Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 3

I finally have something I wanted to share even though it's not Disney. I want to thank everyone here for posting their creations and inspiring me. I've been making skirts for my best friend's DD who's almost 6. I brought them to church with me and she changed into the princess one right away. She was ecstatic! The horse one is super simple, one seam (because she has a 20" waist), a bottom hem and a casing. Anyone can do it! I wanted to try other things before I cut into my Disney fabric.

Allright, I am still trying to figure out this photobucket thing. I am not sure how to size the image, so hopefully this will not be too big.

These are the outfits I made the kiddos for the 4th of July. I figured I would begin practicing with appliques on something simple. DD loves her dress, and I am very happy with it. I started with a pattern, but quickly threw it out and made it up as I went, very fun. I made DS a matching shirt so he wouldn't feel left out. He promptly stained it. Oh well, at least I was able to snap the pictures first!

Whew! I have been reading and enjoying this thread and all of the gorgeous outfits. Now I finally am caught up :yay:

I am still undecided whether finding this thread was a good thing for me or a bad thing  As it stands I already have a time consuming hobby that I spend too much money on and has taken me years to get half way decent at :rotfl2: I show dogs

So now, since finding this thread, in the last week I am having a custom outfit made for my DN, I've been to Joann Fabrics three times racking up on ribbon and fabric, bought fabric at WallyWorld and bought the swirly Mickey fabric off of Ebay. Oh yeah, did I mention I don't know how to even operate a sewing machine :lmao: and I don't have kids :rotfl:

Ok, so my question is what sort of sewing machine would you recommend to an absolutely clueless newbie. I am looking for the easiest thing to operate the less it relies on me the better :rolleyes1 I'd like to try appliques and make cute outfits for DN and Disney up some outfits for myself.

I signed up for sewing classes :cheer2: Once I actually make something I will post pics. But I'm sure that won't be for a while :hourglass

For anyone who has the Brother 6000i, where on earth is the straight satin stitch?! I can't for the life of me figure out the number or find it in the book. I found the wavy one but would love to figure out the straight one so I can applique.

Thanks in advance!

Okay, I don't know if anyone completely answered you or not but here it goes...I've had my cs6000i for about 2 years now for doing the appliques I use the stitch number 04 (zig zag). On the right hand side of your LCD screen the Bottom number is the width of your zig zag from side to side the Top number is your thread density or how close your stitches are together...you will want this number to be like about .3 or .4 for a nice dense satin stitch. Experiment a little with a scrap of fabric alittle. Nana

wow - they are so cute!!!! how did you make the 2nd one? was it hard for a newbie??????? i'd love to take a try at something like that!!!

all right, this might sound silly - but how do you do an applique stitch on a sewing machine?

the_seamstress;20129506You can also try [COLOR="Blue" said:
(*CLICK ME*) FABRIC MOD PODGE[/COLOR], too ...
There's (*CLICK ME*) MOD PODGEs for everything & various finishes = matte, satin, glossy

The modpodge sounds cool, but how do you get the whole shoe to have the same finish? I guess you would have to paint the whole shoe with the modpodge then?

I recommend the Brother cs6000i I love mine!!! It is available at Walmart for $186.96(was there yesterday.

Utahmamma,

I must say I love the fabric you posted. I just returned from my trip to the "fabric mecca". We were visiting family, and I must say that I always plan a few days for 2 things, fabric stores and Tai Pan trading. I came home broke!:goodvibes, oh, and Cafe Rio. Yup, miss that too.

I stocked up. The fabric stores there are AMAZING, Oh and visiting family is great too.;)

Great job! I know what you mean about not wanting to cut into the Disney stash until your confident of what your doing. I had to hold my breath when I cut up my minnie dot fabric! :rotfl:

Well, that would be my sons too with the stains. Just something in the boy genes I suppose! Both outfits look terrific! Very patriotic! :cheer2:

I love the picture on front and the hitchhiking ghosts thing on the back is just too cute. Too bad none of mine are that size. ;)

First of all, I really like the modesty panel you added! And it really did turn out cute despite the "If you give a mouse a cookie" type drama to make it come out just right! Thanks for telling us the drama(s) of it coming to be! Now I feel like I'm ok! :rolleyes1

Yeah, well, you know, I meant to mess it up, just so everyone else wouldn't feel so bad. Yeah, that's just the kind of unselfish type person I am! :lmao: :rotfl:

Seriously though, thanks for the compliment! Arminda wore it to our family reunion today. She was so proud!! She is so much fun to make things for!

