I'm glad LisaZoe mentioned it. I don't applique that much, and haven't had much trouble I just throw the muslin out when it gets old, and use a new one. This might be worth looking into, with a coupon of course!!

I should have mentioned - I found mine at Hancock Fabrics - in the quilting notions section. It is folded up flat in a plastic bag kind of wrapping. It only cost $6.99. It was hard to find because I wasn't really sure what I was looking for. Mine is made by June Tailor.

Dena does great work and that froggy outfit is adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Tinkerbell overalls are finally finished!! Please excuse DD's wet hair and lack of top. She was fresh out of the shower and I wanted to catch the pics while she was agreeable. :rolleyes1

I started these back when I was just starting and I've learned a lot from all of you. Had I waited, I probably would have done a few things differently.

Thanks for looking!

I like this style very much! How did you decide where to have the jeans portion end and the material start? Right above the knees?? Or are yours just below the knees? I really want to try a pair of jeans in this gaucho style, but am confused where to start. Thanks:cloud9:

She can wear sandals to school, as long as they have a back to them. No flip flops, or wheeled foot wear are allowed.

It was so hot here yesterday, that a lot of the surrounding schools closed due to the heat. DD's school does not have a/c, except for the library, and the office! She was so hot and flushed by the time she got home! Even her Minnie bow drooped from the heat!
She did have fun though, and can't wait until the weekend is over!

Kindergartenreturn003.jpg

She does have to wear tennis shoes on gym day.

I find it really interesting to read about all the school stuff. Are your kids allowed to wear what they want to school. My children do go to a private school and we have a really strict uniform but even our public school kids have a school uniform. I would love to be able to send my kids in nice clothes. But as for air con, I think all our schools have that so it does surprise me that you don't but I suppose this is why we are all different.

I think I must not have had my iron set right. I ended up replacing my iron today because my old one was dying, so who knows if it was heating properly or not.

SO, here's the verdict. My first applique. Be gentle. It's obviously on just a scrap. It's pretty hideous.

From a distance, it's not absolutely laughable, but man when you look at it up close, it is BAD. How do you get your stitches to be so straight? Is the answer just practice, practice, practice?

I know exactly what you are going through. I have only been doing appliques for a few months and as long as I was using the zig-zag pressor foot, my lines were "wonky" (is that the word?). Once I found this pressor foot, my appliques have been much, much better. It makes it very easy to follow the edge of your design. HTH!

Oh I got these in the mail today and am super happy. Words cannot described how awesome this Halloween/witch outfit is! It was made by our own Dena here (hope that is okay Dena!). The second froggy outfit I got cheap. It includes the peasant top, overalls, hairbow, hair scrunchie, and shoes. It is very cute. Darling for daycare!

Please pay no attention to the piles upon piles of laundry on my table in the background! Also she was not into taking pictures, we just went to two soccer games in the 118 degree heat. Luck for us the games were at noon and 2:30 so we made sure to catch the full on brunt of the heat!!

I love these they look fantastic.

I no you may think this is a really dumb question. But when you are all doing your stiching around the edge of the applique, do you use a normal sewing machine and if so what stich type and settings do you use or do you have a special machine that does it. Sorry but am very new to this.

Thanks

I love them! But then of course, Tink is my favorite. Did you start out with new overalls? I've been debating hitting some thrift shops to see what I could find.

No, I didn't use new overalls. These were a pair that had gotten too short for Megan so we decided to alter them. I say hit the thrift store!! I have a couple more pairs of jeans that I picked up at a thrift store and I hope to make them into some custom capris.

What a cutie! You did a great job on the outfit!

She's precious! I especially love the green sleeves on the peasant top and the sneakers.

Well, I used a very intricate mathematical formula. Are you ready? I attached the TINK letters to the right leg and then cut the overalls off just below the letters. These happen to be cut below the knee. My fabric strips are rectangular and gathered to fit the leg of the overalls. I think if I did this style again, I'd use tapered strips for a more natural flare.

I hate to even admit this - that is the foot that I AM using. And it's STILL wonky! Maybe I'm messed up!

:offtopic: SW MICHIGAN ... We had a "little" thunderstorm Thursday. The high winds caused a MANY trees to fall/break in our area. + Power was out for nearly 30 hours. ...
This is some of what's been happening here, over the last two days.
note :This IS NOT OUR HOUSE, but it is OUR TREE!
Thank goodness for insurance, right!?!?
Now, the neighbors will get their "back covered stairwell" & screened in porch replaced/remodeled, sadly the cost of repairs is nearly half the value of the house. ... For two seconds, right after hearing the repair quote, I thought it was sort-of sad that it didn't hit our porch. oh well. ... At least no one was hurt. (It's a "student" rental house = thank goodness it was a vacation week & no one was home.)
(*CLICK PIX TO ENLARGE*)

:sad2: NOTE = The size of this HUGE TREE is hard to see in the pictures. (See that guy in the last picture = he's nearly 6ft tall & dwarfed in comparison) ... the base of this monster is OVER 5-6ft in diameter, and that "branch" that crushed the neighbors house was over 2ft in diameter ... The house, hit by the tree, is TWO houses away from ours. Our yard & house is not even in these pictures.

