--is in our town and they have been fixing her problems. I think if I were to do it now, I would just pay whatever the cost to have it done by the very best. I went to a cheapo place that was cranking them out and went out of business not long after  I am very fortunate that 7 years later, I am a success story!
Well, I guess I need to come to Utah, visit you guys and have some Lasik!

Okay, back to reading twilight! No sewing for me! Never mind that a houseful of strangers are coming to my house for a party in 2 days and it still looks like, as my kids would say, "it's been hit by a tomato" (as opposed to a tornado).

When Tessa was littler, Heather was practicing with her what to do if there is a fire or a tornado. Tessa always called tornados tomatos too. So, she then asked Heather, "Where do you go if there is a carrot?" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
(Details of that story may be slightly off, but you get the idea!)

just wanted to say i've been lurking for a while now and i FINALLY finished this thread WHEW!! I'm so addicted...I don't do any sewing (yet...haha;) ) but grew up in a house where sewing was a part of my life. My mom is a sewer and I'm constantly bugging her for this or that..she's made my dd's halloween costumes and baby clothes. Not to mention countless bedroom sets, diaper bags, birthday dresses...you name it she's done it. So when I tell her I want to learn she'll probably fall out of her sewing chair! Anyway, KUDOS to all you talented designers...

:welcome: We like it when people come out of lurkdome! Make sure you check out the Photobucket account, there are pictures of all the outfits that have been posted on there! And, the bookmarks is a great resource for free patterns and sewing tips. Both links are in the first post of this thread. The bookmarks link is also in mine and Heathersue's (my sister's) signatures.

Stephres....that dress is amazing!! I love the fabric and the style! You did an AMAZING job!

This is SO worth making a fuss about. It looks wonderful.

Thank you both! I am really proud of it too (can you tell?).

My goodness! Sadly, I can envision Jacob doing something like that 10 years from now, he is easily distracted. I am so glad no one was hurt. Does your house still smell like smoke?

WOW! That's gorgeous! It looks difficult!

Wow that is really pretty! I love it.

Thanks! Was it Tiffani who said she needed the approval of her internet friends? Me too!

Hee! Join the club! It was so thoughtful of you to sew the Mickeys so he could see them! :rotfl2:

Steph, I love that Christmas/Holiday dress. Very beautiful! Oh my goodness, Utahmama!!! I can't believe that!!!

I just wanted to share with you what I made for Courtney to wear to Disney in about a week and a half!!

OMG steph, that is GREAT. It sure does look hard. You did a fabulous job. M looks thrilled. And YOU should know better than to apologize here, you're lucky Heather is out of town!;)

Sorry for apologizing! :thumbsup2

Steph, that is gorgeous! I love it so much! And I love the twirl!

Thank you!

Awwww, thank you! Megan is refusing to open her mouth when she smiles. I am hoping it is just a phase. Of course, I think she is cute anyway, but she would be even cuter if she smile nicely!

Hey, I remember that peasant top! The whole outfit looks great and I bet she was the cutest one there!

Tom - I have a question for you.... I loved the Mrs. Potato Head dress you made for your little princess, and was able to get my hands on one of those t-shirts. I'm not ready to sew anything yet, but was looking at the t-shirt and wondered how you cut out the design and applied it to her dress. Did you sew over the stitching lines on Mrs. Potato Head, or cut just outside the stitching lines and sew there?

Thanks for the help!

BTW - I've loved everything you've posted lately!!

Hi everyone! I know I haven't been posting since I have returned from the world, but I have just been SUPER busy! I have like a jillion things that I need to make, however my DH is MIA. He's been working from 4:30am until 9:00pm every day since we returned and will be continuing to do so until the end of next week! So I am raising 2 kids by my self and it is soooo not easy. I have high respect for all of you single parents! HOwever, I feel that all of this overtime is a HUGE blessing right now so I will not complain! So, enough ranting, I actually am in the process of making a stripwork jumper and was wondering how you do the scrunchy straps? I made these for WDW and used snaps, but they did not work well AT ALL. They kept coming unsnapped!:headache: So I want to try the scrunchy straps but I didn't know how to attach them? Do you sew them between the lining and bodice? or do you sew them behind? I hope this is making some kind of sense but any help would be appreciated! TIA!:flower3:

I sew them in between the lining and bodice. I also have done straps sewn down on both ends with no elastic and they pull over DD2's head just fine.

Aw, we've missed you! Glad for the overtime, but take care of you too.

I have never done elastic straps, but I would imagine you measure how long you want the straps to be and cut the elastic. Then make two "tubes" of fabric that are twice the length and put the elastic inside. Then (and this is how I do my straps) baste the straps to the front of the jumper, pointing down. Then attach the lining and sew all around, leaving spaces in the back for the straps to go. Turn everything right side out and tuck the straps into the holes you made in the back. Last, sew the holes shut with the straps tucked inside. Hope this helps a bit!

