Lovin' all the new stuff and everyone has done a great job!!

Wondering something else....
I know there was/is a big meet up at the Hancock in Michigan (I hope I got that right) and there was tons of people that did/are going. I thought it might be fun to know where everyone lives -- if you don't mind sharing. Just recently I found a couple of people involved in this thread that live within 45 minutes of me. You never know, there might be even more people that could do a 'meet-up' on here. And, it might be a way of people getting there hands on some that hard to find material everyone keeps searching for.

Anyways, I live in Atlanta!

We are in Hot Hot Hot AZ! Anyone else in AZ

I used McCalls 5088 to make this. . .

Help me, Aimeeg, Help me!!!! I'll PM you

UGH! I am needing help with ideas for this fabric:
IMG_0145.jpg

Can someone help?

How about one of those patchwork skirts? Along with a peasant style blouse?

You could applique a Mickey head on a top too.

Do you have a lot of that fabric? It looks like a lot of animal prints in pastel shades right?

HELP - I NEED SOME IDEAS!

I just bought this pillowcase on eBay, but I need some ideas on what to do other than a regular pillowcase dress.

pillowcase.jpg

I was thinking something like this below. Can someone explain how the ruffle is done at the top, in very basic terms!? Like a casing and you pull elastic through maybe? And then just bias tape around the arms.

pillowcase2.jpg

Any other ideas/suggestions etc would be great! I just thought the fabric was cute and would make a cute outfit. Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm very new to this -- I've been reading this thread for about a week and decided to join. I am looking for the fabric with "hello" in different languages on it. I just bought the Alexander Henry "Smiles Around the World" fabric and I know from looking at the good ideas on here that the "hello" fabric would be perfect with it. If someone could just tell me the name/designer that would be great!

That is great! Nice work on the applique. Can you tell me more about a quilter's foot? I am assuming this is an attachment for the machine. Do you have a picture? I started to do some very basic appliqueing but I would like to move on to Ariel--and the details of her face seem intimidating. Thanks!

The overalls are great. How did you attach the material to the top? Did you use a satin stitch for the material then added the applique later?

My second attempt at applique.

I love the little girl applique. Nice job on all the shirts!

That top looks like it has shirring (sp??) at the top. There are directions on how to do this on the bookmarks page. I read through the directions and it didn't seem too hard. That top looks like it just has a few rows of shirring. I think you can manage it just fine. Great pillowcase! Please post a pic once you are finished!

Good night everyone,
Blakely

I would cut out some of the pieces and applique them on something. Maybe you could do a skirt with some of it and applique the pieces onto a shirt.

That pillowcase dress is pretty easy. Have you ever sewn a curtain? It is similar to that. You just sew a casing bigger than your elastic. Then sew along the top to make the ruffle. Put the elastic on a safety pin and pull through and pin. Sew one side of the elastic down, then the other side. Then you go around with your bias tape. I did one recently where I put the ribbon in the same slot as the elastic and sewed it down that way. (I had run the bias tape around the arms before I sewed the casing.) Here is a pic of it again.

I appliqued the Black Mickey Head to the red fabric. I ironed Ultra Bond Lite to the black fabric. Then I cut out the Mickey Head. I used Tear Away Stabilizer under the red fabric and then stitched around the Mickey Head. My machine isn't very sophisticated so I had to go over it twice to get it to look like that.
Then I just sewed the red fabric onto the overalls. It was relatively easy. If you need more detailed instructions I can give them.
That's it!

Well, I finished my daughter's first day of kindergarten outfit. I let her pick the fabric (frogs!) and the pattern (skorts) so I think she'll be happy with it. I took a frog and sewed him onto some green fabric and then ironed that on and stitched around with ric rac for the t-shirt. I couldn't decide what to do. I had initially thought I wanted an appliquéd frog, but I am pretty sure that is outside my skill level. This was easy and cute too. Hopefully tomorrow I'll take a picture of her in it.

This is adorable. My DD would love this. She loves frogs and fishing and outside type activities.

I'm back on post #6961 trying to catch up from where I've been out of town... I hope to be caught up tomorrow!! Until then, I have a few comments...

Good job Amy!! What pattern did you use for the top?

daisylou - Adorable Peter Pan!!

mcraft17 - Maybe you could do the detachable ribbon that you can change with velcro.

PiperPizzaz - I love the photoshop pics, especially the Mickey red w/buttons and gloves on the pockets!

heath-and-javens-mom Very cute pirate outfits/pjs and clever idea about making pants and shorts!

