I love it too. Did you see the straps...cool version. It kinda reminds me of "Birds on a Wire", the short video they show before one of the Pixar movies...I think its Toy Story?? Anyways... its very cute and I can't wait to see what you do....post pics! ;)

I have seen birds on a wire...it's my favorite...I have it on my itunes...lol it's great!!!!
I can't wait to get it..it was expensive but better than spending $135 for this outfit...:rotfl:

It takes me forever to catch up on this thread. I can't be gone for more than a couple hours at a time! Everyone has been so busy creating gorgeous outfits.

Here's my latest creation. Keep in mind I made it for my 10-year-old niece. DD5 and DD3 are modeling it. Needless to say, it's just a tad too big. The top is shirred and the trim is just red bias tape. Love that stuff!

I'm also in the process of making DD5 and DD3 skirts with this same fabric. And DS1 is getting overalls with the treasure map fabric and this black fabric as an accent. These all need to be done before our trip in 2 weeks.

I also need to get ready for DD3's bday party next Saturday. It's Nemo themed. Our Joann's doesn't have any Nemo fabric, so I bought some from Voldemort. I need to make both DD's something, but I don't know what. I guess when the fabric comes, I'll figure it out then.

See? Lisa Zoe has inspired me too. My current goal is to have a twirl dress that goes all the way horizontal when twirling. HOW does that work? NO, don't answer. I'll figure it out.

Watch out - those twirl skirts/dresses are infectious. ;) Now that I've done several really full versions, it's hard to go back. My basic "formula" was developed to use fabric as efficiently as possible. Each tier is about twice as long as the one above it so it can use quite a bit of fabric, about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 yards. You can get the same amount of twirl with less fabric (and a lot less gathering :)) with one like these:

snow_white6.jpg

eiffel_twirl3-1.jpg

Each panel is a wedge of a circle with the center cut out for the waist. I used more panels than would be a circle to add a little extra fullness but I love that I don't have as much gathering to do... unless I make an attached petticoat/crinoline as I did with these. ;)

Do I need one? I keep thinking it sure would be nice to have nice, finished looking garments on the inside. Those of you that are doing such great work here, do you use a serger? I seriously know NOTHING about sergers. Do you use them to sew on, or just to finish the seams after the garment is finished?

I'm already thinking ahead to Christmas and thought that I would ask for a new sewing machine (that Brother 6000 something that everyone keeps posting about), but I wonder if I should get a serger instead. What do you think?

I love your work!! Your appliques are fabulous.
It's such a coincidence that you posted a picture of your precious daughter in this kind of skirt. I was wondering if the panels are cut in a perfect rectangle-ex: top and bottom both 6 inches......or are the panels tapered being wider at the bottom and getting narrower at the top? I would really appreciate some help with this question because I'm trying to figure out a pattern to make a skirt for my niece. Thanks so much!!

This is a non-Disney..outfit that I loved..I didn't bid but I bought the fabric today... and can't wait to get it...it's it darling...

I almost bought that fabric! I love it, so cute.
I had no idea what I would do with it so I walked away. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I love that Pixar short....did you recognize my avatar :)

  I'm back and I have finally caught up!!

Wow lots of gorgeous new skirts, dresses and some cute boy's shorts as well!

Tomorrow I will post a couple pictures from our hot sweaty trip. I will never book another trip in August again! :rotfl2: No matter how much a discount I get on the room. DH got sick and had to go to a Doctor. He spent a lot of time in the room resting.

TeresaJoy....
Wow! I finally took some time and really went through your links and they are GREAT. I peaked at it a few weeks back and found just what I was looking for then - pillowcase dress. But I think the list of links has grown since then :).
Thank you for keeping that list. :thumbsup2

I need to go back and make sure I have a bookmark for it.
THANK YOU!

Thanks for thanking my sister! :goodvibes She spends a lot of time on the links and it's nice to hear when they help someone!

now this is not a custom but had to share. DD is a flower girl in a wedding the day we leave for Disney :scared1: and they just got her dress in and I have to share pics since I am on a roll.

How gorgeous!!! Okay, since you shared a flowergirl dress, I get to share the dress DD wore in a wedding in June. I bought it on Valdemort (YAY! I'm so glad I got to use that new code!) and added the red flowers and the red ribbons to match the bridal party. She did such a great job and she was convinced that she had married the ringbearer.

I'm not going to be any help, but wanted to say that you are doing a great job so far! Looks good!

I have a related question too... when you do the stitches by hand... do you use one of those circle things? I'm not up on my sewing technology... obviously... but those little holders you stick the fabric in to make it tight and easier to sew??? Can you do it without that? Or should I go get one?

I use one. They're pretty cheap and it makes it easier to see what you're doing and to make sure you don't catch any fabric from the rest of the outfit in your stitches.

To Rileymax: There are some applique links in the bookmarks in my siggy. I'm not sure how helpful they are, but you can check them out.

CUTE, CUTE, CUTE! That is a lot of shirring, it must have taken you forever, but it was well worth the effort!

