Here is my version of the poodle skirt. I think it came out pretty good. But I do wish I had left the overskirt a little longer. Can't say I enjoyed making Pluto!! But I made it through. Went with Grey because MomMom wore a grey poodle when she was a teen. While I made it, Mom kept telling me that was not a poodle skirt!! I told her it's the new, updated version. I think I'll have Kirsta wear it to MGM, I should see if we can get an ADR at the 50's resturant.

Love both of these. I think the short poodle skirt is perfect especially if you're going in the hotter months. A full length skirt gets extremely warm, we used to have to wear them during rush, not fun.
Love the back of the Cinderella dress. I'm sure she will get tons of extra special attention.
:upsidedow (my DS3 picked out the smilie)

Is this better? Now you can see how bad I am at it. I used a coloring book picture. Used a small zig zag. For the lines in his face and legs, I used a quilting foot on the machine, so I could do lines "freehand".

I did the ruffle the easy way. Have you seen the rolls of tulle that is about 6 inches wide? I used the ruffler and just did the whole roll. Then I started to sew onto the pedicoat. When I got to the end, cut it off. Second row of the ruffle was up higher (the hem was at the seam line of the lower ruffle). I had some left over, so if I made a bigger size, it would still work.

I got fed up with just sewing out of a roll-out/fold-away-desk ...
so, I took over an "extra" room ... :)
It was small, so it got filled up very fast ...
I got fed up again.
I emptied the room, made new desks & shelves, put it all back ...
NOW, it's fine. =)
I just hope we don't have to move anytime soon! ;)

"pack-rat with style" is what my best-friend calls it.
I am SPEECHLESS, except to say...

I LOVE IT!!!! You are so awesome! I don't (YET) have quite as much as you, but I love, love, love organized spaces! I'm thinking an armoir refurbed to hold labeled bins for now. I have tons and tons of jeans that have been cut up into squares and lots of yarn and flannel and quilt batting. I have a quilt stand and supplies but that's the extent of my collection thus far.

Can I just say, I wan to be you when I grow up! (I'm almost 40 so I'm probably older than you, but still) :cloud9:

You are totally the most stylish pack rat ever!!!

I am still reading all the new posts but . . . How is posting a picture of my child wearing a handmade outfit any different then posting a gymboree outfit? I do not understand how the artist can dictate where her creations shown.

I am an artist too. I can't dream of telling people where they can display my Christmas decortations. In cottage industries word of mouth counts for a lot!!!

I can't say the reasons that the creator of the outfits has, but I would suspect that she doesn't want her work copied.

And it's one thing to display your Christmas ornaments it's another to post pictures of them on a board full of people who also make ornaments and are quite talented and handy and could see the ornaments you posted and then make their own.

I don't think your a pack rat at all...just well prepared and organized! ;)

Here are my overalls I created. I like how they turned out  I think I will have to go back to Walmart and get another couple pairs to alter for Animal Kingdom! The applique isn't too bad once you get the hang of it.

After they took them off I added one more patch to the back of DD's.

Closer view of DD's

IMG_4933.jpg

I made a little handkerchief for each of them. DD's is poking out of her pocket.

If you copy these I would be extremely flattered. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

These turned out so cute!! I love the 'kerchiefs hanging out of the pockets. I wish DD would wear overalls! I'm going to make a few more pairs for DS.

Here's more helpful organizing ideas ...
CLICK the pixs to ENLARGE
I used to keep all my fabrics in bins (I still do, yes, there's MORE!) ...
I got tired of sorting though folded fabric piles
IN & OUT of bins, back & forth, refolding, even just to SEE what was in it = you know what I'm talking about. grrrr... THIS was when I started doing my favorite "MINI-BOLTS"

cardboard, cut to fit * cheap ...
+ I suggest you use ELASTIC, sewn or tied into "bands", instead of rubber bands. I had a problem with the rubber "deteriorating" (whatever that was, it was nasty & sometimes ruined the fabric) ...
I LOVED THIS! You can just open the tub, see ALL the fabrics, get what you wanted & put it back WITHOUT all the old hassle! ... you can even put fabric BITS in ziplocks & slide that under the band = less mess. :)
"MINI-BOLTS" also work on shelves AND in armories ! :)

I used to use big ziplocks ALOT (even in my bin/tubs), but they SLID all over (annoying) ... now, they don't. :)

in an extra closet or on a bar somewhere = BIG ziplock bags attached to hangers. ... this is great for basements & garages, so that they don't get yicky or musty ... I suggest NOT pointing the bags down  and use slider bags = they are the easiest.
Hope that helps. :)

I am getting ready to make some overalls for our Garden Grill dinner for Ds's 2nd bday. This gives me some good ideas. I was wanting to use some of the handkercheifs (sp?) and maybe peice a farmer mickey on it but, maybe I will just do a regular mickey like yours! So cute!!!!!!