Hi all....we've been back now from our Thanksgiving trip for two weeks and I have FINALLY gotten back to normal! (Is that possible!) Our trip was truely magical! :wizard: I will post pics soon!

Well my DH and DD are asleep and I have the sewing machine to myself and an inservice tomorrow instead of teaching, so I can stay up late!! :lmao: SO I'm in the mood to sew a twirl skirt out of the squares. I know that there have been instructions posted - but I cannot look through those 1400 messages to find them! Would anyone share the quick and dirty version of making one? Thanks!

Thanks girls! I can't do buttonholes, so I think this is my next easiest solution! Thanks for your advice! And Steph, WOW!!!!! on that FANCY dress! That is FANTASTIC!

It is very easy, and like jham said I don't even use elastic and I haven't had a problem yet. I don't even know how to buttonholes! Of course, before this week I didn't know how to do zippers either.

Here is my big screw up. I took the leftovers and tried to make skirt for the AG doll I got Megan for Christmas. I was happily sewing away, thinking how smart I was for "whipping" it up and then I tried to put the waistband on the skirt. Ohhhh, the pattern said cut two on the fold! My skirt was much too tiny! And I don't have enough leftover to start over. Doh! Now I just have to go JoAnn's tomorrow to see if they have any so I can finish the skirt!

I love the outfit...too cute...in Florida we don't wear much boots, but I love those....where did you get them?

Try Teresa's bookmarks: http://www.mybookmarks.com/public/teresajoy

She has them all organized so it should take you no time to find what you need. Let us know if you still need help. Of course, I am going to bed, but someone should be by. Have fun sewing!

We need those pictures!!

Like Steph said, the directions are in the bookmarks. It6's a patchwork twirl skirt. Pretty much any directions or website that gets posted here goes into the bookmarks + stuff I find just looking around.

Uggh! Don't you hate that!vWhich doll is M getting?

I noticed she was smiling different lately. Kids are funny! She is still too adorable though! Heather went through a phase like that, byt she was 16!

Do you want to hear a really gross story?? Too bad, I'm going to tell you anyway!

Yesterday, our cat caught a mouse. Well, he was playing with it. I thought Corey got him outside with it. I don't like mice, I tried not to pay too much attention.

This morning, I pick up Arminda's gloves, they had fallen on the floor. One was kind or wrkinkled up. The bus was about to come, so I handed them to Arminda real quick. The bus came and she ran out the door without putting on the gloves.

When she was getting ready to go out for recess, she put on the gloves, and.....felt something squishy inside! :scared1: OH MY GOSH! The mouse was in there, dead! :scared1: I feel SOOOO horrible for her! She shook it out in a frenzy and some other kids saw it and gathered around to see. She says she has never been so humiliated in her entire life! (Although, truth be told, she looked like she thought it was just a little funny)

I asked her what she wore out to recess. She wore the gloves! EEEWWWW!!! It was really really cold out today though, so I guess she didn't have much choice.

:scared1: I'm washing them in hot water right now. :scared1: If that had been me, I would have been so mortified, I would have tried to come home sick!

Goodness, I got behind by two days and had 10 pages to catch up on.

We're still here. I don't want to go home, they got snow yesterday, I'm not ready for snow, especially not in the DC area where people can't drive in the rain and snow, well, let's just say it's amazing that the gov't still moves when it snows because practically no one can drive in it. I'll be honest, the state usually can't clean the roads up enough and in DC everything stops but at least the subway usually works.

It's been chilly here, today was better, it was cold on the 4th. BRRRRR... It sure made the Christmas party more, well Christmassy.

We head home on Sunday morning (just before lunch) so we'll be home around 3. Plenty of time for laundry and getting ready for work.

The only "bad" thing that's happened is that one of Delaney's princess rag dolls is missing, she must have gotten mixed in with the housekeeping laundry. They are supposedly looking for her but no work yet. I'll have to call in the morning and see if they have had any luck, I sure hope they find her, I'm starting to get worried. Delaney is asking about her, if they can't find her I hope I can find one at one of the Disney Stores. She'll be upset if we can't find a replacement.

Tomorrow we're off to join up with the Mousefest folks and visit the Studios. We are really looking forward to the meet the beast outting tomorrow. And the Osborne Lights.

I've got to go and start packing up some things so I'm not in a panic on Saturday night. If I start now, should be much easier, I don't need everything.

We did Christmas with my inlaws tonight. I can barely peel Delaney's new baby Figaro (Minnie's cat) out of her hands. My MIL had been listening to Delaney when she was "shopping" for her special surprise. We get one thing for Delaney and then we let her pick out something as well.

I'm still hoping to catch up with TNmom.

I'll try to post a picture in the morning. I'm having trouble with photobucket right now so I'll try again later.