Way back on page 600 or so someone asked about the pirate mickey heads.pirate:

Nanascustomcreations first posted these adorable little guys and I made a couple.

This is how I did it.

I drew my mickey head on the back of the Heat n' Bond lite.

I ironed the Heat n' Bond onto the black fabric.

Then I cut the shape out. Next I ironed the mickey head onto my outfit. Then I stitched around the outside. If your machine doesn't do a satin stitch you can use puffy fabric paint to seal the edges.

Then I cut out a rectangle for the scarf on Mickey's head. I hemmed it so it wouldn't fray in the laundry. Then I used a fabric marker to trace the round part of the top of mickey's head minus the ears. I stitched a gathering/basting stitch around where I had drawn with the marker. Pull the thread and it helps your fabric bunch up into a circle. fold the raw edges under.

THen I got a needle and red thread and sat on the couch and watched tv and hand sewed the scarfs onto the heads. If you make little stitches along the top you can't see them at all. Tie a knot in the end of the little scarf and there you have it.

Tomorrow I can post pictures. I need to get off to bed I gotta get up early to get the kids ready for school. :teacher: They start school early here in Georgia!

Hello all i just wanted to share some of my sewing tips i have recently learned..:rotfl:
1. Do not sew with a 2yr old monkey hanging under the table(tends to touch the foot pedal:laughing:
2.The seam ripper is not your enemy he is your friend but you can only pick him up 1 time after 3x's quit for the day:scared1:
3. Do not try to sew while 6 month old cocker spaniel puppy wants to play:dogdance:(pull mr seam ripper out)
4. do not try to sew while helping 10 yr old ,8 yr old and 6 yr old with homework:wizard: (a seam ripper does not belong behind your ear it is not a pencil):sad2:
5.and finally if your dress does not turn out the way you want, smile and make it a nightgown:headache: :goodvibes

LOL!! I love it! This applies to 1 year old monkeys and 2 year old miniature schnauzers as well. ;)

actually sews, "chain stich". It also has a foot pedal.

I found one of these a few months ago at a consignment store, never used for $10. My DD is in heaven, although she is scared to actually use it :rotfl:

My DD would love to have one of these! She hovers as I sew. Her job is to put the pins in the pin cushin. She is only three. Funny thing that is exactly what I did with my Mom!

I really want to get her the Easy Bake Oven. We were watching Rachel Ray last night. She told me she wanted to bring her chair to Rachel Ray's house and cook with her. It was so sweet I cried!

I really blew the budget on fabric and a new sewing machine last month! I am scared to even look! We had a yard sale last weekend. I did not put out any of the kids clothes. Someone gave me the idea to do really big lots on eb*y. So tonight I took a break from sewing. I ran out of black fabric anyway. I gathered up the girls clothes. I put 20 items in a lot. They are all Ralph Laruen so I hope it goes well!

I have not had good luck lately. Hopefully it will turn around!

Guess What???

I cut the minnie dot fabric tonight!!!!!! I almost could not do it! What is wrong with me!!!

I didn't own a serger until about 2 years ago when I started sewing for people other than my DD and me. Before then I would do a zigzag over the edge of the fabric where it wouldn't be encased. Now that I have a serger, I would miss it because it does save time and my seams look more finished. I still do all the seam stitching on my sewing machine first and then run them through the serger.

I love your work!! Your appliques are fabulous.

I do mine as a wedge. I like to have the skirt really full and if I did a rectangle the fabric would add more bulk at the waist then I like. I really like to develop patterns that have as little waste as possible. Here's a quick sketch of what the layout would look like.

thanks for sharing this technique. I did a strip skirt today and the gathers were so heavy! I wanted to do a drawstring waist with a big polka dot bow and it was impossible. I think with this technique my orginal idea would have worked!

One other Question for you-

I am going to do a patchwork skirt. What is a good size square to work with? Should I invest in a quilting cutting ruler or square? TIA!:cutie:

Hi Everyone,
I have been lurking for about a week now and decided to speak up now that I have photos to share...we'll see if I did it right! We leave in a week  and I was all set to do some iron on transfer shirts for the kids when I saw the "boutique" clothes. This thread has rekindled my fabric obsession :) As you will see, I went crazy with the Minnie heads...that's what DD wanted. I know they are simple compared to some of the incredible work here, but I've never been too good with patterns and I make jewelry and have a bunch of orders to fill right now. I attempted some hair bows for the first time too.
Here is the first one...hopefully...

Hello all, I am brand new to sewing and fairly new to the boutique thread but love everything I have seen so far. It has inspired me to create some outfits for my own kids for our up comming trip to disney. I had received a sewing machine for x-mas and have just started to use it this past two weeks. I have been working on pirate outfits for my DS and my DD. I would love to make a twirl shirt like the ones above. Lisa, I was wondering if you have a tutorial for making one or if you would be so kind to offer me more detailed instructions? Your work is beautiful as well as everyone else on these boards!!! I hope my outfits turn out and I will post them when I get them done. Thanks, Suzette:goodvibes
