I understand what a ruffler foot is but my sewing machine has a walking foot that came w/ it but I don't know what to use it for. By the way, where in JoAnn's are you guys getting the ruffler foot. The one here in Frisco said they didn't have any at all but that even if they did it would just work on the Viking/Husqvarna sewing machines. Did I ask for it in the wrong section? I would love a ruffler foot, I'm tired of doing all of that gathering and it's never quite even!

Here is a description I found of the walking foot:
Walking foot for quilting and sewing un-even fabric. For a smooth straight-line machine quilting a walking foot is your answer. The walking foot feeds the top, batting and backing evenly through your sewing machine to prevent, fabric layers from shifting and bunching.

This looks like the one I was looking at yesterday:

The ruffler foot I bought was on a little row with some other sewing machine accessories (but not in the notions section). It looks to be a pretty generic low shank foot that would fit any low shank machine. My JoAnn's does not have a big sewing machine/accessories area though (I think I only saw 2 pretty plain Singers on display and none of the accessories were "name brand"), but that is probably because Colony Sewing and Vacuum is literally next door to them :rotfl:

Hey, I bought some fabric at the quilt shop and a pattern for something for Megan:

The stripes are for the capris, the flowers are for the top and the pink is for the lining on the top. My question is for the designers...I am planning on adding a strip of the flowers to the bottom of the capris, should I add some of the stripes to the top? If you can't see the pattern it has several layers and I could mix the flowers and stripes. I don't know if it would be too much. I wish I had the eye for design that some of you have. Any opinions would be appreciated!

Hi Steph! Great minds think alike...I love that pattern and bought it for my DD9. I actually used it already to make a red dot top for my friend's daughter. It was a great pattern though I didnt try the capris yet. I love your idea of adding opposite ruffles! Here's what mine came out like:

IMGP3938.jpg

It just looks like a bunch of dots in the pic. I used black dot ribbon around the bodice so that marks the top of the bodice. In the pic you see the back and it blends into the front! :confused3

Let me know if you have any pattern issues and I will see if I can help! :goodvibes

Wow Lisa! Beautiful work! I just love your designs and work...I really can't say that enough! :goodvibes

Hi all, just wanted to say we are back. My little guy's outfits looked really cute, but everyone thought he was a girl in his pooh jon jons. :rolleyes1

I am going to try and get caught up here. I am sure you have all been busy.

hi everyone,,,

question for you - i have an older but in great shape kenmore machine that does all kinds of stitches etc - i dont have a ruffler foot, but do you think i could get one that would fit? or is it just too old,,,,im going to try for a twirl skirt and would love the ruffler - how does that work anyway???? thanks, wendy

Well, to be honest, I wasn't going to do the capris that go with that pattern. They involve hooks and eyes and zippers! :scared1: I was just going to do some capris I have done before with an elastic waist. I love the small Minnie dot print in it with the black dot ribbon; it's very cute. I think maybe I will do the tie in the stripe and leave the rest of the top in the flowers. That's what I'm leaning to at this point.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions. My daughter loves the idea of adding the bling skull & cross bones. But where would you add it to? The skirt? The corset?

100_0253.jpg

Another idea - if you can find a small enough skull & crossbones - put it on the eyepatch!

That's really cute. It looks good on you too.

So, my DH asked if he could go to JoAnn's with me yesterday... He wanted to pick out a pattern and fabric so that he can make our DD (due mid-December) a dress!! He is so excited about her arrival that he told me he wants to be a part of everything... including sewing for her.

That is so sweet. We have some of the best dhs around on this list.
I've seen pink camo at Wal-Mart around here.

I LOVE this fabric. I think a little of the stripes on the top would look really good.

I need to read back several pages.

I'm working on the Disney Aurora costume. The fabric alone is heavy and it's not velvet or satin, it's a soft cotton calico. I really love the look of Calico Princesses. Which may be more comfy in the 90 degree heat that's predicted next week. :headache:

Norah's witch ballerina and my witch costume are done-ish (except for the zippers) so I'll just post what I've done in a group again.

Aurora is now officially "pizzed" me off! I shouldn't sew tired! I make stooopid mistakes like not sewing right sides together with a super teeny stitch length to have to seam rip out (twice!!!). I had to walk away from the sewing machine so as to not lose my temper. :rolleyes1 I'm in a time out as we speak. :hourglass

So far the bodice and sleeves are fine. The journey to get this far has been perilous, though!

Ok off to catch up on the many pages I am behind!

LOVE the fabric. Did it have a name? My niece has been begging me to make something for her. I bought that same pattern a while back to make something for her but I have such a hard time picking out fabric for her. I don't want it to be too little girlish. VERY cute.

I use my walking foot for quilting. It helps keep the layers together when sewn.

LOL, and if it says "very easy" even better! I am exactly the same!