I love the whole thing together, but I also like the idea of being able to mix and match it up! Another amazing outfit "Tom"!

Here are the basic instructions for a top like the one shown a few posts back of my Snow White set. I included some simple illustrations for steps I felt might be the most confusing. I wrote the instructions assuming the person will know how to shir fabric with elastic thread and also do other sewing techniques. I would suggest trying this the first time using fabric you're not going to really miss if your first attempt doesn't work as planned. ;)

Oh my gosh!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is such a cool thing for you to do!
Theresa, I like the Pooh top. I'm about to use my Pooh fabric to make a test outfit for DD. It's on sale at Walmart now for $2 so if I mess it up I don't feel bad buying more ;)
After making Arminda's, I'm really really thinking I'd love one myself! Lydia wants one too. So, I need more fabric! My wonderful sister, Heather (hkite) gave me the fabric I used for Arminda's shirt.

UPDATE ... at the Plainwell store = There's not any red&big white dots (I got the last 4 yards, sorry  )
but There is several yards of the red sheer with little white dots ...

ATTENTION ALL FABRICOLICS :
(*CLICK ME*) HOBBY LOBBY's ONLINE COUPON

That's good 8-6 to 8-11-07

BEAUTIFULWhat a great choice of fabric and pattern!!!!!:thumbsup2 :goodvibes I like the added ribbon and it looks beautiful on. I am glad to hear that someone else had some problems with the pattern. I thought it was just me since it was my first one but it drove me nuts!!!! I guess now I will try another pattern!!!!

GREAT JOB---- IT'S GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the inspiration! As soon as I saw yours posted, I knew I had to make one for Arminda! I didn't find the directions on that shirt to be very clear at all. Did you get your daughter to wear the shirt?

I just calmly turned around & walked away. argue+brick wall=silly ...

I should remember that equation! I am constantly trying talk sense into brick walls. I call him my father in law!! :rotfl: No, actually I gave up on that one YEARS ago! Just smile and nod, just smile and nod!

Was this at the Westnedge store? I went in there looking for elastic thread, and I was met with blank stares. Finally though, someone knew what I was talking about, and found it for me. I'm not sure they worked there though.

I would like to share some pic of dresses I made but I can't load the pictures can any one offer me some help?

I think it's 10 posts you need. Get busy posting, we want to see pictures!

There are directions in my bookmarks site. It's called a twirly skirt. The link is in my signature, hkite's signature and on the first post of this thread. You might want to bookmark it, I'm always adding new links.

my Norah is starting to grow out of her 3t's. She's hit the golden Disney-Ride Height of 40 inches!

I loooooove mine too! It's practically ding-dong proof! It really sews smoothly. It's worth every penny.

Hey! We go to Cafe Rio a-LOT....I'm loving sewing with the new fancy-shmancy fabric! There IS a difference! I'm loving the look of my pillow-case dresses. They take no more than an hour to do from start to finish. I'll post em when I get my third one done. Laterish.

I do love me some Tai Pan Trading too. I reeeeeally need to save for Disney though! I need a money tree!

I finally finished the top to match dd's pants. I had jessica make the pants and then I just had to make a matching top! DD said no ruffles, rick rack, or appliques so I guess I've reached her quota for a while :rotfl2: But I am so excited that I have the complete outfit done!

BTW, dd wouldn't look away from the tv long enough to take pictures :headache:

all right, this might sound silly - but how do you do an applique stitch on a sewing machine?

Not a silly question at all. :) On most machines, it's just the zigzag stitch with your stitch length at the shortest setting you can use and still get the fabric to move. LOL Width varies based on your preference, skill level and other factors, such as the type of fabric you use.

One thing I recommend to anyone who will be doing much applique beyond basic shapes is to buy a spool of bobbin thread (it's labeled that way). It's thinner than basic sewing thread so you can get a LOT more on the bobbin which means less frequent bobbin changes. Also, because it is thinner, it doesn't add much bulk to the stitch so satin stitches are usually closer together.

I LOVE it! I also love that she cut you off the ric-rac, ruffles and appliques!:rotfl:

I found a quaint quilt shop with the most sumptuous fabrics! I wish you could feel these I picked out. Like a sateen, or a really high thread count sheet...very nice. They were 8.99-11.99 a yard so I only got exactly what I needed to do a couple pillowcase dresses. The ribbon I chose also has a vintage look to it in a cream color.

Oh, they don't look that special in these pictures. Pooh!

Oh, those are gorgeous! Great finds! I can't wait to see the finished products.
