This was me on one of my trips, too. I saw one woman decked out in a lime green disney tee and her Disney crocs, and she even had a lime green Baggallini. I did the Meet the Focker thing and she looked almost scared, so I said, "What? You don't DIS?" I mean, honestly, with all that stuff how could she not be a DIS Board member, but she had no idea what I was talking about. I told her about the boards and she said she'd have to look us up after her trip.

This happened to me to as well but not with the official greeting. I saw a family in matching lime green shirts that they made themselves. I thought, this has to be a disboard member so I talked to them. They had no clue. I think they thought I was loopy. How dare they use lime green and not be dis'ers... didn't they get the memo???
:rotfl:

Dena, do you do all your own applique from scratch, so to speak? Do you use a regular machine, or do you own an embroidery machine?

I have been doing bask applique and that "decoupage" method where you allow the fabrics to get funky and fray around the edges. I really want to step it up and attempt more intricate applique, but am nervous.

I am working on an Alice in Wonderland outfit, in my mind, for my daughter. I REALLY want Alice standing with her hands on her hips. I'm afraid that I will pull my hair out on the small curves and will I get the face okay? (I think I will use fabric markers for the face.)

I'd love any suggestions you had!

Your daughter is precious in her monkey and Monsters Inc. outfits, by the way....

I APPLIQUED!! :cheer2: :sulley:

It's not great, but I'm going to post a picture anyway. This is the first time I've tried to applique. I was pretty pleased that it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I think it looked better before I tried to go around Nemo. Black thread would have looked better, too. But, it was a learning experience. The model is my incredibly sweet 1 year old son, Sawyer.

I think you did a great job for the first time.... I am so afraid to even try!

Oh my gosh! I finally made something. I've been having someone else making all my kids Disney outfits for our trip in September. I saw CastleCreations Walmart dress and thought I"d just shamelessly copy her idea. Hey....imitation is the best form of flattery. LOL! I went to Walmart, found the dress and Ric Rac, then went to Hobby Lobby and got the Disney scrapbook sticker. When I got home I remembered I had this Minnie head. Just glued everything on and it's done. So simple. Thank you CastleCreations for your awesome ideas!

This is what I came up with. I think I'm going to have my daughter wear it with black capri leggings. She's 7 but very tiny. I could only find the dress in a 4T so it'll fit more of a halter top.
DSC03765.jpg

I just wanted to say that I think this outfit turned out REALLY cute!!! That was a very creative idea to put that Minnie head on there!

Ok, either my posts keep getting lost, no one wants to share their tips for fear that I might outdo them on ebay... hang on... :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: ... Ok, I'm back... or everyone is underestimating their talent and thinks they can't help me with my overalls. So, here's my questions for the last time:

1 - When covering the bibs on overalls, what is the best way to deal with buttonholes? Make them on the custom, or put the custom below them?

2 - What's the best way to do ruffles on pant legs? Should I sew them upsidedown on the outside of legs and let them flip over and down? OR, should I just sew them on the inside? I'm afraid if I sew them on the inside they will be too long.

Even if you've never made custom overalls, and you have an opinion on how to deal with these issues would you please tell me. DD is anxiously waiting to see her Donald Duck overalls and they've been sitting on my desk since Tuesday just taunting her!!!

Ruffles are a personal opinion as to what you like better as far as looks. I like them both just the same honestly.

Buttonholes, I am not sure what you are asking about. I don't cover the top buttons, but do cover the holes down below, usually the first. I do not buttonhole anything, it will button behind the fabric.

Hope this helps. This is the first time I have seen the question, with the thread moving so fast I don't get to read all!

Hi y'all!! I have learned so much from this thread. I've been very inspired. I started collecting fabric last week and have a lot of projects "dreamed up"!!
I wanted to share a pic of the shirts I made for DD and DS for the 4th. I have never appliqued so I did DS' tie with very "open" zig zag. I'm going to start practicing my appliqueing so I can do some of the cute overalls. I also want to try my hand at a patchwork circle skirt!!
:scared1:

PLEASE HELP ME W/ SEWING PROBLEM!!!!
ok, now that i have your attention (hey, ill do whatever it takes to get noticed on this fast moving thread!:rotfl2: ) anyway, i successfully created my 4th twirl skirt this morning- a patchwork ariel- ill post pics later.

im happy with it- who said done better than perfect?_ it looks good (except on the inside...i dont have a serger so my seams where i joined the layers arent as tidy as some of you pros)

so that leads me to my question.....

