... when I put ruffles on things I sew them on upside down (right sides together) Then you let it flip over as you put it. When I make a night gown or pajamas I then stitch again on the edge of the nightgown or pantlegs to keep it down. It also gives it a little more strength.

Thank you!!!!!!!! I wanted to do it that way, but wasn't sure it would work right, you've confirmed my suspicions!!

LOL at Teresajoy doing the "official" DISboard greeting. I don't think I'd have the nerve! LOL!

Deann -- I don't know anything about overalls, but I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you. :)

My sewing machine is driving me crazy. I posted earlier about my fight with my button hole attachment (thread kept breaking), so I tried to do my buttonholes with a tight zig-zag stitch like someone suggested. The thread kept breaking with that, too, although it worked fine on a regular zig-zag or straight stitch. So I decided to take a break from buttonholes and make some pillowcases (for pillows, not dresses! LOL!) Anyway, it just keeps getting worse and worse until now, when it won't make more than three stitches of any kind without the thread breaking. UGH.

I just had the machine serviced and the tension system rebuilt a month ago. I have tried adjusting the thread tension and I can't see any difference. It doesn't appear to do anything. I guess I need to take it back to the repair shop (there's supposed to be a warranty on the work), but they have horrible hours and I don't know when I'm going to be able to get it there. :(

Is everyone's machine so... um... tempramental? Mine's a 1967 Singer and I asked the guy at the repair shop (last time) if I should just consider getting a new machine. He said no because it's a 'good machine' and has metal parts instead of plastic like the newer machines. However, I swear I spend 3/4 of my time fussing with the machine and 1/4 actually sewing. Does this seem like a bad ratio... or is that just the nature of the beast?

(sorry for the whine so early in the morning.)

I'm sure no on was ignoring me, but I'm just anxious to get these finished for dd!

I know how you feel!! My serger does the same thing, it will work fine for a while then the thread gets all screwy and breaks or something. I just patiently rethread it and hope it lasts until I'm finished for the day!

I APPLIQUED!! :cheer2: :sulley:

It's not great, but I'm going to post a picture anyway. This is the first time I've tried to applique. I was pretty pleased that it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I think it looked better before I tried to go around Nemo. Black thread would have looked better, too. But, it was a learning experience. The model is my incredibly sweet 1 year old son, Sawyer.

I think it looks great. Looks as well done as a lot of the ones on ebay. Nice job. Sawyer's a cutie, too.

any ideas:confused3 I know you all are so talented--put those thinking caps on!

Okay, I added this to my quote for some reason, and now I can't remember what it was in reference to. How bad is that? :rotfl:

I can NEVER remember which one is which! I gave the official greeting several times on our last trip, mostly met with blank stares, shielding of young children, and a hurrying of pace! I was not deterred though, and actually met a few DISers!

This was me on one of my trips, too. I saw one woman decked out in a lime green disney tee and her Disney crocs, and she even had a lime green Baggallini. I did the Meet the Focker thing and she looked almost scared, so I said, "What? You don't DIS?" I mean, honestly, with all that stuff how could she not be a DIS Board member, but she had no idea what I was talking about. I told her about the boards and she said she'd have to look us up after her trip.

Ok, either my posts keep getting lost, no one wants to share their tips for fear that I might outdo them on ebay... hang on... :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2: ... Ok, I'm back... or everyone is underestimating their talent and thinks they can't help me with my overalls. So, here's my questions for the last time:

1 - When covering the bibs on overalls, what is the best way to deal with buttonholes? Make them on the custom, or put the custom below them?

2 - What's the best way to do ruffles on pant legs? Should I sew them upsidedown on the outside of legs and let them flip over and down? OR, should I just sew them on the inside? I'm afraid if I sew them on the inside they will be too long.

Even if you've never made custom overalls, and you have an opinion on how to deal with these issues would you please tell me. DD is anxiously waiting to see her Donald Duck overalls and they've been sitting on my desk since Tuesday just taunting her!!!

I've never done the custom o'alls. However, I would think I would make button holes on the custom. As far as ruffles go, I always do my ruffles right sides together -- so upside down and then flip them down. I always go back and topstitch too -- just to help hold them down.

My machine had been driving me crazy too! :scared:

I bought the ruffle foot but my threads kept breaking and after I'd finally got it done, it was too short for the dress I made. Arggg! So I redid the whole thing using the old baste/pull method.

Then my bobbin thread kept looping but the tension appeared fine. I was reading my sewing book and it showed a pic of the bobbin. I had been using the metal ones and it takes the plastic kind. I switched it out and it worked fine. Weird how something like that can really mess up.

Any tips on how to use the ruffler would be great, otherwise back to ebay it goes.

DENA I got your Dress and I love , love love love it!!
Thank You soooo much.
Its is even better in person, we just love it!

Tink I have a feeling you are going to love her JOJO set, The animal kingdom one I bought from Dena is stunning!!!

Hmmm. I'm sure mine originally used metal, but I've been using plastic. I wonder if that could be screwing things up. (Don't see what effect it would have on the needle thread, but who knows...) Maybe I'll try a metal bobbin (I think I have one or two) and see if it helps. THanks for the idea.

Good Morning Y'all! I haven't been sewing yet, but I will be soon. The 3 kids are going to Gramma's today for the week! I almost can't believe it! What a nice break.