Oh gosh, I'm in awe....can you tell me more about how your ribbon organizer works??? I've been doing bows lately and I've kept it pretty organized but what love it more organized and accessible...thanks
BIG RIBBON RACK
It's hard to take a picture of it, because of where it sits ...
It's by a rounded doorway (the black thing there is a curtain), and there's a wall/work counter in the way for me to back up any further.

My ribbon rack is two 2by4's, 16" apart = they are supports for the big shelf, that runs all around the room, up by the ceiling) ...
At first, I was going to put peg board on them & use peg hooks to hang things.
But I thought = I could drill a shallow hole in one board & a matching hole all the way through the other one (level/horizontal with each other)
THEN run a wooden dowel through the "complete" hole (that faces the room), + through spools of ribbon, then sit the end of the dowel in the shallow hole on the other post (by the wall) ...
I tried it, and it worked! I was sooo excited! :woohoo:
So, I repeated this all the way up to the top = tada.

These two boards were painted white BEFORE I ever drilled the holes (it doesn't work well to drill then paint).
To cover the holes (facing into the room) I used white duct tape strips. (don't press it down hard)
I pull off the tape when I need to move a dowel. :)
& put it back in place, to make it look pretty again when I'm done.
(This also stops my girls from pulling out my dowels.) :rolleyes1
I use narrow clear tape to affix the stray ends of the ribbons on the spools.
(I try not to use pins on them anymore, since the 3yr old loves to spin the ribbon spools.)
You can use the ribbon straight from the rack OR pull out the dowel to get the whole spool.

CLICK a PIX to Enlarge it.

Since the big upper shelf was made to hold bolts of fabric = I made it with 2x4 frames underneath (for strength), so you can see these UNDER this shelf. (see the pix = I'm looking UP at that point) ...
Hey! More room for more holes & dowels = I hung my elastic spools from these :)

A friend of mine, needs something like this, so I've been thinking about this more ...
I wonder IF something like this, can be made from of a room separator? like fold-up wall partitions?
She has a semi-free corner in her work room... using two panels would work great for that corner.
Three panels would be better for stability, though.
IF I can not make that work out, I'll try to make a hanging rack for her closet.
IF I make either of these for her = I'll make sure to take pictures of it & share them here!

!IDEA! You know those roll-under-the-bed plastic containers with lids?!?!
I bet you could do this with one of those!!
Don't push too hard when drilling the holes, so the plastic doesn't crack from the pressure.
You could use "cap nuts" for the dowels' ends = screw them off & on, as needed
IF anybody makes one = I wanna see it, ok?

It was hard to describe my big ribbon rack. I hope you can understand it.

Yep and they are SUPER easy!!!! I did them b/f trying applique. The only challenge is figuring out the fabrics and how you want them to lay and layer.

So that I would have room to play, I fused Wonder-under to larger pieces of fabric. Then I decided what shapes I wanted them to be and cut them out. I started with the larger basic pieces, fused the on, sewed about 1/4" away from the edge and then filled in with the other fabrics in the same process.

I am away from home right now, but when I get home, I'll take pictures of what I did. I did a pair of jeans and also a jean jacket (in the same fabrics, but not to wear together) and then a peasant top to match. I love the decoupage method!! You have no edges to worry about b/c you WANT them to fray.

I'll be back home Wednesday. I'll take pics then.

Until then, these are the Minnie overalls I did with that method... (I've shared them b/f, but so you don't have to go look for them...)

Someone was talking about custom autograph books. These are two that I made for a friend after I made some for my kids. I don't have pics of my kids with me... I can take pics of the Buzz Lightyear and Tink ones I did for my kids once I get home.

Love your overalls!!! They are Fab!!! The autograph books are awesome too!!!:thumbsup2

I got fed up with just sewing out of a roll-out/fold-away-desk ...
so, I took over an "extra" room ... :)
It was small, so it got filled up very fast ...
I got fed up again.
I emptied the room, made new desks & shelves, put it all back ...
NOW, it's fine. =)
I just hope we don't have to move anytime soon! ;)
(this is a 12'by12' room)

"pack-rat with style" is what my best-friend calls it.

** added later**
Somebody asked how I did all this. Here's How.

I LOVE your orgnaization!!! Whoo hoo!!!!

Here are my overalls I created. I like how they turned out  I think I will have to go back to Walmart and get another couple pairs to alter for Animal Kingdom! The applique isn't too bad once you get the hang of it.

After they took them off I added one more patch to the back of DD's.

Closer view of DD's

I made a little handkerchief for each of them. DD's is poking out of her pocket.

If you copy these I would be extremely flattered. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

These are really fun!!! Nice job!
