Oooooh - cute! I have some school fabric here that looks the same to make something for DD - I can't wait to see what you make! I would probably use black thread - but I am no expert!

Black is what I was thinking too.

This is the outfit that I have in my head to make. I plan on making a dress (shorter length) and then when it gets cooler, I am going to make her some pants for it.

What do you think? Also, where the skirt part meets the top, would you put some red ric-rack or something on it? Looks like it needs something on there.

The black strips at the top are the straps -- just in case anyone is wondering.

So irritated... got a Disney Brother machine for my b-day and I can't get it to work right. The tension is wonky and no matter what I do I can't get the bobbin thread to stay straight. I know CastleCreations has this machine. Any help you might offer?? Oh, and it caught the upper thread in the bobbin case when I was trying a Mickey Head embroidery. Ugh...

PS...It's my b-day today, too, tberi.
We were born on the same day! :cool1:
Happy birthday!

I don't know how I missed that? Happy Birthday to you too (belated)!!! I was hoping for a machine too, but DH got me a new tattoo- he knows I've been wanting a new one and I think he thought it would make me feel young- funny. It's a pretty swallow on my shoulder (the front side)

Hope you get your machine sorted out that's kind of a bummer. I know I was ready to take my new rotary cutter home and start on DD's stripwork top.:rotfl:
...t.

Don't tease me!! I was just talking about getting a cuttle bug w/ my b-day money. Now you know what I'd really like is a cricut, but at $99 per cartridge... forget that I can't afford the machine

Most cartridges have come down to $59 each, sometimes on ebay you can get more than one at a time and get even a better deal. I love mine. The new expression is out that cuts images up 24 inches, After our Disney trip, I'm saving to upgrade to it!

Okay guys this is off topic, :offtopic: but I need help with a reward for my oldest dd. She has stepped in and taken up the slack for me this past year while I have been ill. She has been super responsible and I couldn’t have made it through without her help. The kicker to all of this is that Saturday I was having a horrible day and I couldn’t seem to function at all. I wanted to sew but I couldn’t and then I tried to get on here, but that wasn’t great either. She knew I wanted to get more items finished and that I was disappointed in myself for not being able to. So without a word, she came and set down in front of me with all this stuff and started to massage my feet and then gave me a pedicure with polish! :sad1:

Oh my gosh, what a wonderful little girl! You must be a really loving mother to have such a thoughtful girl.

I'm sure this has been told somewhere but what is the best way to wash your material? I have never washed mine before but guess I should start.

Thanks.

I just throw it into the wash and wash it with the rest of my clothes (with like colors). I don't use fabric softener, in case want to applique with it.

hi all,

any ideas for decorating boys jean shorts without making them girly? its for a 3 year old boy,,,,,, thanks!

I don't like girly looking outfits for boys, either. So, I haven't made much for my son. I was considering adding some cargo pockets in Disney fabric to some store-bought shorts. I also like some simple appliques for boys.

Ok, this is my first attempt at appliques. The first thing I did was the name "Ariel" and I'm really proud of that. The next thing was the Ariel cutout from the fabric of the top and that was a little tricky, but I managed. Then I did Sebastian... now that was rough. thought it would be easy since it's all one color, except the eyes. Actually, in hindsight, it should have been easy. I just made it complicated by not knowing how to finish the inside lines. I think it looks horrible, but Sarah loves it and that's all that matters. Anyway this is my first one, I have another one to do and it will be a little different.

BTW, don't look too closely!!!! All constructive criticism and advice will be gratiously accepted!
th_Sarahsariel.jpg

I was off the boards for a few days and you post some absolutely fabulous appliques!!! GREAT job!!!

SOOOO cute, I love it!!

I just wanted to say that she looks so cute and stylish with her new 'do!

Maybe make a big deal out of how you never make a deal for anyone and say "so please don't tell anyone."...it is tough if your neighbors end up not liking someone. I saw them get really evil to one of the women who lived down our street. Then the funniest part is that the one who was evil to her became friends with her...:rotfl2:

Yeah, I've got evil neighbors....Oh, wait, they're my parents!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: (I'm sorry I was unaware of the 3 laugh minimum in previous posts)

Where did you find that Pony fabric? My DD would LOVE it!!

Thank you! ONce I got the Minnie head, and saw some fleece still attached, it made me start hinking of all of those things that go on clearance. You know it wouldn't matter what size, 'cause you can just cut out what you want. A whole new way to shop

I found myself looking at the clearance clothes at JCPenney on Friday. I couldn't just look at the stuff. I had to think "hmm...what could I make with that fabric?" Or, "How could I make that cuter?"

Those are all really good questions. I cannot help but I am really interested to hear the answers. I bought the elastic thread as well. I need it for YCMT skirt. I just have not tried it yet.