Anyway, regarding the breaking thread. Do the ususal check-ups:
1. check tension. My kids love to flip that dial for some reason and then I try sewing on a tension of 9 and totally ruin whatever I am sewing on.
2. check thread content. I prefer 100% polyester by Madiera. It is more expensive than Coats (like a buck more), but I know it won't jam or split. Wally World doesn't carry it, unfortunately.
3. Make sure you are holding the thread tails taught before you start a seam. This will keep the threads from jerking back and jumbling up under the fabric in a knot.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day! BTW, I am hoping to post some outfits today finally! I am gonna follow Teresajoy's instructions. Been on this thread since the beginning and haven't shown a single outfit. Shame, shame.:sad2:

Wow, thank you! I wasn't sure if I was going to post it or not because I made so many mistakes. Thanks to everyone who has encouraged me! I'd like to try to piece together a princess face. I know I can't embroider the face, so I may use a dark t-shirt transfer for the facial features. Has anyone ever tried that? Or, I might try to paint the face on. We'll see.

Sawyer is a cutie, isn't he? I really made the shirt just so I'd have an excuse to post his picture. ;o)

Thanks -- I've already checked #1 and #3. Maybe I should try some more expensive thread. I've been using Coats -- and "splitting" is an excellent way to describe what's happening.

For the overalls (which, I've never done, just to warn you) I would do the buttonholes on the custom. The ruffles, I would do as everyone else has been saying.

My machine can be very picky if the bobbin thread isn't wound "just so", which has made shirring extremely difficult to learn (since I was told to wind it by hand). I would do the checks that a previous poster said, make sure that your thread is through every little loop, slit, and crevise that is, make sure it is threaded exactly right. I am no expert, but could it be that something is off with your bobbin tension? I've been told that you should never really mess with that, but since you aren't doing much sewing with your machine the way it is, you might want to look into that. If you try everything, I would seriously look into getting a new machine. You should be doing more sewing with your machine than adjusting it. I think you will be a lot happier with a new one.

DENA I got your Dress and I love , love love love it!!

Well, you know what that means don't you? You are going to have to make more outfits for Sawyer!

You know, you could post the picture of him in that outfit I made for Casey. (sorry, only Heather will understand just how funny that is, unless she cares to share.)

Hi ladies :flower3:, Here is my Snow White set. I had alot of fun making this one and it looks great on Destiny. I love the halter style top on her. I added the skirt but I'm not to crazy about it. Let me know what you think.

That is very cute! I do like the pants better than the skirt, but I think it's because the pants have the yellow to make it coordinate better. Could you put a small ruffle of the yellow fabric on the hem of the blue part of the skirt to bring all together? The skirt is cute, don't get me wrong...but I think because the pants match it makes them stand out more. I think if I hadn't seen the pants with it, I'd have like the skirt, though, lol....I'm so fickle.

I would like to make a Tigger outfit for my DS1, but can't find any orange and black striped fabric. I've looked all over in my town and at Hancock's online with no luck. Any ideas? I really just want half a yard for shorts.

If you wait probably until late July/early August all the stores should have their Halloween material in....I'd bet there will be tiger stripes then.

Good morning everyone! Oh please, post pictures today of your latest designs! I can't wait to see everyone's new creations. You girls are amazing!:yay:

I'm sorry it took so long to answer. We've been busy and the storms here knocked out our cable (and my modem) for a bit. I'm in the process of making a twirl skirt out of the orange and royal blue, too, so yes, feel free to pass it along.

Truth is.... I'm not a Gator. I'm an LSU Tiger, but I live in Gator country now; so the orange and blue are plentiful. I'm going to list them, so we'll see how it goes.

It is ok your not a Gator. I have always been an Aggie fan andw ill be until the day I die!!! Fil was at A&M for a few years so that was cool but then he got a job in Gator country and they are all about the Gators now :( Shhh don't tell them that I am still an Aggie and always will be

PLEASE HELP ME W/ SEWING PROBLEM!!!!
ok, now that i have your attention (hey, ill do whatever it takes to get noticed on this fast moving thread!:rotfl2: ) anyway, i successfully created my 4th twirl skirt this morning- a patchwork ariel- ill post pics later.

im happy with it- who said done better than perfect?_ it looks good (except on the inside...i dont have a serger so my seams where i joined the layers arent as tidy as some of you pros)

so that leads me to my question.....

i gather using the method of a "wide basting stitch" (2 side by side), pull the strings to gather, and pin it to my other layer. my problem is i feel like when i sew these two layers together, its kinda clumpy and not as smooth as it could be. any tricks and tips? i dont know if it makes a diff or not, but when i cut my material squares for the patchwork, ive been using a pinking shear (i was taught that would help w/ raveling)

any help is greatly appreciated...my friends daughter wants one, and id like that one to look nice on the inside too!:rotfl:

LOL! Please post pictures when you get a chance :)

I just got home from vacation. I did sneak a peek here and there at the thread while I was gone, but didn't really have a chance to post. Lots of beautiful outfits were posted while I was gone. Hopefully I'll have time later to comment more...

Sawyer is ADORABLE! and the outfit is great! I think if you go around nemo again, use orange to match him (or even black). A darker color probably would have looked better then white, but white looks just fine and cute as can be! GREAT JOB!

OMG! :rotfl:
I plan to do the official greeting as well but thought I better increase my cardio incase I do it to someone and they don't have a clue or appreciate it. I can just see it now...."Come on kids, RUN that wasn't a fellow dis'er!!" :scared:
