Wahoo!!! Nice embroidery!!!!! I did Alice, but I purposely chose a side view so I wouldn't have to worry about getting the eyes symetrical! You did an AWESOME job on Ariel!!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the comments.
RE the fabric - I already have that one, so that's it. Can't buy more - DH has cut me off! :sad2: But, I could pair it with a solid - maybe do the print on the bodice and a solid for the entire skirt...

Here's 2 images I did in photoshop...

Does anyone have any tricks for sewing tule?

I am making a Tinker Bell costume for my DD's Kit. (18 inch American Girl doll.) I am having a little trouble with it. Any help would be great!

Did you figure it out? I haven't done the Tink outfit yet. The problem I have is our doll is only 14", so I have to take the patterns to a copy machine and shrink them. I hate to work with tulle. I think I have my Mom conned into putting it on the next twirly skirt for me. haha!! Let us know how your doing.

I took a few pictures while I was making the ruffle so you could see how it works. I'm sorry I can't remember who was asking but I thought some photos might help

This picture shows the two rows of stitching and I pinned it to the skirt right sides together. Then I stitch it on.

THis shows how I fold the ruffle down and then stitch again over the top.

This is what the back looks like when it is finished. You could trim it with pinking shears too.

I'm really studying this, trying to figure it out. I have a few questions and hope someone can help. I understand the first pic (I think). You just sew the ruffle onto the skirt, right sides together. This is where I usually stop and although my skirt looks good on the outside, it looks terrible on the inside. So, if I fold the ruffle down and stitch over the top (second pic), won't the stitch show thru? I mean, in the first pic, you can't see the stitch because you are sewing the backs together. Does that make sense? If I fold the ruffle down and stitch, I'm now stitching onto the front side of the skirt. And what happened to the raw edges in the second pic? Where did they go? Can someone help me?

I do mine a little different. In the second picture, your seeing the right side of the fabric. I have a serge and use that on all my raw edges. But, I also put my seam upwards, then when I flip it over, move my needle in the left position (so I can get closer to the seam) and stitch above the ruffle on the dress part. Is this making sense to you?

Okay, now that I have spent an hour going over the posts from the last day, here's my finished Ariel applique. I'm pretty proud of myself! Thank you so much LadyRob for the embroidery link!! It was super-easy to figure it out after I watched the videos on that site. Now I wish I wouldn't have put this on the back of a sweatshirt. I thought it'd turn out so bad I didn't want to waste a good shirt with it!

That is great! You did a wonderful job! She looks adorable. Ariel is my DD's favorite princess.

Hmm....I'm still confused. Thanks for trying to help. Here's a close up pic of the inside of my dress. I sewed the skirt onto a top. It should be the same as sewing a ruffle onto a skirt, right? I sewed the right sides together and that's it.

Now what should I do?

Your applique is beautiful! I'm so jealous!

No, I had to do some real work tonight. I make vintage reproduction Christmas houses from the 1940's. I was painting a bunch of pattern pieces tonight so I have not been able to sew. I want to finish up my painting so I can work on Tinker Bell. I am hoping the problem was my sewing machine. I had it for nine years and it could straight stitch or zig zag. It was time for it to go. Although, I am going to keep it to ruffle crepe paper.

What about this fabric? I'm making Easter dresses out of it and was considering making myself (pooh sized) a skirt or shorts to match the girls.

I am working with a pattern someone else suggested earlier. It is Butterick B4469. It is a wrap style top with lots of choices for sleeve length and ruffles. It is supposed to be "Fast & Easy" But it has 4 darts in it and I am reading the Dis boards instead of sewing. :confused3 I think that fabric would look cute in this style along with an accent color for a ruffle.

Ok. Here is my first Disney print top. My dd10 of course will not wear it to school because Pooh is too BABY for her. She will however wear it out with me!?!?! I love it though. It took me a long time but I will keep practicing. She is just out of the shower with pj bottoms on but I had to get it on here. :thumbsup2 The other is a twirly skirt I made from some fabric at Wallyworld. Of course it is too baby too:confused3 , so I will have to resize the elastic for a friend of mines daughter. --- Mindy

Where did you find the pattern for the shirt? My DD would love it.

