Good luck with her sleeping. My kids have always been pretty good sleepers with typical phases of disturbance. My younger one has gotten into this nervous phase and she pops out of bed after bedtime with all sorts of worries. You know -- fire and bad stuff etc. She's almost 9 and very creative. Bedtime and when her brain relaxes and then she thinks of things to worry about.
This sounds like my 9 year old daughter too!
My mom made this for our October cruise
She could never get the elastic thread to work, so she made casings for the elastic
Twirl factor
And the best part is, my daughter loves it and will wear it! Now if I could only sneak some hairbows in there!
WHEN did you daughter get so old???? She is growing up! What a lovely young lady she is!!! I love the dress, it is absolutely adorable!!!! I want to see a bigger picture of that picture in front of your fireplace, is that your daughter?
Ok, I'm
finally caught up on this thread. After spending all day last Saturday and Sunday working on my little girl's first day of preschool outfit, then a week of school, I finally got around to reading all of the posts in this thread.
Well, most of you know that my mom is Nana and she usually does the sewing, I forgot to send her the fabric that I bought to make Madison's school outfit. So, I was forced to pull out my own machine and do some sewing. It's not perfect, but it was done for Monday morning.
It's not the greatest picture, because daddy wasn't really focused on the outfit, but here it is. And, it was my first try at applique too.
OHHHH, I LOOOOOVE it!!!! She looks so cute! Great job!
Oh Shirrley, you have the most beautiful daughter!!! I gotta say, Lydia and her new dress looked even more beautiful in person, if that's even possible!!
Awww, thanks Heather! And, DON'T call me SHIRRLEY!

(I just love that snooty smiley!!)
I bought some purple ribbon to make some bows for it today. And, I bought fray check, to stop the purple satin from fraying. All at the
WALMART TWO MILES FROM MY HOUSE!!!!! WOO HOO!!!
Aw, the poor thing! I used to get really scared at night when I was a kid, worrying about fires. I bought my DD a smoke alarm with my voice recorded onto it. Most kids don't wake up to the sound of beeping from a regular fire alarm. Here's a link about it:
http://www.electronichouse.com/article/talking_smoke_alarm/ I found this smoke alarm MUCH cheaper on ebay.
And, when Heather was little she had LOTS of nightmares, I know. We shared a bed. She also thrashed and hit and kicked and made awful noises with her throat, and had several night terrors. I didn't sleep much as a kid.

She also once dreamed she was eaten by an alligator. Ok, well that's more than you ever wanted to know about Heather I bet!
Those are FANTASTIC smoke alarms!!! I bought two for my kids and one for our brother's girls (they share a room). They were REALLY REALLY cheap on Ebay! It will wake Lydia out of a sound sleep, which is AMAZING!!! I had a little nephew that died two years ago in a house fire, so I am super paranoid about these things.

Sorry to hear about the yucky summer you've been having! Here in Michigan we had almost 2 months with almost no rain (which is very unusual for us). So, my husband decided to put in a sprinkler system for our yard. The day he broke ground, it started raining and it hasn't stopped since!!
Yep, no rain for two months, then my dryer broke, and we got a leak in our roof, and NOW it has rained EVERY SINGLE DAY for like two weeks!
Now I know who to blame for all the rain!! How did you make out in last nights storms? Did you get any? It missed us (in Westland) but I think there was a tornado in Livonia (unconfirmed). Luckily I changed DD's birthday party to tomorrow. It was originally planned for today (HUMID and RAINING!!!) Tomorrow looks great though - sunny, with 0% chance for rain!!

Tell your DH he can turn the sprinklers off now!!
I didn't realize you were in Michigan too!
hey, I know Westland and Livonia! I was just in Novi last month.

My family lives in White Lake/Commerce area.
You were in Michigan and didn't call me????
yeah, it was just a LITTLE thunderstorm.

But it sure was FAST! One minute it was a beautiful, sunny day : that turned to DARK, WINDY & SCARY in 1-2 minutes! It only lasted about 40-45 min. There's been a bit of rain off & on ever since.
There's wasn't much warning though.

We have sirens here & not one of them went off, and the cable system didn't send out a beepy-warning-broadcast either ... maybe because it was a little one : dunno.
My 2 girls & I were out back when it hit (toddler pool & water slide). We ran inside, wet swimsuits and all, right down into the basement (have a little spot prepared for storms there). I grabbed the battery-op V-smile & radio along the way

The girls FRE@K'd out for a little while, but "okay" after the noise calmed down.
We lucked out

the Elec. Co. said we'd be without power until Mon or Tues.
Yeah, I totally agree! THANK GOD that tree didn't hurt anyone! IF this had happened next week, when students are moving in to start school (university here), I'm sure we would not have been so lucky.
Too bad, we'll most likely have to cut the rest of it down, now. There goes our shade tree. Time to plant a new one, I guess.
Oh my gosh Laura!!! I'm so glad you and your family are ok! It hit SOOO fast, didn't it! It looked fine, then BOOM! We were running to the basement. Thankfully, the station we were watching (we only get Indiana stations here, channel 16) was keeping us updated on the progress and intensity of the storm, so we knew it was coming. We only lost power for a few seconds, but apparently, we were in the minority here. Most lost power into Friday. My husband's friend still doesn't have any.

To you, because I know how scared you and your girls must have been.
I think I must not have had my iron set right. I ended up replacing my iron today because my old one was dying, so who knows if it was heating properly or not.
SO, here's the verdict. My first applique. Be gentle. It's obviously on just a scrap. It's pretty hideous.
From a distance, it's not absolutely laughable, but man when you look at it up close, it is BAD. How do you get your stitches to be so straight? Is the answer just practice, practice, practice?
I think it looks great! I have yet to attempt an applique. But, I have a Cinderella outfit in mind. I bought some cool pumpkin fabric (NOT Halloweeeny at all!

)at Walmart today, and I think it needs a Cinderella applique.
I find it really interesting to read about all the school stuff. Are your kids allowed to wear what they want to school. My children do go to a private school and we have a really strict uniform but even our public school kids have a school uniform. I would love to be able to send my kids in nice clothes. But as for air con, I think all our schools have that so it does surprise me that you don't but I suppose this is why we are all different.
Sam from down under
I don't think there are many schools around here that have a strict dress code. I would hate not being able to dress the kids how I wanted.
My daughter's school doesn't have AC, but I think the high shcool, were my son goes does. My daughter's classrooms get SWELTERING hot some days! A few years ago (ok, about 20 or so) many of the schools around here decided to put in new windows that only open a crack. Then, there was suppose to be some sort of air transfer system that brought in cool air from outside. Apparently no one thought that through too far to realize that the air outside wouldn't be cool on 90+ degree days! Apparently though, it does help with the heating costs.
