I know that this has probably been asked before but does anyone here only use a serger for all their sewing? If so, what kind do you use?

If you have a sewing machine and a serger do you use the serger for anything other than finishing the hems?

Thanks!

I bought the Singer Serger from WM. It was about $190. I love it!!!!!!!!!!

You can do an overlock stictch or a zig zag stitch on your seems. Check your manual to see what your machine will do.

Aww love the family shot....and your DD is just way too cute!!!

Okay, so, a while ago, after Heather finally got some more brown sparkly fabric, I found it! And I was so excited, I had to buy some, even though Heather already had hers! :rotfl2: It just suddenly seemed so rare and valuable! Then I started thinking, well, I have about one more week of fall before we switch over to Christmas attire, I should probably do something with that fabric. No way was I going to try to applique Cinderella, so I thought I'd just whip up what I call a "one week outfit". She'll only wear it for one week so who cares how it turns out. So I turned to my new favorite, the stripwork jumper and thought, hey, why not make some pants to go with it. How hard can that be? And I can just use my scraps, so it will be like free pants, right? I just found a pattern I had for some basic capris with one harmless ruffle and decided to ADD MORE RUFFLES! I don't know what I was thinking. Figuring that out and all that extra gathering was a lot of work for a one week outfit! (OWO). Then, since I was in experimental mode, why not try some fancy action on the pants leg? (Don't you dare tag fairy! I'd never dare to post outside this thread again!) I don't have a serger (yet:rolleyes1 another story, another day) so I wasn't about to ruche/rouche? (can't even spell it, let alone do it) a fabric strip. so I just gathered a scrap of ribbon and sloppily stitched it on thinking "pumpkin vine!" Then I went to applique my little pumpkin and realized that to attatch it to the vine and have it balance out, I'd have to attatch it upside down. Well sideways really. Oh well, OWO right? But I was surprised the applique went as well as it did. I used a narrower zig zag than usual because I'm used to appliqueing giant Mickey heads, but it turned out okay. Then I thought, I really need a peasant top to go under this! That was when sanity kicked in and I realized, waaaayyy too much sewing for a OWO! Besides, DD10 is begging for a peasant top with the pumpkin sleeves, so I'll make one for her and not the spoiled baby. Still...it would look cuter... enough already, here are the photos: (a little boy at Joanns today looked at her and asked "is that a costume?":rotfl: Kids cracky me up).

I took the expert advise from Nurse CastleCreations :mickeybar and went to Magic Kingdom today. I am so GLAD I took the time for myself. Morgan had the BEST time. She was asked to be in the Family Fun parade. She LOVED it!!!!!! To see her at the grand finale waving an american flag in front of a crowd of people on mainstreet brought tears to my eyes. To think two short years ago this little girl was in a fosterhome a world away..........

Dear Ashamed,
I'm dreadfully sorry to hear of all of your pleasant ongoings. I have heard that there is a Magical Place just West of you that cures all. In case this information give to me, was false. Just drive to your East and come and hang out at my house. You can ride on my Nemo float in the pool. ;)
With Sincere Regards,
Your Friend,
Trying to Be Funny..
PS-- Don't run away on a moped, you will get mowed down on I-4 by a Semi, take the car, it's much faster. And please don't do anything drastic like letting your husband convince you, that yes you can indeed balance yourself on Shamu's teeth.
this is hillarious !

Hope that everyone starts having a great day. It's Wednesday people, Hump day, half way to the weekend- where it all gets better.

Here is the finished Nemo. Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm not in love with it but it will work.

This is just adorable!

Okay, who jinxed this thread? After many years of playing basketball, volleyball, training and running a marathon I NEVER sprained my ankle. Today as I was coming down the stairs the phone started to ring so I picked up my pace to answer it and severely sprained my ankle. My DH thinks I did it so I don't have to clean the house for all his relatives. Please think positive thoughts for my foot since we leave in 27 days for WDW and we are commando style tourers. It's also my right ankle, which is my driving foot for the sewing machine.

Ouchy!! I broke my ankle in two places in June, as well as severely sprained it It was not fun I will tell you that. I Hope you feel better soon. and TRUST ME , keep it resting, dont push it. and yeah let everyone else clean the house. hehe I couldnt stand not being on the computer, or sewing, or going to work, or letting the house get messy (however, dont look at it now. hehe)and got up which landed me an extra two weeks back on the couch!

Feel better!!

Ok first off, I Love teddy bear picnic, I can't wait to see the pictures! And I have yet to try my luck with a zipper. I think my zipper foot got "lost" in the mix of our move. haha I know I should just jump on in. Oooh and didnt you love Private Practice tonight?? That was a lot of babies born tonight!

th_snowman011.jpg

SEW cute! This jumper is on my to-do list for my girls, although mine won't be as cute. I'm just to scared to try it yet. I better hurry, though. I'm using the winter Mickey fabric. If I keep procrastinating, it'll be ready in the summer.

Everyone's creations are AMAZING!!!! I have been following the best I can, but between sewing for our trip next week, teacher a bunch of kids Deck the Halls and Hip Hop Reindeer, fighting to get OT for my 6 year old , muscle biopsies and FINALLY having neuromuscular specialists at Children's Hospital in Boston thrown in to consult on our 18 month old I have been swamped. I have taken pics and hopefully will get them up this weekend..

