Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 2

I need a little help ladies. I am experimenting with an idea that I think everyone will love but I am having a problem figuring out a good pattern for a girls purse. I need something fairly simple, and small enough for a child. I found this one McCalls M3136 "E" but I am trying to find a few different ideas before I start the experiment. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Well, I was trying to be a good wife, you know DH is the jealous type. Here is what I bought last week and and DH was none too pleased. A girl can dream, right?

misc303.jpg

At least you have him in your living room, I'd be sleeping with it next to my bed. :rotfl: :lmao:

I don't sew but I bought DD a plain pillowcase and have been embellishing it with paint pens. I outlined a mickey head in the middle and on the trim around the open edge. I will probably add iron-on letters for her name as well.

We will be bringing it with us in Sept along with a Sharpie for the characters to sign. DD can keep it in her room/on her bed rather than stuffing it in the drawer.

Yeah!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE for helping me! One last question, I swear! Do I stitch the cuties fabric down or up? Or doesn't it matter? I seem to have gotten mixed responses. To clarify, the cuties fabric is the skirt. The pink is the top. If I stitch the cuties fabric down, the stitch that you will see on the outside will be on the skirt. The shirt will lay flat and the cuties will fold down. If I stitch the cuties up, the stitch you see on the front will be on the shirt. The shirt will then fold up and the cuties will lay flat. Does it matter?

I'm glad that you were able to finish your garment! I stitch my garments up b/c then it is just like a regular hem. However, stitching it down isn't a bad idea b/c if you needed to take the ruffle off afterwards, then the only thing that has the possibility of getting messed or leaving hole marks would be the ruffle and not the shirt. Just a thought.

And, the picture you did explaining how you were going to stitch/zig-zag was excellent. If I was better at photoshop, I would have tried to do this for you to explain. For me, when I zig-zag to finish the seams, I would have put the shirt seam in with the ruffle and had them both finished together to be more like 1 seam instead of two.

Can't wait to see a pic of the outfit!!!

Did you happen to notice if their girls' jeans were on sale this time? I was in just last week and all of the boys jeans were on a great sale, but nothing for girls. :confused3 I've been holding out for the girls' jeans to go on sale ( I have a couple of outfits in mind) but I don't want to miss it!

I'd like to know too, I checked last Sunday and they weren't. I don't want to make a trip without knowing!

They did have some girl jeans on the sale racks as well, but honestly I didn't check the prices. The boys jeans that I got were marked to $11.99, then $7.99, then $3.97.

I've done this a few times (not at WDW) and would advise you to get some fabric markers (I like FabricMate) instead of the sharpie. They won't bleed or yellow at the edges.

Also, if you can pick up a spring hoop it's an easy way to hold the fabric tight while they're signing.

Not too sure how this will work with Pluto and the rest of the characters with paws and/or obstructed vision, though.

I usually do 'custom' pillowcases, and don't have to worry about the marker bleeding through. If you can't deconstruct the pillowcase have a piece of paper or cardboard to prevent this as well.

Okay, now that I have spent an hour going over the posts from the last day, here's my finished Ariel applique. I'm pretty proud of myself! Thank you so much LadyRob for the embroidery link!! It was super-easy to figure it out after I watched the videos on that site. Now I wish I wouldn't have put this on the back of a sweatshirt. I thought it'd turn out so bad I didn't want to waste a good shirt with it!

WOW!!!! GREAT work! I'm SO impressed!!

Ok - I finally got some time to do a little sewing  and thought I would share, even though it's not clothing. I made these pillow cases for my best friend's first family trip to WDW. The three Winnie the Pooh are for my BFF, her DD (age 6) and her niece (teenager), the Pirates is for BFF's DH and the Mickey is for his BFF who is joining them on the trip. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to complete the bib and diaper-wipe case for her DD (1).

100_1290.jpg

Nice pillowcases! Love how clean and sharp the edges are! The dot eeyore is my fav, but they're all great!

OK, so after finding the shoes and experimenting with a few different kinds of paint  here is what I came up with! The pictures are sort of bad, so I don't think they quite do them justice - I think they turned out cute!

shoes-1.jpg

Wonderful job! I'm glad you found something that worked for you!

RE my dress - I'm going to wait until closer to the trip to make it (probably the Mickey on the bodice and blue on the skirt) because we're trying to lose some weight and I don't want the arm holes gaping open. That part was hard to fit in the first place! (major gaping using the correct size pattern!)
I liked the idea of the dress in all Mickey and a solid color top over it, but I don't want the extra layers in the Florida heat. (going in Sept). The pattern actually has a short jacket (ends where the bodice ends) but it still falls in the too warm in FL category. (It's Simplicity 3769 if anyone is curious) It wasn't a hard pattern (other than it not fitting under my arms right) and I didn't put the zipper in like it said - I just stitched up the back. I figure as long as it can go over my head without it, why stress over a darn zipper!!

ok everyone, I am editing pics now! by tonight there will be a link to all our custom vacation photos! so keep watching!

Lori

I wanted to share some photos of the apron top showing how I cut the pattern. This way the princesses will be right side up at the bottom of the front and back.

Thanks for showing this. I can't wait to see the finished product. I must say I am loving these pictures. Still waiting for a zipper tutorial though...:rolleyes1 J/K. Those things just intimidate me so much.

Well I did it! My first sewing attempt in 20 yrs. Please be honest!!!

Very Nice!!

Have fun sewing today everyone!! I have a test to study for as well as two more outfits to sew and then I'm finally caught up. Yea!!

Yikes!! How do you do it all? I'm loving the summer because there is no school stuff and dance lessons, etc, and I still feel like I can't get it all done sometimes.

Does anyone have any tricks for sewing tule?

Good luck with the tulle. I haven't started any projects with it yet, so I have no advice to offer.

FINALLY after talking about it, I have an idea of what we are going to do to spruce up our Cruella shirt. First off, I completely removed the bottom from the bodice because we didn't like the way it was put together.

Then we tweaked it a little more & we were racking our brains to come up with a saying for Cruella -- all of a sudden DD comes up with "Dalmations -- Cruella Likey" I about fell off my chair laughing!!! I absolutely *love* it. This only makes sense if you watch Hannah Montana and we watch that constantly. It was a saying from one episode that we have sort of picked up in the house but it just fit my DD's personality *so* perfectly. It may not make sense to anyone else but we get it.

We're big HM fans here, too, so I get it, too. Very cute. I can't wait to see the revised villian shirt.

Speaking of Hannah Montana...... I put this in another post, but I think it must've gotten lost in my mile-long multi-quote reply post; so I'll ask again. I bought a cute pale pink t-shirt a while back. It is a size 12 or 14, so it'll fit an older girl. My dd loves Hannah, too, so I want to do something for her. I know I can't applique HM, but I was thinking that I could do something that would just "suggest" Hannah -- like her SHHHHhhhhhhh!!! sign on the 1st (I think) CD. You know just a hand with the pointer finger up and a pair of red lips. However, I don't think many people would get that, so I may have to add "Hannah Montana" as well. What do ya'll think? I'm still unsure.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the pattern for this top? I have the stripwork pattern but I'd like to start with just a single fabric first.

BTW--I grabbed this off our photobucket link--it's adorable! Bravo to the seamstress!

BLAKELY

Bravo indeed. How did I miss this top the first time through? Sorry. I can't help with a pattern though.

I have been watching this thread since May, and have decided to finally post. You all do WONDERFUL work! I was inspired enough to make the Mickey head shirts for my kids before our first trip in May. DH and I are going next year by ourselves :goodvibes , and I was thinking of making the pink guitar RNR shirt for myself. What do you all think? Is that too juvenile? lol ..... To the OP of that shirt, did you make the applique yourself or buy it? TIA!

First off, welcome to the addiction. I'm the maker of the RnRC shirt. I think it could work for an adult. My dd will wear it with a glittery pink scooter -- if I ever get it finished. Ugh!! I think it all depends on what you wear it with. I think the lace trim on the bottom edge of the shirt is young and wouldn't go in that direction, but we see adults with guitars on their shirts all the time. My dd's shirt will be big on her, too, and a tighter shirt will be more grown up. Just remember to account for the shirt stretching when you are sewing on the ribbons and such. Now, about the applique.... that was actually an old t-shirt that my dd loved. She wore it all the time and got paint, markers, pen marks, and other stains on it that I couldn't get out, and I wouldn't let her wear it anymore. I simply trimmed the guitar out and threw the rest of the shirt in the trash. I knew I'd come up with some use for it, and that shirt was it. I also bought some of those iron on rhinestones at Wal-Mart thinking I would try to recreate the guitar. I don't think it would be that hard. However, a couple of weeks ago I found the same shirt in our local thrift store and I bought it, so I do have another one. If you want it, please PM me.

Okay....here is my very first attempt of an applique. I chose Piglet because it matched my DD's skirt and shoes...hahahaha!

Very cute. Nice job. I love your dd's shoes BTW. When I was in high school (about 100 years ago), I decided I wanted a pair of purple hightops. However, at the time, you could only buy them in white, black, and navy blue. Anyway, I bought 2 pairs of white ones and dyed one pair purple and the other pair pink. I wore them everywhere and got tons of compliments. I even wore them on a trip to NYC and wouldn't you know it? Not quite a year later they started coming out with all the different colors. My mom laughed when I dyed those things and was embarrassed to be seen with me in them, but she once said that she wondered if somebody saw me walking around NYC wearing them and took my idea to make them different colors. She was joking of course, but she couldn't believe that there were other people wanting to wear bright colored hightops. I must say though, your daughter looks much cuter in hers than I did in my "hand-crafted" ones.

Boy, am I chatty today, or what?? :rotfl:

A frustrating day of fabric shopping! I have called every Joann's within a 1 hour radius trying to find that mod circle mickey/minnie print - no luck! Don't you hate it when you get your mind set on something and then can't make it happen!