Oops, I multi-quoted the multi-quote. But, I wanted to give my professional expertise, as I have shirred THREE times, yes, THREE times!;) I use my machine to wind the bobbin thread. It just works like the regular thread on my machine (if you have an evil machine like my sisters, this won't work). Then, I sew the outfit into a tube (I think it would be really hard to match up the side seams after it was shirred) and sew with the elastic thread on the inside of the outfit, so it doesn't show. HTH!

Well, I’ve been busy lately and haven’t had a chance to post. DD4 had a birthday on Saturday. She picked Nemo for the theme. Of course, I had to make her and DD5 patchwork twirly skirts and matching tops. And DS1 wore the shorts and shirt I posted here, oh 700 or so pages ago. And I made myself a top with scraps from the patchwork skirts. DH wore an orange shirt. That’s the best I could get from him.

I’m also sewing for our WDW trip TOMORROW! (Quick trip. We’ll be back Sunday.) I’ve made both DD’s pirate twirly skirts with tulle. DS1 pirate short alls (which are so big they fit DD4 better than him). DN10 a pirate dress (I posted that about 200 pages ago). DN6 a pirate top. And a pirate top for me. Did I mention we’re going to the Pirate & Princess Party?

I’ve also made DS1 Mickey shorts and top. I made myself a Minnie top to match DD’s Minnie dresses I posted here about 400 pages ago.

I’ve been sewing and packing so no pics until I get back. And no one’s allowed to post too much! I have such a hard time keeping up as it is!

I'm so mad at my computer! It's not recognizing the drive for the camera card so I can't upload my pictures! I tried rebooting and cursing at it but so far it is not responding. Anyway, I had a picture of Megan getting on the bus in her froggy outfit (sniff!) and the Epcot top I finished last night. I'm not sure if I like it and I wanted advice. I did the stitch around the face and hair in black and I'm not sure if it looks good or if I should rip it out and do it in matching thread. Ugh: I wish you guys could see it.

I can't figure out what bottom I should do with it either. I bought jeans to cut off but it is so freaking hot here (and we are going on Labor Day weekend) that I think she would be really uncomfortable. I don't know if I should do skorts, capris or what color or anything.

CGriswalds: I found some animal buttons at Mike's so I am ready to attempt the tree! I don't know what wording I should put on it though. Jacob said "anything except Little Einsteins please." I was thinking "Safari" but that's not really Disney-ish. I loved the My Little Pony dress. Did you get the fabric at Waldemort? I haven't seen it at JoAnn's.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. I sent DH a not so nice e-mail about this computer; it happened once before and he fixed it. I hope he can give me directions so I can post the pictures so you all can tell me what to do!

I'm gald I'm not the only lame one looking at 2 yds of minnie dot thinking " that could be a matching top for me!!"

I NEED purple pooh toile. None at my waldemort, they are nixing their craft sections...  and they had crap there.

any help??

No, I didn't but it's just as well, they probably wouldn't have liked it. SIL and DB hated the shoes :sad2: After that, I thought for certain after that they wouldn't like the outfit. They said they did like it, I wonder if DN3 even got to see the shoes :confused3 They never have her open her gifts until she gets home so I have no idea. The shoes came before the outfit and all of it had to be rushed as my DN3 B-day party was moved up a week at the last minute :rolleyes1 I wound up begging the designers to rush and have it all overnighted. I did tell DB and SIL to return it all to me after the shoe comments if they didn't like it as I would save it for when my other DSIL has children. DN3's mom offered to give it back after DN3 wore it to WDW in case I wanted to hold on to it to give to my other SIL down the road  I said no, that it was hers to keep. I would never re-gift after it was worn  DB did apologize for having "different tastes" I said it wasn't necessary, if I had kids and they gave me something plain an unimaginative for my kids I would not like it one bit :lmao:

I wound up buying instructions on how to make bows on Voldemort that also contained video so I can follow along.

Sorry, I just needed to vent :scared:

I'm so sorry that happened to you!!! Some people! :confused3

I had a similar thing happen, but it wasn't family.
I made a custom appliqued set, shirt & pants, for a little boy (his dad & my DH have worked together for the last 7+ years and our oldest children are both 5yrs old and a mere 4 months apart). I stayed up all night making it, at the last minute & it turned out great! ...
At the party the next day, as he opened it & totally went ga-gaa over it = his grandmother said to the person NEXT TO ME, "what?! they couldn't find something store-bought to give to him! Geez!" ... She didn't know it was ME, standing 2.5 feet from her, that had made it, especially for him. And I'd be willing to bet money, that she does not sew, nor is crafty, so has no idea what went into making it.

oh well. At least the little boy & his mom loved it!

I don't really have an extended family, so the FAMILY I made is reeeeally important to me. ... I've watched my friends' & co-worker's bigger families over the years = I've been dumbfounded that people treat each other/relatives the way they do sometimes. Sometimes, they treat strangers better than they do their own blood. ... I'm not sure anymore, what's worse, having a big family or not. ... I HOPE by my growing up without much of a family, I can impress upon my girls, the importance of loving the family they do have :)

Yes! I can totally see little Halloween themed Mickey fabric done in pants to go with it! My girls haven't grown much so they said they wanted to wear them again when we go this year. I was suprised since they are now 11 and almost 15 and they still like boutique clothing to some extent!

That part warms my heart! My 9 year old dd loves what I do for her sister who is 5! I don't think that she is too into it for herself. Anything I make for her has to look like we bought it in a store or it's a no go. I have dreams of making her formals though, so there is hope. I won't do it unless she really wants me to though. It's my hobby not hers afterall.

:welcome: I do sew, but from the amount of things I've sewn lately, you wouldn't know it!!!

Here's a little proof that she can, in fact, sew:

This is my junior prom dress Teresa made me back in 1991:
Prom91.jpg

Here's my senior prom dress she made me back in 1992. The teal velvet was expensive, so I had her made a skimpy little thing. My DH (BF at the time) wasn't drunk, he just looks that way.

Prom92.jpg

She made the flowergirl dress and the little honorary flowergirl dress for my wedding. That's my nephew, the ringbearer. Do they come any cuter than that? I think not!

Wedding-CoreyMeCourtneyBecca.jpg

She made her own Matron of Honor dress for my wedding. This is her, with her DH (isn't he cute?), and her DS, who is now 15:

That girl has skills!!!   So, impersonating a dancing banana is not the limit of her abilities!!

Thanks to the_seamstress for the tip on quoting using the smaller pic!:goodvibes
you're welcome, any time! :)

Like we reeeally needed another way to cram A TON MORE STUFF into this thread, right ?! ;)

I'm glad I finally noticed that those little blue arrows, in the QUOTES, refer you back to that original post ... ("duh", on me!) ... it really helps conversational continuity :) especially when you're lagging back about 30 pages ;)

1. clearly the woman was not a crafter or had any tact. You know I get anxious about giving handmade gifts for just that reason. some people just don't appreciate it. And clearly the issue was not what you could afford, sometimes I spend 3 times what I would have paid for something at Target.

2. You are exactly right, family can be terrible. My DH has a big italian family and so many of them are terrible to each other. My family has never really been the kind that have family vacations/ reunions etc. once you have your own husband and children then you are your own little unit..so we are trying to raise our kids like you to know the value of ALL of your family and to keep them close to your heart. I say good for you.

ONLY YOU could make me laugh AND cry at the very sime time!!! Oh, the memories! Now, I have to find a camera, because I am going to post a picture that will SHOCK you!

ETA: I was VERY pregnant when I made her senior prom dress, do I get extra points for that?

I vote for family      If you are VERY lucky, your daughters will have the kind of relationship Heather and I have.

Slightly OT:

Since I am re-doing all my DDs tops, I am wondering if I should make some of them long sleeves.
We are going over Thanksgiving and first part of Dec.

What do you think? Short of long sleeves?
Thanks.

In other news: I am more than half way through my first peasant blouse for her. I will post when I get it done.

Well, girls, I'm almost done with some outfits for my son and I need some suggestions. Listed below are three overall sets.....Safari, Sorcerer, and Stitch. The Safari and Stitch look a little plain, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what I can add to spruce them up. I think the sorcerer looks fine by itself because there's a broom added on the back, although I have to add on the handles yet. I was thinking of doing a beach scene with a surf board on one leg for the stitch overalls and maybe do a lion on the back for the safari. These will be cut at a bermuda short length. Any ideas?
I also threw in pics of his necklaces. :)

What does everyone think about putting "I've been naughty" on the back of the stitch overalls? Or not? Should I just stick to pictures? Help ladies! I need suggestions! :goodvibes

I just found this thread - and I'm loving it. Did you post somewhere how you made the appliques for these overalls? I'd love to do something like this of rmy nephew.

I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THAT!

I married into a family who thinks it's tacky or CHEAP to give a home made gift....The family I was raised in, however, thinks it's beyond the stars to give or receive a home-made gift. Anyone can buy a gift, but to take the time to make something special from the heart...is the most wonderful gift of all!!!

So one Christmas, after MONTHS of hard work, I gave each of my Nieces and Nephews a hand tied comforter I had made special for each one according to his or her "likes"...and later heard a few hurtful comments that had been said by their parents (my inlaws). But! 8 years later, EACH one of those special comforters are still treasured gifts and several of the now-teen kids have thanked me over the years for the thoughtfulness.

So rude people will be in our lives, but thoughtful gifts are never tacky.