Is it Friday yet? 6 days from now I will be in Disney!:goodvibes

DS2 had a Mickey Mouse birthday party in October. I bought all the nieces and nephews shirts and sewed Mickey heads on them with dental floss. I then rubberbanded the heads so no one would know that's what they were. Of course, my sister guessed what I was up to. Anyway, for the party, all the kids took their shirts and added rubberbands to make tie-dye-type shirts. Instead of using tie-dye, we put the shirts in bleach. When we took the rubberbands off, everyone had a Mickey shirt. Some of the girls added spray-on glitter to their shirts. Here's how they turned out. The blue ones are for the boys.

If you want to give the YCMT another try, I've got photos of how to make it work. The corset top is easy...I learned that I loved shirring on this, and even got it right on my first attempt. I did practice a few lines on scraps, so that probably helped. I was so afraid of trying to shir anything I avoided it, but it really is that easy. If you can sew a straight line, you can do it. And if you can't sew a straight line, draw the first one on in washable pencil before you start, and then just line your foot up on the last line for the next. Really easy, I promise!

I saw those: thank you! I don't why I am so fussy about this: I guess I have a picture in my mind and they are not turning out! Megan of course likes them fine.

Well the MILTON GIRL here:rotfl:, just wanted to say thanks to all of you for your kind comments! And the top in the second pic is the ycmt peasant top. And I promise that shirring IS EASY. I have never done this before and remember I just started sewing a few months ago. I will say that I definitely had to steam the shirt to shrink it up but it truly was easy! So GO FOR IT! And I'm talking to you Stephres!:rotfl2:

Hey Milton girl! I have the corset top half done so I am going to try shirring later this afternoon. Thanks Mindy!

I have seen lots of talk about peasant top patterns recently and it got me to thinking.
The red shirt Morgan is wearing in the parade pic is a REALLY easy peasant top. I started with Simplicity 3680. (Which is a costume dress pattern). I just made it shorter and shirred the top and sleeves. I made one for her pirate outfit and got the whole thing done in about 45 minutes. I think I have made 4-5 tops this way (One I followed the directions and used bias tape and elastic-took WAY too long) I shir 4-5 rows around the neck and 2 on each sleeve. And the pattern comes with long and short sleeves.

Cindee

I actually used that pattern for this one:

100_1947.jpg

The longer sleeves were a bit to flouncy and I guestimated wrong and made it too short (completely my fault) but I did like the pattern. I used elastic because I am a shirring-wuss but I did like the general shape of it. Thank you!

These are so neat! I have been afraid of tie-dying (or tie-bleaching, never thought of that) but it really looks cool!

Don't be silly! When do we get to see it???? Notice there are no close pics of Cindy!

It will be after Tgiving when I get it done. I sent the bodice to my aunt for her to do the buttonholes. I didn't do the full face applique, I cheated and used a panel! I think I'm gonna replace it though when I get it back. Compared to yours, it just looks bad! Of course, everything you do is amazing. I also did one for dd8 that is red/gold and has Belle on it!

You MIGHT have a Mermaid in Michigan. My Aunt is in Michigan. There is that rumor that she was a Weeki Woman YEARS ago. I will have to ask my other Aunt what she knows about that.

Oh, please DOO find out for me! And, could you PM me those Castle light pictures?? Pretty please, with sugar on top? :)

Awww and I am always wishing I lived IN Michigan....all my relatives live there and I miss them sooooooooo much!!! I told my DH that I want move and he just looks at me like I am crazy!!! hahahaha :confused3 :scared1:
I can completely understand that! Brian knows that we can not move more than 30 minutes from my family, and actually, I'm thinking 15 is really my limit. (Hear that Heather?!? don't move any further away!) I would miss my family so much if we lived further away.

Tomorrow is Norah's pre-school's Teddy Bear Picnic. Well, I happen to have a bunch of the cutest teddy bear picnic "fagrick" (how she pronounces it). I made a simple sleeveless dress I'm going to put a long sleeved shirt under and VIOLA!

YES, I'll take pictures, I owe you guys a lot of em....My dh just works late, and comes home pissy most nights. :confused3

I can't wait to see the Teddy bear dress!

But, remember, Steph is going to have a full out coniption if you don't post the Pokemon trainer outfits first. And, well, you just don't know what she might do if she gets too upset. We don't want any more fish tragedies now, do we.

Hey Milton girl! I have the corset top half done so I am going to try shirring later this afternoon. Thanks Mindy!

You can do it!:cheer2: I think you can, I think you can!:) Post pics when you're done, please!:flower3:

These all look great!!! How long did this take to do?

It took a few hours to sew all of the heads. We kept the shirts in bleach for about 1/2 hour or so. Then I washed and dried them all. It was a fun project. Of course, when everyone was done rubberbanding, they wanted to play the birthday games. Sorry, kids, this was all I planned! :rotfl:

Remember the outfit I posted about a couple of days ago? The thanksgiving outfit that was making me a little ungrateful? The stinking ruffler was giving me fits, and I almost threw the machine out the window! Well, I WON! I got it finished in time for my DD to wear it to her Thanksgiving Feast at school today. So, here it is!

Did you use a water and bleach mix? What sort of ratio? I really love the way these look!