Deb

I am so glad people are liking my shirt. I loved it. It is a Lizzy McGuire pattern from Simplicity #4568. Sz 8-16. It has 8 variations of that shirt. I bought it at Hancocks a few weeks ago when they were on sale for a dollar. HTH. It took me all day Saturday but it was my first time using a pattern.:flower3: Good Luck. ---- Mindy

Now what should I do?

Grab the section you JUST sewed... those raw edges that you think look messy. If you had a serger, you would sew over the edges to finish them off. I do not own a serger. I would take a zig zag stitch and go right down the edge to prevent some of the fraying. Then press the garment "open" so that the raw edges point UP. Then you can stitch on the front of the garment, right in that ridge where the seam is, and the raw/zigzaged edge is held up.

Does that help at all??

OK - this isn't remotely Disney (although, depending on the response, I may do it in a Disney fabric for our trip in Sept) ---
I made this sundress....

I love your dress in the photo. I'm pooh sized myself, should I mention that I'm sitting here eating my second piece of cornbread..:rolleyes1, anywho, I never wear anything that shows my arms...but when I'm on vacation, I always think, heck, I'll never see these people again, who cares, and I wear what I would wear if I were thin. Sleeveless dresses, skirts with heels, shorts...egag...the s word...LOL...
Seriously, I like the one in the photo, I'm not so sure about doing it in the mickey print. What about making a mickey head out of that and appliquing it to a white tee, and making some matching capris?

I agree with this! I think the sundress looks fine, but I think the capri set sounds really cute!

You're kidding, you thought it was going to turn out bad!! That's the most beautiful facework!!! I'm very impressed!!

I'm definitely liking the one with the blue!

I'll try to answer your questions. (I posted the pictures) If you look at the second picture you can see the stitching. I used pink thread though so it isn't really obvious. I think it adds a finished look to the front of the dress. I suppose you could stitch right where the two fabrics are joined. THis is sometimes called "stitching in the ditch". In the second picture the raw edges are under the edges of the pink fabric. I think when I took the pictures I took a picture of the finished edge of the back of the dress.

Picture 1 is the front of the dress, Picture 2 is the topstitching of the ruffle on the back of the dress and picture 3 is also the back of the dress.

I don't have a serger although I think it might be nice. If you have any more questions please ask!

Now what should I do?

I would press the seam down. Then stitch over the top. I think it makes the ruffle lay nicer. The hem of the shirt should be down like it would be if it was just a shirt. You can stitch along the top of the ruffle. I think it makes the ruffle a little stronger in case a child steps on it. It has two rows of stitching holding it on instead of just one.

I put my ruffle seams up too and then stitch across the top instead of over the ruffles. IMO, stitching on the top gives the ruffles more fullness instead of stitching them down. I dont' have a serger and I use a zig-zag stitch to finish all of my seams.

WOWEY ZOWEY!!!! You are one talented little sister! That is just amazing! Even if it WASN'T your first attmept at embroidery!

It has Lydia's stamp of approval as well. She says, "I like that one a lot better than the no face Ariel!" What in the world were you thinking putting it on the back of a sweatshirt????

You make something really cute and put your applique on the front!! Then, make another one so that Lydia and Tessa will match!

I do not own a serger. So when I do the zig zag stitch, I only stitch the one fabric with the raw edge? I'm not stitching it to the shirt? I do that next? And the stitch on the front of the garment would be seen on the shirt part? If I sew the raw edged up, the shirt will fold underneath.

I thought Picture 2 was the inside of the dress. It's the back of the outside of the dress? I just can't figure out what happened to your raw edges.

So the first row of stitching (the one I already stitched) you can't see by looking at the dress while someone was wearing it. But the second row you could see. It would be on the skirt (or ruffle), right below where the shirt and skirt meet. I think this completely contradicts the person I first quoted above. I THINK she said to sew the raw edge up, which would make the bottom of the shirt up, unless I misunderstood. Not saying you are wrong (or she is). I'm just trying to figure out what to do and think I have two different opinions. Which would be fine. There's more than one way to sew! (I just wish I knew one of them!)

THANK YOU everyone for trying to help me! Any more suggestions/clarifications?
