I was gone for a day and look at all the awesome things you have created!!! I have 4 almost done outfits so I hope to catch up today to get them finished! Each time I get something almost done my almost 6 year old has another great idea!!! If I keep this up we have more outfits than we need... Wait!!! I guess that means I need to take another trip, right!

Just want to say I love the mickey race car shirt! That is awesome. I have that checkerboard fabric trimming a "cars" dress. It looks so nice with the red and blues.

Wow, everyone is doing some great sewing! Well that Snow white outfit is to die for!
Anywho! I am off to DW in the morning for a 7 day trip at the poly! When I get back there is going to be a huge huge huge amount of posts I am sure! Can not wait and I hope you all have great things to share! I will post all my pics of the girl's custom outfits whe nI get back!

I must be an idiot.

First, I know that a lot of people may need to actually see what I'm talking about rather than just reading about it. But I really hope that someone can help me.

I was trying to make a pair of shorts. The pattern told me to fold the fabric in half with the selvages together. Piece 13 is the back, and they told me to lay in on the fold so that the crotch is pointing away from the fold.

The pattern then told me to lay piece 12, which is the front, along the selvage with the crotch pointing away from the selvage.

So, I have 1 big piece with 2 "J" on either side, and 2 smaller pieces, also forming a "J". With me?!?

The only way I could figure out how to attach them is to actually make the "back" piece one of the side pieces!!! But that piece is actually bigger than the other 2 pieces, because it is for the backside!!! I ended up cutting one of the legs because it was so much bigger than the other.

AGH!!!

I'm ready to cry, this is frustrating, I don't know anyone who knows how to sew to show me. But most of all, I just bought lots and lots of fabric and misc. stuff, which I guess I better just return, because it was actually quite a bit of money - what a waste of time! I am SO disapointed!!

I don't think you were supposed to put the one peice on the fold, just on the side of the fold. You need to be able to make a seam for the outside of the legs. You can make shorts on a fold, but I think it would confuse you too much. There are a couple of different ways you can put them together. It's rare that I read directions. Just if I have a pattern that is sort of involved.

When you say you used the pattern idea further back, do you mean for the inset? Did you use a specific pattern to make the shirt? If so, could I get the number from you, I want to try one of these for my son.

The shirt is Simplicity 4287. I keep trying to talk DH into letting me make one for him, but he is refusing.

Wow! I *really* like this. So far, I've been sewing customs only for my little girl for fear that my twin boys would look too girly in custom clothing. This looks really sharp. I may have to sew something for them now!

I was afraid of the same thing. Boys outfits are hard, but I felt bad making all sorts of things for DD and nothing for DS. He probably won't have nearly as many things that I made because I'm running out of ideas already. At least he'll have a few!

Princess hair clippies that my daughter will never wear. They are matching sets, the other sides are still drying. I am trying to get all of my projects done so I can get rid of all of the piles of stuff in my house.

I almost forgot to post the shirt I finished today for DS. I used the pattern idea from several pages back. It was perfect for this shirt. He loves it - got so excited when the fabric came in the mail - what little boy doesn't love mickey *and* race cars?

It's getting hard to keep our trip a secret - I keep making all these clothes that I let them try on, then not actually wear, LOL!
Now to decide what to make next . . .

Cute! Looks GREAT!!! I love how you did the yolk and collar in the contrasting fabric! I thought about it for a brief moment with DS's shirt, but at $10 a yard, I wanted to use the least amount of Mickey fabric as possible.


Had to laugh at "several pages back" - more like a hundred pages back now!
Just to share...Design_Mom was who suggested this pattern to me when I was looking for ideas - It's Simplicity 4287 - both adult and child sizes come in one pattern.


Someone asked if it was hard - the shirt itself wasn't hard at all, but the collar was a bear for me. The second shirt I did (DH's shirt) was much better/easier. So, I'd say make one on cheapo fabric first to get the hang of it. It was one of those that I had to read and re-read the pattern quite a few times. I also got frustrated on the sleeves a tiny bit - it is tricky to get them laid in smooth (I'm used to gathers when sewing sleeves for myself) but it worked out in the end.

I made another Minnie t-shirt dress for my niece, who is exactly 3 months older than my daughter. I had enough fabric left over for a 2nd one, my sister just bought another shirt for $3. So, there is a total of $10 for both dresses! They'll look so cute wearing them together! This one only took me 3 hours, I'm getting faster (the first one took about 10 hours)!