i gather using the method of a "wide basting stitch" (2 side by side), pull the strings to gather, and pin it to my other layer. my problem is i feel like when i sew these two layers together, its kinda clumpy and not as smooth as it could be. any tricks and tips? i dont know if it makes a diff or not, but when i cut my material squares for the patchwork, ive been using a pinking shear (i was taught that would help w/ raveling)

any help is greatly appreciated...my friends daughter wants one, and id like that one to look nice on the inside too!:rotfl:

I'm not sure I understand the question, so this may not even be relevent to your question, but I'll try anyway! Are you trimming the seam after you sew it, I would try that, and I usually do a top stitch, about 1/4" above where I sew the layers together, making sure I catch the seam in it (press the seam up on the inside). I thought that made it look a lot better. I've also done some french seams for the main seams, which gives you a nice clean look.

AWW! I love it! They are sooo cute! Love the tie idea on the shirt! I would have done something like that for DS for the 4th. Great job!! Keep it up! :goodvibes

Thanks for the compliment Mickey Fan!! Your kiddos are awful cute too!!I really liked the tie idea too.I saw it online somewhere. I kept thinking of different tie shirts I could make. I think I'm gonna do him one with some mickey head fabric I have for Chef Mickeys.Do you find it hard to think of things to sew for the "little guys"?

:cool1:

Rather, GUESS WHAT I JUST MADE?!?!?!?!?

I SEWED SHORTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:
And it only took me 5 hours!!! :lmao:

This is the first thing I have ever sewn to wear. DD is wearing them now!! They are okay, I will certainly let her out of the house in them!!

Congrats! You are going to be showing off some great customs outfits before we know it!

Gosh...I hope I don't have to wait that long...I saw the tag fairy visited another board and tagged everyone for like 2 pages, I tried to jump on the bandwagon, but wasn't quick enough.
So instead of looking to see if I finally got tagged, I decided to post a picture of my (in my dreams) sweetie!

ok - newbie here what is the tag fairy?!?!

ok - newbie here what is the tag fairy?!?!

The tag fairy is a mysterious being who occassionally "bestows" a tag on a DISboarder.

<<<---- if you look over here, you'll see mine just says "mouseketeer". That's the standard one. You can change it yourself to say whatever you want in the USER CP, but it will always be that color of blue. (See teresajoy's or CastleCreations's. They've changed theirs themselves.)

However, sometimes you'll see people who have a funny saying there in a different color. Those people have been "tagged." See one of BengalBelle's posts (She's the llast post on page 347.) She's got a custom line that she changed in the user CP (it says "Geaux Tigers") *and* she's been tagged twice! It's an honor to be tagged, although I have no idea why? (I'd still like to have one though, even though I don't know *why* it matters.) ;)

The tag fairy seems to have been pretty active recently (lots of "thanks, tag fairy" posts if you look.) But I don't think he/she has been on this thread.

Hairdresserchick -- I love what you did for the 4th. And your kids are *so* cute!

OK, I am probably about 60 pages behind right now and no time to catch up, but here are my thoughts from the posts I have been able to read:

Amy, thanks for the compliments on my DD! I do hand cut and place each part of every applique I make. I do not have an embroidery machine, and have no desire to have one...I like the appliqued look better than the embroidered look. Everything I applique is done by hand, with a satin stitch on my machine. It took a while to be able to figure out how to get the stitching perfect, all I can say is lots of practice! Faces are a lot harder than anything else, the tiny parts do not always stay where you put them, then you have to go back and fill in the details...obviously straight lines will give less of a challenge!

Overalls (I think this was Maureen asking) I do not cover the button holes on any of my overalls. Just let your fabric stop before you get to the holes, it is much easier. Ruffles are going to be a personal preference...I find it easier to sew them on the wrong way (upside down) but I know lots of people who swear it is easier to attach them by making a small hem at the top of the ruffle, gather them, and attach on top....sorry I can't help more!

I really am hoping to have time to catch up more later, you ladies are really coming up with some adorable outfits for your kids! Everything has been fab, I am not going to repost all of the pictures and bore everyone to tears with my comments on each outfit, but keep on sewing girls! :thumbsup2

There really is a learning curve in sewing!

Those shorts I worked on Sunday really took me 5 hours...A lot of it was reading and re-reading the pattern, sewing, seam-ripping and resewing.

Last night after the kids went to bed, I started another pair of shorts for the other DD as well as those triangle head thingys that tie behind their neck..?