Ohhhhh!!!! Well.... that's one way for them to get a re-model ;) ! Really glad to hear no one was injured. My back hurts just thinking of the clean-up they are faced with. If you're helping, promise you won't over-do it!!!!! That tree alone will be quite a chore to remove! :upsidedow Hang in there :flower3:

Awesome!!!!! I spy with my little eye, some fairies stuck to your window ;)

I love the witch outfit! The shoes are great with the froggie outfit....YOU SCORED! Dont you just love the thrill of the hunt????

We will be attending MNSSHP on the 14th also. This is what Destiny will be wearing. Be sure to say hi if you see us.

Have you been holding out on us??? Tell us more about this outfit!!! Did you make it? LOVE the skirt. I still haven't done a twirl.

Yes, I am super behind. My mother's been here all week. She and I have been keeping busy everyday!

It's certainly not laughable. Practice is definitely worth doing IMHO. Also, I think it helps to go as slow as your machine can while you get used to guiding the fabric to go around curves. You might also try a slightly wider stitch to see how you like that. The wider stitching makes little wiggles less noticable than a narrower stitch. Don't forget that few people do things perfectly the first time... or that's what I assure myself when I'm being hyper critical of my errors. ;)

I know exactly what you are going through. I have only been doing appliques for a few months and as long as I was using the zig-zag pressor foot, my lines were "wonky" (is that the word?). Oh, good point. The applique foot definitely makes a difference for me, too.

Sam from down under

I use my regular sewing machine on the zigzag setting with the stitch length set to the lowest setting. The width is something I adjust based on the detail of the applique as well as the size of it. I use the narrowest width for small pieces where detail matters, like eyes, mouth, etc. I use a wider setting for larger areas where there is still some detail. I sometimes use an even wider setting on very simple shapes where I want the stitching to be a bolder element of the design.

Sam,

It depends on where you live. I know that 99% of the private schools have uniforms. Many public schools do not have uniforms. Normally they have a dress code. Most public schools (in our area) that have uniforms are schools with "at risk" students.

Most schools don't for the cost. It's only a few months that they need it. Our school does have AC. Kirsta goes to a Charter School, and has to wear a uniform. A Charter School is public, but it's a specialty school. Kirstas school is greek. She learns greek, and some of the teachers have come over from Greece to teach. Quite a few public schools have gone to uniform in the sense they need to wear a white polo and khaki pants. I wish she had casual Friday or something like that, I can dress her up in this fun stuff.

Darn, I was just in JoAnnes, I should have looked.

Good luck with her sleeping. My kids have always been pretty good sleepers with typical phases of disturbance. My younger one has gotten into this nervous phase and she pops out of bed after bedtime with all sorts of worries. You know -- fire and bad stuff etc. She's almost 9 and very creative. Bedtime and when her brain relaxes and then she thinks of things to worry about.
This sounds like my 9 year old daughter too!

My mom made this for our October cruise

She could never get the elastic thread to work, so she made casings for the elastic

And the best part is, my daughter loves it and will wear it! Now if I could only sneak some hairbows in there!

WHEN did you daughter get so old???? She is growing up! What a lovely young lady she is!!! I love the dress, it is absolutely adorable!!!! I want to see a bigger picture of that picture in front of your fireplace, is that your daughter?

Ok, I'm finally caught up on this thread. After spending all day last Saturday and Sunday working on my little girl's first day of preschool outfit, then a week of school, I finally got around to reading all of the posts in this thread.

Well, most of you know that my mom is Nana and she usually does the sewing, I forgot to send her the fabric that I bought to make Madison's school outfit. So, I was forced to pull out my own machine and do some sewing. It's not perfect, but it was done for Monday morning.

It's not the greatest picture, because daddy wasn't really focused on the outfit, but here it is. And, it was my first try at applique too.

th_Maddie1stdayofschool.jpg
OHHHH, I LOOOOOVE it!!!! She looks so cute! Great job!
Oh Shirrley, you have the most beautiful daughter!!! I gotta say, Lydia and her new dress looked even more beautiful in person, if that's even possible!!

Awww, thanks Heather! And, DON'T call me SHIRRLEY! :snooty: (I just love that snooty smiley!!)
I bought some purple ribbon to make some bows for it today. And, I bought fray check, to stop the purple satin from fraying. All at the WALMART TWO MILES FROM MY HOUSE!!!!! WOO HOO!!!

Aw, the poor thing! I used to get really scared at night when I was a kid, worrying about fires. I bought my DD a smoke alarm with my voice recorded onto it. Most kids don't wake up to the sound of beeping from a regular fire alarm. Here's a link about it: http://www.electronichouse.com/article/talking_smoke_alarm/ I found this smoke alarm MUCH cheaper on ebay.

And, when Heather was little she had LOTS of nightmares, I know. We shared a bed. She also thrashed and hit and kicked and made awful noises with her throat, and had several night terrors. I didn't sleep much as a kid. :rotfl: She also once dreamed she was eaten by an alligator. Ok, well that's more than you ever wanted to know about Heather I bet!

Those are FANTASTIC smoke alarms!!! I bought two for my kids and one for our brother's girls (they share a room). They were REALLY REALLY cheap on Ebay! It will wake Lydia out of a sound sleep, which is AMAZING!!! I had a little nephew that died two years ago in a house fire, so I am super paranoid about these things.
[/QUOTE]

Sorry to hear about the yucky summer you've been having! Here in Michigan we had almost 2 months with almost no rain (which is very unusual for us). So, my husband decided to put in a sprinkler system for our yard. The day he broke ground, it started raining and it hasn't stopped since!!

Yep, no rain for two months, then my dryer broke, and we got a leak in our roof, and NOW it has rained EVERY SINGLE DAY for like two weeks!

Now I know who to blame for all the rain!! How did you make out in last nights storms? Did you get any? It missed us (in Westland) but I think there was a tornado in Livonia (unconfirmed). Luckily I changed DD's birthday party to tomorrow. It was originally planned for today (HUMID and RAINING!!!) Tomorrow looks great though - sunny, with 0% chance for rain!! :woohoo: Tell your DH he can turn the sprinklers off now!!
I didn't realize you were in Michigan too!

hey, I know Westland and Livonia! I was just in Novi last month.;) My family lives in White Lake/Commerce area.

You were in Michigan and didn't call me????:rotfl:

yeah, it was just a LITTLE thunderstorm. :) But it sure was FAST! One minute it was a beautiful, sunny day : that turned to DARK, WINDY & SCARY in 1-2 minutes! It only lasted about 40-45 min. There's been a bit of rain off & on ever since.
There's wasn't much warning though. We have sirens here & not one of them went off, and the cable system didn't send out a beepy-warning-broadcast either ... maybe because it was a little one : dunno.
My 2 girls & I were out back when it hit (toddler pool & water slide). We ran inside, wet swimsuits and all, right down into the basement (have a little spot prepared for storms there). I grabbed the battery-op V-smile & radio along the way :) The girls FRE@K'd out for a little while, but "okay" after the noise calmed down.
We lucked out :) the Elec. Co. said we'd be without power until Mon or Tues.
Yeah, I totally agree! THANK GOD that tree didn't hurt anyone! IF this had happened next week, when students are moving in to start school (university here), I'm sure we would not have been so lucky.
Too bad, we'll most likely have to cut the rest of it down, now. There goes our shade tree. Time to plant a new one, I guess. :flower3:

Oh my gosh Laura!!! I'm so glad you and your family are ok! It hit SOOO fast, didn't it! It looked fine, then BOOM! We were running to the basement. Thankfully, the station we were watching (we only get Indiana stations here, channel 16) was keeping us updated on the progress and intensity of the storm, so we knew it was coming. We only lost power for a few seconds, but apparently, we were in the minority here. Most lost power into Friday. My husband's friend still doesn't have any.    To you, because I know how scared you and your girls must have been.

I think I must not have had my iron set right. I ended up replacing my iron today because my old one was dying, so who knows if it was heating properly or not.

I think it looks great! I have yet to attempt an applique. But, I have a Cinderella outfit in mind. I bought some cool pumpkin fabric (NOT Halloweeeny at all! :cool1: )at Walmart today, and I think it needs a Cinderella applique.

I don't think there are many schools around here that have a strict dress code. I would hate not being able to dress the kids how I wanted.

My daughter's school doesn't have AC, but I think the high shcool, were my son goes does. My daughter's classrooms get SWELTERING hot some days! A few years ago (ok, about 20 or so) many of the schools around here decided to put in new windows that only open a crack. Then, there was suppose to be some sort of air transfer system that brought in cool air from outside. Apparently no one thought that through too far to realize that the air outside wouldn't be cool on 90+ degree days! Apparently though, it does help with the heating costs.

Hi everyone.... ok so I checked into POR today... who made the pirate dress with the black material with small white skulls? the top was shirred... I know I saw it here LOL... It was a curly haired blonde girl

I saw the kids in the gift shop tonight but couldt remember who it was and I didnt want to approach them lol

kind of off topic, but is anyones kids into Webkinz we got this elephant that I have no idea what to do with!
Lori

Okay, I just got back from my scrapbooking convention. I feel better now btw! I'm 25 pages behind here, but if anyone has questions about Webkinz, I'm your woman! It was my obssession before I found you guys! I still log in daily to water my plants faithfully!!! Okay, going back to catch up!
