Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 2

Wal Mart has ginormous activity books. I bought the Princess book. It has them all-the princesses that is. There's another book of just Ariel and one of Cars. The pictures look great for applique patterns-the faces are large so lots of detail. Some may have to be scanned and shrunk but I always find it easier to shrink because the pixels don't get all messy. Now, if I can only find Mickey and the gang!!

I do not own a serger. So when I do the zig zag stitch, I only stitch the one fabric with the raw edge? I'm not stitching it to the shirt? I do that next? And the stitch on the front of the garment would be seen on the shirt part? If I sew the raw edged up, the shirt will fold underneath.


I thought Picture 2 was the inside of the dress. It's the back of the outside of the dress? I just can't figure out what happened to your raw edges.



So the first row of stitching (the one I already stitched) you can't see by looking at the dress while someone was wearing it. But the second row you could see. It would be on the skirt (or ruffle), right below where the shirt and skirt meet. I think this completely contradicts the person I first quoted above. I THINK she said to sew the raw edge up, which would make the bottom of the shirt up, unless I misunderstood. Not saying you are wrong (or she is). I'm just trying to figure out what to do and think I have two different opinions. Which would be fine. There's more than one way to sew! (I just wish I knew one of them!)

Yes, picture 2 is the back of the dress on the outside where you can see.

It does completely contradict the previous poster. I just wanted to explain my photos. I posted them to be helpful and I didn't want you to be confused. I am curious to know if I am doing something odd? It is just the way I have added ruffles according to another pattern. THis pattern called for using bias tape around the whole dress and I wanted to add something to the dress.

I put my ruffle seams up too and then stitch across the top instead of over the ruffles. IMO, stitching on the top gives the ruffles more fullness instead of stitching them down. I dont' have a serger and I use a zig-zag stitch to finish all of my seams.

So I do the zig zag stitch, which is the same stitch I do when trying to applique. Except with this, I'm only sewing one edge of fabric. I'm not sewing it TO anything.

I, very quickly, updated my example pic to show what I think I should do. I added a zig zag stitch to the one fabric only and then stitched it to the shirt. I used black lines to show the zig zag and straight stitch. If I had this on, you would see the black line on the right side of the pink shirt.

Am I getting close?

It was not my intention to make you think you are doing anything odd. If you are, I wish I could do something odd, too. Your outfit turned out so cute! If I had a pattern, I probably wouldn't have all of these questions!

Ok - I finally got some time to do a little sewing and thought I would share, even though it's not clothing. I made these pillow cases for my best friend's first family trip to WDW. The three Winnie the Pooh are for my BFF, her DD (age 6) and her niece (teenager), the Pirates is for BFF's DH and the Mickey is for his BFF who is joining them on the trip. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to complete the bib and diaper-wipe case for her DD (1).

These are so cute! I have been looking for that pirate fabric. All of your fabrics are gorgeous. The eeyore, the pirate and the Mickey are my favorites. Great job thanks for sharing.

VERY CUTE!!!! All this talk of pillowcase dresses, I think these are the first pillowcases we've had! I keep looking at the Mickey fabric you used in your last pic. I want to buy some for DS1, but I have so much other fabric. I think DH would shoot me if I bought any more.

You are better than close. It sounds like you are there! Zigzag stitch the cuties fabric to cut down on the fraying.

Press the seam down and then stitch on the outside. You can stitch in the seam (where you can't see it very well) or over the edge of the cuties fabric/skirt. When you stitch on the outside you can see what it would look like "finished." It doesn't matter what it looks like inside only that it will be durable. It will be washed and worn by a child. Of course you want it to lay nicely.

To clarify, the cuties fabric is the skirt. The pink is the top. If I stitch the cuties fabric down, the stitch that you will see on the outside will be on the skirt. The shirt will lay flat and the cuties will fold down. If I stitch the cuties up, the stitch you see on the front will be on the shirt. The shirt will then fold up and the cuties will lay flat. OK, so after finding the shoes and experimenting with a few different kinds of paint here is what I came up with! The pictures are sort of bad, so I don't think they quite do them justice - I think they turned out cute!

DD is going to wear them for Pirate night on the cruise and for the MNSSHP. She has the cutest pirate tutu set, so of course, she needed matching shoes! I thought boots would be cute, but maybe too uncomfortable, so this was a good alternative!

I agree! Now my pillowcases don't come out nearly as cute, spill the beans how do you make them so nice?

I love the idea of names on them. My machine can do a simple alphabet and I put them on my dd5's pillowcases, she loves it.

So can you tell me how Pretty please?

Wahoo!!! Nice embroidery!!!!! I did Alice, but I purposely chose a side view so I wouldn't have to worry about getting the eyes symetrical! You did an AWESOME job on Ariel!!

I ended up using paint pens actually. I am not good with a brush, so I thought pens might be the way to go. The first ones I got didn't work - the paint just sort of faded into the canvas. I bought the "good" paint pens with a finer tip, and they worked much better.

I made another sample pair in a size 7....think I can sell them on eBay?

I think you can definately sell them on ebay! Very good job. I'd buy them for my DD but she has long past size 7