I'll check mine next time I go. I saw it there a month or so ago in the clearance section. Didn't get it because I didn't know what to do with it.

After seeing everyone's great applique outfits I decided to give it a try. It's a Pirate Mickey theme.
DSC03840-1.jpg

Very nice. That is so cute. Man, pirates are huge this year, huh?

I can make doll clothes for some unknown reason. I made DD Alice dress and it turned out really well. I have enjoyed sewing so much lately. It has been very theraputic. I am an artist an do very tedious work. I make vintage reproduction Christmas decorations. Here is a sample of my work
Chloe_s_Cottage_22-250x166.jpg

I just bought a new sewing machine yesterday. It was from Target and it is a Singer. I am happy with it because it will be great for my purpose.

You do beautiful work. Good luck with the sewing.

OK - this isn't remotely Disney (although, depending on the response, I may do it in a Disney fabric for our trip in Sept) ---

I made this sundress.

You did a beautiful job on the dress, but like the others have mentioned, I don't know about using the Mickey fabric for an entire dress. I was going to suggest doing the bodice in the Mickey fabric and then the skirt in a solid red (if you can find the exact same red), blue, or even denim. I see you did that later thogh. I really like it, and I think it would be perfect for a Sept trip.

...here's my finished Ariel applique. I'm pretty proud of myself! Thank you so much LadyRob for the embroidery link!! It was super-easy to figure it out after I watched the videos on that site. Wow!! Very nice work. I can't believe that is a first attempt. So tell me, anything advice for those of us who haven't done this yet? Would it be easier to do the face before putting it on the shirt? Very nice though.

These are great. I love the small accent stripe between the 2 fabric. It gives it a very polished and professional finished look. Very nice.

OK, so after finding the shoes and experimenting with a few different kinds of paint  here is what I came up with!

Very cute!!! You'll have to post of pic of the entire ensemble.

I've also read that you can put freezer paper in the pillowcase to help keep it from bleeding through.

Have a great day everyone. My youngest is telling me it is Baby Alive's birthday, so we have to make a cake and have a birthday party for her. That means I may not get much sewing done. Oh well..... they're only young once, right?

My Mom introduced me to the placemat purse a few weeks ago. They are so adorable and very easy to make. Here is the website:

Everyone's been posting some great things! Love the pillowcases - they all look very crisp!
The Ariel applique is awesome - such a great job on her face! Love the sundress, too - I think it looks great on! Keep up the good work, ladies!

I made DD an apron top last night - it's not disney - I wanted to see how it would turn out first. I love it! It's such a cute style, I think. She may end up getting several apron tops!

The photos are a little blurry, I think one of two certain kidlets may have been turning dials and/or pushing buttons.

Would you mind sharing the pattern. I love it. I also really like that is has room to grow!

Sure - it's Butterick 5019. Yeah, I made her a size bigger so hopefully she'll be able to wear it next year.

Thanks for posting this, LadyRob. Brings back memories -- made tons of those purses back in the 80s and I saw that the handles are back in the stores again.

I have been making "carry bags" about this size for my 2 DGDs and use grosgrain ribbon for the handles.

The pillowcases are great. They were the second item I made using Disney fabric, after the aprons, a few years ago. I had never considered making garments out of Disney fabric -- wow, what I have learned these past few months!

Ok. Here is my first Disney print top. My dd10 of course will not wear it to school because Pooh is too BABY for her. She will however wear it out with me!?!?! I love it though. It took me a long time but I will keep practicing. She is just out of the shower with pj bottoms on but I had to get it on here. :thumbsup2 The other is a twirly skirt I made from some fabric at Wallyworld. Of course it is too baby too:confused3 , so I will have to resize the elastic for a friend of mines daughter. --- Mindy

Oh I have this Pooh fabric, and really like someof the outfits made with it, but this top....I ADORE!!!!!!

I love this outfit.... I bought the apron shirt pattern and these exact fabrics from Hobby Lobby with the intentions of making the top exactly the same and adding the stripe as a ruffle to the bottom of the top (well, I am making it a dress). Now I need more striped fabric. I LOVE the pants. You did a great job.

I will post a pic of my DD in hers when I get it finished. BTW- my fabric is still in the back of my van hiding from DH. He made me surrender the debit card and take a vow to not enter another fabric store until I use the fabric I have. Good thing cash can not be tracked rotfl:

I made this sundress. I'm fat. No mincing words. Is this something I can get away with or just shouldn't wear? I mean, I'm big no matter what I wear, but does this really look bad? No platitudes please - HONEST opinions. I won't have hurt feelings. (well, truthful facts won't hurt...name calling would make me cry -- note that I called the picture mooooo :rolleyes1 )

I'm posting the link to the picture because I'm to embarrased to have it posted here.

If I make it in a Disney fabric it will be this one:

I just deleted this because basically everyone said what I did. Sorry