Oh your Minnie dresses are adorable! Your niece and daughter are going to be too cute together.

Lydia and Tessa wore their dresses together yesterday when we went out. They looked SOOOOO cute!!! (Ok, they ALWAYS look cute, but this was EVEN cuter than normal!) Several people stopped me to tell me how adorable they were, and I saw many admiring glances! I am so proud of what a wonderful creative job Heather did!

She took pictures of them, so I am patiently waiting for her to sign on and post them!

I also made my two girls and Tessa tutus, which I thought turned out pretty cute too! I made Arminda's with the "no sew" method. But, quickly decided that no sew doesn NOT equal easier! So, for Tessa's and Lydia's I just sewed them. SO much easier to make and to keep looking nice! But, those pictures are locked away on Heather's camera, and she must have decided to spend time with her hubby this morning instead of spending time with us! (But, if you saw her husband, you would understand!)

I recently had someone from ebay paint these shortalls for me. I just added the ribbon to the Mickey & Minnie set because I thought it was a little plain compared to the Peter Pan & Princess set. I am very happy with the job the seller did on these. Not sure what is up with my camera. It's been taking horrible pictures lately. It's normally quite good. Kids must have been messing with it.

Don't give up! I have to read and re-read patterns. I have only used one 3x and often have to cut something 2x, spend 20 minutes figuring out what a sewing term means, etc. Lik selvage, I have no idea, now maybe if I was readng it i could figure it out. Shorts are trickier, I just did a pair last week, I skipped the hard part though (pattern) and just disected a pair of my sons to figure out what to do!

Just so you know -- I will correct this since I just found out selvage means uncut edge (don't want to confuse anyone reading this thread later).

I don't remember being taught that in Home Ec but at least she was so she could enlighten me.

One trick I learned at least with shorts because I screwed them up in the past before too, is that I now write "BACK" on the back pieces (wrong side with either washable marker or spefic for sewing marker) that way I don't sew the 2 backs together instead of a front to back. The first time I ended up with basically a crotch down to your knee thing going on & gave up. That was several years ago (even though I had successfully made a pair when I took a class). After this thread I attempted it again & I was able to make a pair of Thomas shorts for my youngest, so thought I let the older boys pick out fabric, ended up making a pair for my 10 year old and had the "Hmmm...clown crotch" thing again. This time I had marked it though and realized I had sewed the wrong pieces together. Got the seam ripper out and re-did them -- wah-lah. They worked. So, now that I know what I did wrong, easier to correct. I even made gauchos for DD! I almost sewed those together wrong too but before I pinned and sewed I put them together to see where the crotch was at & had it wrong, I flipped the sides I was holding up together and they magically worked. I know how frustrating it is though to try to follow the directions. Heck, the one shirt I made for DD to be Cruella, I still have no clue what the directions were saying because when I did what I thought they were saying it didn't seem to work correctly.

I'm learning to just wing it if I have to to get something to look like what I want it. Just don't have anyone look inside my outifts because they certainly aren't pretty seams in there.

I got mine from seller paulelyseandi. She doesn't have any up right now, but I think a few people have emailed her and she's glad to help. She does adorable princess appliques and a few Mickey head ones, too. Hope this helps!

I am by no means an applique expert, but I do know that if your machine does not have both adjustable stitch length and width you will have a horrible time trying to do anything other than a very simple applique. My older machine did not have adjustable stitch width so it could only sew one size of satin stitch and it was simply too wide to do much of anything. I thought I'd mention this in case there is someone who is working with an older or a very basic machine so you would know that it's not your technique, it's your machine.

Their ideas, I am sure postive were taken from someone else as well. you should repost the outfit they must have their panties in a twist cause your outfit looked just as good or better even then theirs.

I use different color pins. I put red pins in the back pieces and yellow pins in the front pieces so I am sure to keep them separate. I also keep a pin in the pattern pieces so I can always go back and check which color meant what if I need to.

From http://www.sewingweb.com/dictionary/#s Selvedge, selvege, selvage: Often marked with information from the manufacturer (color code, identifying data, etc.), this is the edge of the fabric which generally does not fray due to manufacturer's finish. In most cases, this edge should not be included when you cut your fabric, as it may cause puckering of your seam later. o

So it is the UNCUT edge.

The way my home Ec teacher tought us is that selvedge isn't always used (since it is finished so it does not unravel), it's scrap (think selvedge metal) material. Although, I do usually use the selvedge too!