These are too cute. I love the bandana type fabric. I keep seeing it at the fabric store and want to buy it, but resist because I don't know what I would use it for. We are doing CRT instead of Hoop Dee Doo. Great work.

SallyFromDE and The Seamstress - I just got it to work! I've got scraps all over the floor - but I figured it out! WOO HOO! I think the ruffler is gonna open up a whole new world to me! Let the sewing marathon begin!

Adorable! I especially love the li'l piece coming out of the pocket - I noticed it right away. So cute! Great work! Are the kids wearing them to HoopDeeDoo?

How did you make the bag? It's adorable!!

Quick answer is 4 pieces of fabric cut to the same size (this bag I cut the sides at a slight angle). Sew outside pieces together sides and bottom (this bag had fusible fleece lined to outside fabric to make it stand up) , then T the bottom, same for inside lining (except don't close up the bottom all the way). Attach straps to outside fabric. Put outside fabric right side out inside lining fabric (right side in) and stitch top. Pull outside part thru opening of lining at bottom. Sew up bottomof lining. Sew the top at about 1/4 inch allowance to keep lining inside bag.

If you would like further instructions PM me.

There are lots of purse patterns out there but once you do one it is pretty easy to figure out.
Have fun.

Hi everyone!! I love all of the new creations. I haven't done a pair of overalls, but they are very cute.
I have a request...yes I know...the queen of sewing needs some help...LOL
I'm trying to find the link to embroidery that someone posted earlier. LadyRob, I think posted it.
I have a cute little Tinkerbell with no face. :rotfl: and my embroidery skills, are hmmm...let's see....uh, NONE!:lmao:
I don't want to surf through the postings to find it, but I will if I have to, but any help is appreciated.

Or...Butterick "Slow and Confuzzeling" #B5019

Here's Norah wearing her newest home-spun monstrosity. I LOVE the fabric and it does fits perfectly. I haven't decided to make it a crop pant or capris. Maybe the crop since fall is coming. I'll add the raspberry trim at the bottom.

Although in real life she wears a 4T, the size for patterns is 3. This little detail will be helpful.

Today I learned how to use double folded 1/2" bias tape. I learned how to properly put in elastic so it won't twirl up on me.

I learned how to use fusable interfacing. I also did my very first button holes!

May I just add, it was Norah's turn to say family prayers tonight and she thanked God for her "new outfits". I'll remember that when she's a know-it-all teenager!!!

Soooo sorry you cant see the bow in the back! It's looking invisible, but IRL it's fine![/IMG]
Fantastic job! That fabric is wonderful! She looks adorable!
does anyone's back hurt when they sew tooo much! ugghh I think I need a massage!
I have been sewing a few more outfits but want to get the kids in the pictures. so Hopefully will be able to post in the morning!
Lori
Me too! And, then my carpal tunnel starts hurting too.
I read somewhere = if you can tilt your machine a tad bit UP in front = it can help with that. So, that you don't have to slump to see.

When I was pregnant, I could hardly sew it hurt so bad to sit there like that ...
I raised my worktables a bit, lowered my sewing chair + got a couple spot-light work lamps.
Wow! that helped TONS :)
That was 5 years ago & I still have them that way. :)

Thanks for the tip!

Here is my latest outfits for my girls and the bag I made to match.

Very cute! And, I'm jelous of your sewing machine!
Thanks for responding, she did all that, but it didn't work!

I am right there with you!! I have posted tons of bows and necklaces that I made and my 6 year old DD will never wear! It is definately heartbreaking! But I say pack it anyway and tell her that is the only thing she has to wear that day. As I tell my daughter when we are on a trip and she doesn't like any of the clothes I have packed, wear this or go naked, I don't care!;)

I have come to the conclusion that some machines just DONT do shirring! I sent my stuff to my sister to do for me! I got so frustrated with my machine!

"Oh no, do I have to look cute, again?" It is so tough being 6!!:rotfl2:
That is too funny!

you all make such amazing outfits!

i'm inspired to learn how to sew now! any advice for beginners? i have no kids to sew for (except maybe some cousins) but i could totally use curtains for my new apartment! any suggestions (books or websites to go to for learning the basics?) thanks!

maybe, if i start now, by the time i have kids i'll be able to sew some of this stuff! :rotfl:

Check out the bookmarks page in the origianal post of this thread and in my signature. There are learn to sew sites listed in the tips and techniques section.
