Keep in mind they will not work in the parks. If you purchase one they clearly state it's just a souvenir.

That might already answer my question, but does it work the other way around? If we have Magic Bands from the park can you use them on the ship?

Nope. You need to have the cruise-specific one they will give you at the kid's club.

What about for 12 year olds who won't want them locked on but will be using both Edge and Oceaneers labs.