I just need to do the elastic around the waist and apply ribbon to the head thingys and I will be done! Total of about 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

I think I will try some capris next with some cheap fabric. Still don't feel ready for my Mickey and Princess stuff yet!!

Incidently, are shorts generally harder than skirts??? I really, really hope I tried and conquered something hard before moving on to the "easier" stuff. I guess I mean pattern reading.

ONE QUESTION....! Those bandana things..I have the triangles sewed but now I need to finish them with ribbon for tieing. I have some single fold bias tape. Should I use that?

Oh! How cute!!! I saw some of those online too. It was a family with quite a few boys all dressed in light blue ties with white shirts, and the baby had one of the ties appliqued onto his onesie! It's a really cute idea, and you did a great job (on both outfits!) Your kids are just too cute!!!!

yeah!! Good for you! It does get easier. I would say that shorts are harder than most skirst. Although, the twirly skirts are time consuming due to all that gathering. (Have I mentioned that I really don't like to gather?)

The bias tape should work for ribbon, but if I'm thinking right, the single fold should probably be folded over again and sewn, so that you don't have any raw seams.

Wow!!! Adorable kids and great outfits!! I have a hard time figuring out what to make for my son. I think skirts are pretty easy to make, but he might look funny in them. :rotfl: Seriously, it's hard to decide what to do. I don't want to embellish anything too much because then it tends to take on a girly look. If you make anything else, make sure you post more pictures!!! I love what you've done so far!

Don't know if anyone is still interested but I found the "smiles around the world" fabric (the one with the smiley kids in different hats) at a place called Quilters Roundup (just add the dot com after it since I can't seem to get links to work on here) for about $6.00 a yard - more pricey than I like but still way cheaper than ebay.

To everyone who has posted lately - great work!! It's nice to see how creative everyone is. :cutie:

Hi Dopeysgirl,

I'm not sure if your questions have been answered, but I use a different method of ruffling without dental floss or a ruffling foot.

With your zig zag pressor foot on your machine, place the piece to be ruffled under the foot, and put the foot down. ( as if you were going to sew)

By hand turn the sewing wheel (that thing on the right side of the machine) just one turn. You should have the bobbin thread poking through the stitch you just made. Pull the bobbin thread out through the fabric. (If doesn't work, try these steps again)

Now you have the bobbin thread and the top sewing thread together pull the two threads.

Pull the threads as long as the piece of fabric to be gathered. If the piece to be gathered is unusually long, you can do this in multi areas. (the easiest place would be to start and stop at the seams)

Set the machine to the largest stitch as well as the widest zig zag stitch that you have.

Use the zig zag stitch on top of the two threads. Sewing all the way to the end of the piece that you want gathered.

Pull the threads slightly while sewing, and your fabric will gather up on its own, you can adjust the amount of gathering when you are finishing your garment.

Seam allowances

Before I had my serger, I used to double stitch my seams. First I would sew the normal seam allowance, and then I would sew another seam 1/4 inch away from the original seam and trim the seams close to the second seam.
This kept the seams from unraveling, and was easier than using the pinking shears.

I hope this helped.
Marianne

Wow, thank you! I wasn't sure if I was going to post it or not because I made so many mistakes. Thanks to everyone who has encouraged me! I'd like to try to piece together a princess face. I know I can't embroider the face, so I may use a dark t-shirt transfer for the facial features. Has anyone ever tried that? Or, I might try to paint the face on. We'll see.

Sawyer is a cutie, isn't he? I really made the shirt just so I'd have an excuse to post his picture. ;o)

You're welcome. Post away. I can't wait to see what you do next.

It is ok your not a Gator. I have always been an Aggie fan andw ill be until the day I die!!! Fil was at A&M for a few years so that was cool but then he got a job in Gator country and they are all about the Gators now :( Shhh don't tell them that I am still an Aggie and always will be

I know those loyalties can run deep, but, hey.... when in Rome and all that, right?

i gather using the method of a "wide basting stitch" (2 side by side), pull the strings to gather, and pin it to my other layer. my problem is i feel like when i sew these two layers together, its kinda clumpy and not as smooth as it could be. any tricks and tips? i dont know if it makes a diff or not, but when i cut my material squares for the patchwork, ive been using a pinking shear (i was taught that would help w/ raveling)

You could try sewing your seams together with a zig zag stitch and then top stitch your seam so it lays flat. Actually, if you have pinked your seams, you could probably just top stitch them down. It gives it a nice nished look on the outside, too.

Marianne, I've never tried this method, but I will now. I have a twirl skirt in the works and will try it on that. Thanks.