It was so funny: I let the five year old loose in the quilt shop. We spent about 15 minutes looking at every single bolt and then she sees a selection of all pink stuff. She found this after 30 seconds. I look at the bolt and it's called "Michael Miller Floral Fusion." I remember that Michael Miller is who Lisa Zoe has talked about so I was sold. I was hoping to get something pink and brown or blue and brown and this has it all. Anyway, if you go to Michael Miller's website they have lots of really cute fabrics.

I just about finished the capris (why do I always forget to buy the elastic?) and they look like pajamas! :headache: Hopefully they will look better under the flowery top!

I have an older Kenmore about 10 years old and was able to get the ruffler foot from Hancocks to work just fine. It attaches with the screw that holds on the regular feet. You just need to know if you have a low, slant or high shank. Mine is a low shank.

HTH

THANKS! I love Michael Miller fabric!! Never bought any but have spent tons of time online looking!!

I finished the dress I wanted to make for DD for Ohanas....I love it  A special thanks to teresajoy for sending me this Lilo fabric! You were so nice to do that for me!!!!

And of course I have a million projects left to do and my needle broke as I finished the last few sttches on this! I have to run out now to get a new one. Ugh.

That fabric is really cute!! Great job

I think either color tights would look good with your daughter's outfit. I told my DH that I ordered the tights and he said "like a witch?" I told him that they were for pirates too.

I think the jolly roger bling would look good, I'll have to check it out if I make it there. The closest one is 70 miles away.

I made Tiff's corset reversible too, the inside is just the plain pink.

Oh :scared1: I almost forgot to show you all the matching outfit I made for her American Girl doll. I still have to make her the peasant shirt, the shirt is one that she already had.

th_100_0295-1.jpg

I'm liking all the matching doll outfits!!!

I sewed doll clothes for my DD before I started making clothes for her. They do go by much faster!!! My DD favorite is Kit. She has been telling me Santa is bringing her Kit's scooter since June! LOL Santa better come through with that one.

I hope Santa gets that scooter soon. I'd hate for santa to be on a last minute scramble

We bought Butterick 5439 - I thought it looked like a good one for him to start with (although we will probably leave off the rick-rack the pattern uses). Now all we have to do is find the pink camo fabric he wants. The lady at JoAnn's told us that it has been so popular that they sell out of it almost as soon as it comes in (the last time they got a bolt in, someone bought the whole bolt the first day.) I know I've seen it at a few places recently, so what a wonderful excuse to hit more fabric stores!?!

Now I just need to get him interested in Disney customs and o.k. planning for her first trip.

That is so cute!!! I love that he wants to help

I think a tier of the stripe would be cute or you could even make the tiers patchwork.

Oh you look so cute in it! I followed my size exactly but the seam under the bust was so tight no amount of jigging was getting me in it! Maybe I will try the next size up but I would hate to waste more fabric.

Do you think you could insert a zipper in one side seam? That might make it so you could at least put the top on. :-)

LOVE MM fabric! Even better is that they have so many great prints that work well together.

BTW - I have the same reaction sometimes when I make pants out of a print especially with an elastic waist. They definitely look so much cuter as a complete set, though. I also can't help but think "clown costume" when I start putting ruffles on pants or sleeves. I made this outfit for Zoe and loved her in it but it still made me think "flamenco dancer clown". :rotfl2:

THANKS! I love Michael Miller fabric!! Never bought any but have spent tons of time online looking!!

Watch out - Michael Miller fabric is habit forming. I didn't think I'd ever be able to spend so much on cotton fabric but now it's soooo hard for me to go back to what is available at JoAnns or WalMart. I really only go there for some tonal prints to use for applique. I'm a definite bargain shopper, though, so I'm always watching for good deals on those more expensive fabrics.

OMG!! I APPLIQUED!! I think the ruffle on this outfit took me longer than the applique! (Yes, I had ruffle problems!!) Too late for a model...

IMG_1923.jpg

Now I know everyone is asking "Why the @!* did she do a 4th of July applique in September?!" DD has Constitution day tomorrow at school and everyone was asked to wear red, white, and blue! Don't look too close, the stitches are a bit wonky, but not too bad for my first try. I was more afraid of cutting open the jeans than of the actual appliqueing!

WOW you ladies are amazing!! I spent the last few days going through this ginormous thread, and I'm amazed at the talent here! I can't sew to save my life, so I have to buy all our custom outfits. We are going to Disney at the end of December, and I need to get our outfits together! If anyone knows of a great seller who makes boy outfits, please PM me!! I am so envious of those of you who have girls - there is so much fabulous stuff out there for them! I have two boys, and boy stuff is much harder to come by.

I am having so much fun looking at everyone's creations, though! I'm *almost* inspired to give sewing a shot, but then I remember the words of my high school sewing teacher..... "Aimee, if you promise not to touch the sewing machine again for the rest of the semester, I will give you an A in this class." :rotfl2:
